Goose Landing Vineyard

Goose Landing Vineyard A boutique vineyard The Goose Landing Vineyard is a boutique vineyard that was established in 2011 in North River, Nova Scotia by Al Bégin and Jill Linquist.

The vineyard consists of 672 Frontenac Blanc vines planted on 3/4 acres. The first crop should be in 2013, and will hopefully produce a wonderful dessert wine. The name of the vineyard was chosen due to the fact that every Fall (grape harvest time) there are literally thousands of geese gathering in the surrounding fields to prepare for their yearly migration south. The sounds of the geese can be

heard day and night. Further information on the vineyard, and on growing grapes, can be obtained by looking through the comments in the photo albums. Thanks for visiting us!

Haven't posted anything on this page for quite some time. We took out half the vineyard 2 years ago but kept the other half for fun. Frost warning last night and woke up to temp of 0.1C. Looking at the vineyard this afternoon and initial estimate of 20-40% loss. Will know more in the next couple of days. Oh, and another frost warning for tonight...

The time has come to face reality. We have had this vineyard for 10 years, creating it out of an old commercial lot, and transforming it into a vineyard that produced up to 6,000 pounds of grapes to be used in Nova Scotia’s iconic wine, Nova7. The time required for a little hobby vineyard is substantial so we are deciding to focus our energies on other projects.

This year’s harvest looked very promising, but the weather, and the frosts, and now the starlings, are making what we thought would be a very difficult decision somewhat easier. There will be no harvest this year, nor in future years.

A sincere thank-you to everyone who somehow participated in this fun community project. Over the years we had MANY people volunteer their time to help with our crazy little project. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

So it is with a little sadness, but mostly with immense joy and pride, that we announce our retirement from the world of grape growing.

Cheers! And thanks again,

Al & Jill
Retired farmers, but still wine drinkers

On a positive note, this could be a great way to leaf-thin before harvest!

Looking like a good crop again this year. We are in initial discussions with Benjamin Bridge to figure out a harvest date, but our initial thinking is the weekend of October 10th. This could be another staycation for you - pretend you’re harvesting in Italy while hanging in North River! Be a part of next year’s Nova7! Stay tuned...

Another growing season is upon us (which explains the risk of frost for this coming Monday!). Looking forward to what this season will challenge us with. We are trying a couple of different things - a grow tube to push along a couple of transplants from last year that didn’t do much, and using an existing vine to hopefully bypass the transplant phase and quickly have a thriving vine. We’ll see.

This could get really ugly. Hurricane Dorian still supposed to be at hurricane strength as it passes through Nova Scotia overnight Saturday. If so, it could do major damage to the vines. Frost last year, hurricane this year?

We have been in drought conditions for several weeks. The bees are spending more time in the birdbath than the birds are. Easy to forget that bees are also dependent on a steady supply of water.
