News Release from Canadian Heritage:

This February 15 marks the 60th anniversary of our flag. Since it was first raised in 1965, this national emblem represents the values we all cherish – generosity, openness, respect and equality. A flag that could not be mistaken for any other, it connects us to our national identity, to our Canadian pride and to each other. Seeing our bright red and white flag with its maple leaf flying reminds us of the home we all share.

This year, more than ever, not only do we have to celebrate our flag but also remind ourselves what it represents: our values, our resilience and our sovereignty.

In the last week, public displays of national pride have become more prominent following external economic pressures. The growing sense of unity and national identity is an occasion to engage Canadians to mark the flag’s anniversary.

Raise your flag wherever you are to mark this special day.

We have a new team member...introducing Puzzle Cat!

Puzzle Cat is our Spay-It-Forward clinic cat. Clients buy a puzzle piece for $5, and when the puzzle is complete the money is donated to the Hollibell Foundation and it pays for one cat spay surgery.

The Hollibell Foundation is a registered charity who supports spay and neuter programs in our community. For more information about this important cause, check out hollibellfoundation.com.

We focus on safety.

Our drive-through process for drop-off and pick-up ensures both cats and dogs are controlled at all times, and allows for more privacy if you have questions or concerns.

Dogs must be leashed and cats must be in a solid carrier (no shoe-boxes please).

You can book a spay or neuter surgery for your pet anytime up to a year in advance.

Remembering Animals in War

Commemorative pins from the Ontario SPCA honour the wartime contributions of animals. They are intended to be worn as a complement to the poppy in remembrance of our veterans and the animals who bravely served by their side.

Mules carried artillery, horses transported troops and hauled field guns, pigeons delivered crucial messages, cats served as companions and kept ships free of vermin, and dogs have served as messengers, medical assistants, bomb detectors and search and rescue workers.

Sales from these pins help provide care for animals in need.

No one wakes up alone!

Recovery time is critical after surgery. Our patients are monitored at all times, are kept in cozy blankets and no-one lies on the floor!

Graphic warning! Not for the the faint of heart!

Here's a photo of pyometra (a uterus filled with bacteria and pus). You can see how distended the uterus on the left is, compared to the normal uterus on the right.

The only treatment for this is a spay surgery. Left untreated, this could explode and become life-threatening for a female dog.

Signs of pyometra include low energy, discharge, drinking and urinating more, vomiting and not eating.

Spaying your dog at a young and healthy age can prevent pyometra.
