Guess who's gonna be vending at the Toronto Reptile Expo for the first time?

I've been attending for years, but this will be the first time I will be attending as an exhibitor. I will be bringing a handful of hognose with me, and perhaps a few crested geckos and isopods as well. I'm very excited!

And the last one is out! This was the single egg from Brights, who was badly eggbound and needed to go to the vet to have the rest aspirated.

It's a big baby! And I'm so thankful it made it. Not to mention, it also proved out the dad's het, and is wonderfully bright.

Oh, this was a bit of a surprise...

I wasn't expecting axanthics and axanthic condas in this clutch, because I'd long given up on Hati being het for anything (she was sold to me as 100% het snow) after 3 years of breeding her with other hets and getting nothing. I had paired her with Gavriil (arctic) for the entire period this year, except for a single day towards the very end where I threw in Malchom (axanthic conda). Guess who knocked her up?

It just goes to show that sometimes, even if you know the 'odds', they're just that - odds. Things are still entirely up to nature, and sometimes you miss things year after year. I'm glad that Hati has proven out to be het axanthic, though. It means all of these babies are het snow!

This chunky diablo line female has a bright future here... now if only I can catch her colours right. She's a very dark, rusty red, like oxblood. Also unlike many of the babies that pass through here, she's very... shall I say, stout in build.😂She definitely isn't fat, but short in length and stocky. I'll have to see how this grows out, but I love that trait.

8 good eggs, 14 duds. Better than nothing!

The probable sire of this clutch is a first-timer, so I'm not terribly surprised. I was at least hoping for a 50/50 in good:dud eggs, but nature will give you what it wants and nothing more. Here's hoping all 8 make it!

I find that one of the bigger challenges behind taking axanthic photos is in capturing their silvery colours. These were taken under natural shaded light; they certainly look better than the photos I took when he was a baby.

I'm otherwise very happy with the rate that he's growing, and he's a very good eater to boot! Hopefully he'll be ready for a female next season.

A new setup for an African Fat-tailed gecko. It's a pleasure to look at, and hopefully a pleasure to live in.

I am gradually moving the majority of my collection over to bioactive, if not naturalistic at a minimum enclosures. It's a costly and time-consuming endeavor even for a collection as relatively small as my own, but the rewards of seeing enriched animals displaying natural behaviours are worth it. As a hobby, I believe that we can always do better and learn more. It's important to keep our minds open to what we may be missing, in the interest of these fascinating creatures that we have taken responsibility for. They deserve it.

Please excuse the size of the enclosure, he was only in it for half a day as I sorted out my animals and this was the most recent photo of him. 😅

It looks like I'll be letting this boy go, so if anyone is interested in him, send a DM! Absolutely nothing wrong with him, eats like a champ, proven breeder, he just no longer fits into my plans and I'd like to see him go to a loving home, or somewhere where he'll have lots of girlfriends.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

This was a large and highly anticipated clutch, but the male either wasn't successful or the female didn't take a liking to him. I'm inclined to believe it's the former, as the male's never been successful in 3 years across 2 females. When working with a very small number of pairings yearly, an entirely slug clutch like this can be a huge blow to plans.

With any hope, I can maybe bounce back by pairing her again with a male she's been successful with in the past. I got her back up to weight, put the male in and within 3 hours there was a visible lock. Fingers crossed!

And yet, 3 meals in, she still looks offended that I'd cool her down in the first place.
