At Glendale, when we send your pets home after surgery with seemingly impossible discharge instructions to follow, it’s not that we don’t understand how difficult the next 7-10 days can be. We all have pets and have gone through the same experiences you have. When pets lick their incisions or are not restricted in activity inside and outside, problems arise. There are definitely options to help you and your pet manage their recovery successfully. Shown here is VT Sue’s pup Pixie who underwent an ovariohysterectomy yesterday. With the help of a leash, a crate, pain and “quiet-facilitating” medications, she is more easily managed at home.

Meet Hermie (yes, named Hermie from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer!) Hermie came in today for his Leptospirosis vaccine. Leptospirosis is an infectious bacterial disease that can affect dogs and sometimes humans. It is found in standing water, soil, food and is spread through the contaminated urine of wildlife, particularly rodents. Leptospirosis causes a range of symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea to more severe complications involving the liver and kidneys. Hermie is now protected and safe!

Following up on Gustavo from last week, his radiograph showed he has a suspected diagnosis of Intervertebral Disc Disease, a painful condition characterized by back pain, compressed nerves and discs. Gus was sent home on medications to reduce inflammation, treat nerve pain and he is doing really well. He will be seeing a neurologist for a possible CT scan or MRI.

Gus came to see us because his owners felt he was off. His clinical symptoms were very subtle and not very telling. His owners were fantastic at picking up on these subtleties and bringing him in. On exam, it was noted he had some pain and he was twitching his head. We admitted Gus for bloodwork and X-rays. His bloodwork was normal, but his X-rays were not. Can you see where the problem is? Stay tuned for the answers.
