One of our clients has a saddle to sell! It is a schleese Merci 18” seat. Bought feb (2021) from schleese rep and used it until end of September. Cleaned and oiled often. It’s a comfy saddle. Only selling as it is a bit too long for the horse she bought. It would come with the girth (schleese brand as well) but not the stirrups/leathers. Asking $4500 open to reasonable offers. If interested connect with me and I will share her contact info.

We should all by striving for this

Anxious or Calm? It starts off their backs.

I have watched thousands of humans deal with horses over the last 70 years. So much of how horses behave has to to with whether or not they are anxious or calm, and so much about whether the horse is anxious or calm depends upon how it is handled---I think---

Watch the way a good horse person catches a horse in a field, how they put the halter on, how they lead the horse, how they handle the horse on cross-ties, how they groom, how they tack up, how they mount, and then, after they are on the horse, how they warm up.

I don’t think with the better horse people you will see much drama. You won’t see yanking and snatching and slapping. You won’t hear lots of yelling. You will see quiet movement, almost deliberate handling, consistency, and when the horse gets tricky, like sticks its head way up to get bridled, there won’t be a big deal, lots of patience.

You won’t see the saddle getting slammed on the horse’s back, or the girth getting cranked tight, maybe the horse being kneed in the belly to “make him let out his breath.”
There just won’t be all that hassle and drama.

And once the rider IS on, you will see calm walking, no insta-contact, no feeling of rush or hurry, or frenzy.

All of this is not about riding skills or training while riding, but it is a prelude to that, and usually how you see a human deal with horses OFF their backs will give you a pretty good clue about what you will see when you watch them ride.

This Sunday March 13th Tanglewood is pleased to welcome back Krista from KP Dressage for a day of improving our flat work after a long cold winter!! Every time Krista Pollack comes to work her magic she gets great reviews and we are all left with great improvements and great things to work on going forward. If you have not made your intentions to participate known yet, please do so, I would like to finalize the ride schedule by Tuesday. Riders will participate in 45 mins private sessions, auditors are welcome. Light lunch provided. Don’t miss this chance to ride with this great lady and get the season started off right!

Tanglewood is excited to have Nardine from The Strong Rider out this Sunday from 2:30-4pm to help us get our season rolling with some fitness related ideas and activities! Fitness is a very important consideration for safety in our sport and helping our horses do their work! Can’t wait to hear all the feedback from participants about how we can be better partners to our equines. Where comfy clothing and bring lots of water!

Rider posture

“Posture” is defined as posture
[ˈpäsCHər]
NOUN
1. the position in which someone holds their body when standing or sitting.

Posture matters in riding probably more than we realize, and most of us suffer from indifferent upper body carriage, especially when we are just out trail riding, and not being watched, as at a show of some sort.

The horse has to carry the rider, probably hard enough to handle when the rider sits in balanced alignment, but when we lean, tilt, lurch forwards, backwards, side to side, slouch, kick our feet out in front, all the common aberrations, the horse really struggles to deal with a shifting and unbalanced load.

A tiny little person can get away with this more easily, simply because that rider has less mass, but the taller or heavier rider who has improper posture will have more negative impact.

I am tall, and have found sitting up and open to be a life-long challenge, especially on long rides. For me, at least, one of the worst habits is to look down, because it’s like dominos, first the eyes go down, then the head tilts, then the shoulders round, then the upper body leans, and, BINGO, terrible posture.

So, if you want to make things easier for your horse, try not to look like Lurch----Stay more tall and open, maybe not to the elegant pinnacle of someone like Mr Watjen here, but this is an example of what to strive toward.

Ingrid Klimke – more on stretching to consider:
“I think it really shows he stretches from the wither, really down, and makes his neck really long, and the nose forward, that is important. Some horses crawl behind the vertical, holding their nose very tight to their chest, then you feel that the back is still tight – the stretching must be from the hindleg over a swinging loose back, and then stretch really down. You see how long his neck is and he is still saying, softy, yes, I know the way is free. My father always said, think of stretching the nose to the sand.
