Herding training is on its way! Surprisingly Launch has been the top sheepdog around here. I don't know what I'd do without her. She really is an invaluable asset especially with no perimeter fence.

I’ve been feeding my dogs once a day and fasting them once a week or so for years and always thought there was some benefit. As it relates to a natural diet. Interesting to see it scientifically backed with a study.

Dogs fed once a day are less likely to be diagnosed with age-related conditions than pooches fed more often, study claims.

In the largest largest study to date of feeding frequency conducted in companion dogs, University of Arizona-led experts analyzed data on 24,238 pet dogs from the US and found:

• Being fed once a day lowered the risk of nine types of canine health problems
• These included cancer, dental issues and either kidney or urinary complications
• Similarly, dogs fed only once daily scored lower on tests of cognitive problems
• But the team said it is too early to advise owners to change their pet's diets

“We view these results as an exciting first step of an ongoing exploration of the impact of diet on companion dogs living in human environments. Given the intense interest in, and popularization of, ‘longevity diets’ such as intermittent fasting and time-restricted feeding, these types of studies in dogs are both timely and important. We believe these studies will ultimately offer insights into factors that promote health and longevity for both dogs and humans.” - The Dog Aging Project

The scientists and researchers we interviewed for The Forever Dog book agreed that one meal a day for healthy dogs is ideal, in terms of maximizing autophagy and minimizing metabolic stress.

Volunteer Community Search & Rescue club.

I hope everyone is ready to start training again. Now that the snow is clear and the grass will be back we need to plan a day to train together again.
Saturday May 7th will be out next volunteer SAR training day at 11am at Henry Heeney Park in Danford Lake.
Bring the usual training items, good clothing for the weather, and a dog full of energy.
And we still need to make a name for our club eh!

These large balls with a handle come in handy with a possessive dog and make training the retrieve easier. I also prefer using blue coloured toys as this is the best colour for our dogs to see.

We had our first official search and rescue training day. I would like to thank all of the handlers and dogs for taking their time and bearing the cold. This is Pontiac, Low, and Ville de Gatineau’s SAR Dog rescue team. Training has officially begun and I believe we have some good working candidates here. We just need some more training time some more fresh snow and in the near future a lost pet to be able to prove our newfound skills. Some of the dogs were immediately tracking. Really had a great day.
Thank you everyone and look forward to training together again in the coming weeks.

Pontiac Forest Dog Training is offering a volunteer work shop for dog owners in the area who are interested in training their dogs to search and rescue lost pets.
We have 3 people who are interested so far.. We need an even number over 5 to make the workshop happen.
I’d like to get this organized in the next few weeks while we have snow to assist in tracking.
Please message Pontiac Forest Dog Training if you think you and your dog may have what it takes.
Volunteers must be able to assist in search and rescue recoveries for lost pets, dogs and possibly cats.
Candidates will have basic obedience under control, a dog that is friendly and more interested in dogs then people. The dog doesn’t necessarily need to be a scent hound, most working breeds will do well. Send a message to Pontiac Forest Dog Training please.

Miss Venus is back. She is soooo smart and her training is top notch. 4.5 months old. Will be seeking her forever home! She is super happy, active, confident and intelligent. She is not a couch potato dog and will require an active handler. Blue x Cadie

Started blood tracking with Evey this year. At 4 months old in the dark she tracked the blood trail 60m in the snow and lead us to the deer.
We are offering blood tracking services for hunters in the area.

Always have your dog secured in your vehicle. Either in a crate or with a harness and seatbelt.

responded to a single vehicle collision on near Brockville yesterday afternoon. As Officers approached the vehicle they were greeted by a furry friend. Alfie the 17 week old pup was sitting in the back seat, a little shook up but ready to play another day thanks to his parents taking care of him and having him harnessed in properly. The driver was properly secured as well and suffered no injuries. ^tc
