Happy ADOPTION Day SULLY now known as NENAGH!
Meet Nenagh, my new rescue dog from Puebla, Mexico. She came into my life on Nov. 19, the day she flew across the continent and arrived at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.
This 1.5-year-old, 18-lb poodle mix is a wonderful little companion. She’s, in turn, cuddly and calm, and playful and sociable.
When I decided to get a new dog, there was absolutely no question that it would have to be a rescue. Knowing even a little about the plight of street dogs around the world helps one understand why.
Mexico, for example, is home to up to 18 million strays, the largest population in all of Latin America. These dogs typically live in very desperate conditions. Nenagh is a case in point.
She had been abandoned in a house with no food or water. There, she had given birth to a litter of pups there, but was unable to nurse them. Starving and dehydrated, Nenagh was unable to produce enough milk. By the time they were discovered, only two pups remained alive — but just barely.
Rescuer Bety tried desperately to save the pair, bottle feeding them every three hours. But tragically, they didn’t make it.
Nenagh, also close to death, had been sent to an emergency vet clinic. She came through after being placed on IV fluids for several days and fed a high protein diet.
My heart broke for Nenagh when I heard her story. I knew right away that I wanted to be part of the effort to give her a new life.
Tragically, there are countless stories just like her’s. Please, if you are thinking about getting a new dog, consider a rescue.
Adopt don’t shop.
