Potentially harmful plants to cats

The holidays bring festive decor, including beautiful plants, but many of these can pose serious risks to our feline friends. Here’s a guide to the dangers of popular holiday plants and how to keep your cat safe.

⚠️ Highly Toxic Plants to Avoid

Holly: Both the leaves and berries can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy.

Mistletoe: Can lead to severe gastrointestinal upset, difficulty breathing, and even seizures in severe cases.

Yew: Extremely poisonous, yew can cause sudden death due to its toxic alkaloids.

Amaryllis: All parts are toxic, especially the bulb, causing vomiting, drooling, and tremors.

Christmas Rose (Helleborus niger): Contains toxins that can cause abdominal pain, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and depression.

Lilies: Even small amounts of lily ingestion can cause kidney failure in cats, making them among the most dangerous plants for cats year-round.

⚠️ Plants with Mild Toxicity

Poinsettias: While not as toxic as once believed, the sap can irritate your cat’s mouth and stomach, leading to drooling and mild vomiting.

Christmas Cactus: Generally non-toxic, but ingestion may cause mild stomach upset in some cats.

🎄 Safety Tips

1. Keep plants out of reach: Cats are curious climbers, so ensure toxic plants are placed where they can’t access them.

2. Opt for faux plants: Artificial decorations can provide the same festive cheer without the risk.

3. Know the signs of poisoning: Look for drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or seizures. If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency pet poison helpline immediately.

I'm really loving these functional food toppers from Northwest Naturals that we got in.

I bought the chicken and green lipped mussel as Dexter our oldest dog and Cedric our oldest cat are having some health issues that is causing stomach upset and reluctance to eat.

It works great for both of them and the green lipped mussel will help with their joints.

We have a beef flavour as well. These big bottles are $19.99 but will last a long time.

We also have smaller bottles in a different brand with more flavours to experiment with

Give these a try if you have a dog who is picky or having stomach issues and needs a bit of enticement to eat.
