The Nova Scotia SPCA accepts animals into its care regardless of their age or health. We also follow no-kill principles which means we do not euthanize animals for space. Unexpected life situations happen and the SPCA strives to be approachable, non-judgemental and understanding. On average, healthy and friendly animals are adopted into loving families in less than two weeks! You simply have to ca

ll and arrange an appointment so the shelter can learn about what is the most suitable type of home for your pet. The appointment also allows the shelter to prepare a cozy space for your pet to make the transition as smooth as possible. We understand how difficult it is to surrender a pet and thank all owners who are able to make the best decision for their pet. The weather forecast calls for hot, humid weather this week. Please keep your best bud safe.

Your vehicle – even with the windows down – can quickly reach a temperature that puts your pet at risk of serious illness or death.

When the weather is warm, it’s best to leave your four-legged friend at home. If you can’t, use the drive-through, curbside pickup, or visit pet-friendly businesses to avoid a potentially tragic outcome.

If you encounter an animal in a vehicle that appears to be in distress (exaggerated panting; anxious or staring expression; muscle tremors; lack of coordination; red or blue tongue and lips; convulsions; vomiting; or collapse), call 911 and stay with the animal until officers arrive.

If you’re unsure if an animal is in distress, call the Nova Scotia SPCA - Enforcement at 1-888-703-7722 and speak with the call-taker.

Have you ever met someone that came into your life and changed it for the better? For Dan and Lindsey, that someone was a dog named Ollie. 🐶 When Ollie passed, a hole was left in their hearts. 💔 To honour Ollie’s memory, they wrote a beautiful obituary and encouraged animal lovers to donate so that other dogs like him could be given a chance at a meaningful life. 🐾

"Old School" André Myette stopped by the Nova Scotia SPCA - Colchester Shelter to drop off the a cheque from Community Credit Union matching the $235 we raised from our 50/50 Draw on May 18th. This makes the total NBW has procured for our favorite charity at $2890.75!

It happened in the blink of an eye. One minute, the 7-year-old stray kitty was walking down the street. The next minute, he was airborne, having been grabbed by a large bird of prey. 🦅 His future looked bleak. Thankfully, the angels were watching and he got a second chance at life. Now, he spends his days safely indoors watching Cat TV, play-hunting with his dad, and snoring. 😻

When pets get adopted, we don’t say goodbye. We wish them good luck! 🥰 That’s because our biggest goal is to watch pets prance out with new families. Every dog struts out of the shelter differently. 🐾 For Kai, one of the pups and dogs rescued from the wildfires in the Northwest Territories, her farewell included a nod to our staff and volunteers. 🐶 It felt as if she was saying thank you to our amazing animal loving community. It will continue to take time for the pups and dogs to decompress. But we hope to say “good luck” to all the NWT dogs soon. 💙 Cheers to new beginnings! 🎉

Champ loves meeting new people and would be happy to go home with you. As you can see, he loves his toys and although he's not the best at sharing, he'd be happy to play with his toys himself all day long. Champ is a big boy at roughly 90 lbs! He doesn't always know his size and sometimes jumps, but he has been learning very well that he doesn't always need to hold onto your shoulders to give you a kiss! Champ would have to be the only pet in his home as he hasn't been a fan of the dogs and cats at the shelter. He requires a home with older children due to still learning some manners and not being too keen with hands on his toys and food. Interested in adopting? Faced with adversity, Tiny Tim’s optimistic outlook inspired everyone here at the SPCA. 🐾 Found as a stray kitten, Tiny Tim was only a few weeks old. Proudly following open-admission and no-kill principles, the Nova Scotia SPCA is a registered charity that helps companion animals in need. Every year, more than 16,000 pets are helped through animal rescue, progressive programs, and rehoming opportunities.

Some pets were abandoned, injured, homeless or abused… but they all deserve a second chance.

We work one-on-one with them to rebuild their trust, fully vet them so they are safe and healthy, and give around-the-clock care until they find their forever family.

We do not receive any government funding for our shelters throughout the province. 100% of the money raised in each community stays in that community to help local pets in need. Donate today to make a difference here.
