Trochu & District Ag Society
On September 16th, 1974, The Trochu & District Agricultural Society was certified with The Agricultural Society’s Act. At this time there were 114 names presented on the certification to form this Agricultural Society. This bringing our 50th anniversary.
A little history of the society actually dates to 1910 - 1938.
On February 19, 1910, the people of the Trochu District held a meeting at the Trochu School house for the purpose of organizing an Agricultural Society. By acclamation members were voted in are as follows.
President: William H. Garrick , Honorarium President: A. Trochu, Secretary/Treasurer: L.C. Eckenfelder. The following month, 8 members were elected in creating the board.
May 21st on 1910 Communication was presented from the Department of Agriculture requesting that the Trochu Agriculture Society should hold their fair somewhere around the date already selected by Three Hills. Thus, the first Trochu Fair was dated September 21st, 1910. Judging would be based on livestock such as Horses, Cattle, and Poultry. Grain, Vegetables and Fine Art. Entrance fees were $0.25. Their first fair was unsuccessful by a financial standpoint. It did, however, show the growth of the village and an immense improvement in the surrounding country. Later the Fair was moved to October.
1911 Fall fair had races added. Driving race with Horse and Buggy, 1st place prize was $20, 2nd $10, which was a large prize in those days. Farmers Race (no description included) 1st place prize was $10, 2nd $5, 3rd $3 entrance fees $1.00. Boys and Girls pony races, 1st place Prize was $7, 2nd $5, 3rd $2 at $0.50 entrance fee. All races where ran on a ¾ mile track.
Horse shows presented on Stallions such as Percheron Stallions. As you will see in the Pictures included in this post.
January 6th, 1923, Garrick was interviewed about giving the association a clear title to the grounds as measured by board members. 22.35 acres total in a 870x950x118 sq ft. This to the best of our knowledge would be the fairgrounds as we know them now as the Trochu municipal Campground. Diagram included.
The Trochu Agricultural Society was established in Trochu, Alberta in 1910, largely to operate the local fair. The society disbanded about 1931 and was dissolved in 1938.
The reason behind Trochu Agricultural Society disbanding is unknown, but highly likely due to the Great Depression.
