Like many of you, we are in shock after Fort Saskatchewan’s Mayor Gale Katchur detailed awful ways to kill feral cats during a council meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Mayor Katchur suggested that residents “deal with” the cats themselves, rather than relying on the municipality.

“JUST PUT THEM ON EXHAUST PIPES”

“When it comes to feral cats, it would be cruel to say, but it would be interesting if people could deal with them themselves, I’m going to say like in the old days when you lived on the farm. Now be careful, because when you lived on the farm, if there was cats, you threw them in a bag and threw them in a river, or they just put them on the exhaust pipes” Mayor Katchur said, chuckling.

COUNCILLOR BRIAN KELLY IN FAVOUR OF KILLING FERAL CATS: “I VOLUNTEER, OKAY?”

One of four feral cat management strategies presented by Fort Saskatchewan city staff would involve a 72-hour hold, then euthanasia. A peace officer noted the psychological harm to staff who would be forced to routinely kill healthy animals.

”If, in fact, it’s a psychological damage to a staff member, get another staff member,” Councillor Brian Kelly scoffed. “And if you have trouble getting a staff member, I will give you my phone number. I volunteer, okay?”

ALBERTA STANDS AGAINST ANIMAL CRUELTY AND KILLING

The actions described by Mayor Katchur are animal cruelty and chargeable offenses under the Animal Protection Act and/or Criminal Code of Canada. As an animal rescue organization that advocates for the humane care of feral cats, we are appalled to see Alberta’s elected officials making such callous, cruel comments.

We strongly advise that the City of Fort Saskatchewan implement a trap-neuter-return (TNR) program, which was one of the options presented to council. We also call for Mayor Katchur and Councillor Kelly to resign from their roles immediately, as they do not share the values of Alberta’s compassionate citizens, and they did not govern themselves professionally as elected officials.

COMMENT “LETTER” BELOW and we will send you a form letter you can use to contact Mayor Katchur, Councillor Kelly, and/or the City of Fort Saskatchewan.

We can’t accept cruelty, and we won’t.

Quick Facts:

If cats are removed from their outdoor home, it creates a territorial opening, or vacuum, that will not remain empty.

Removing cats from an area may cause a temporary decrease in the cat population, but more cats WILL take their place–and it won’t take long.

This phenomenon is known in conservation studies as the Vacuum Effect. The Vacuum Effect has been observed in many species, not just cats.

Catching and removing (or killing) cats is therefore futile. It is an expensive, deadly cycle which yields no long-term benefits.

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is the only way to stabilize cat populations. It is the humane, effective approach to community cats and is sound public policy.

National Pet Fire Safety Day on July 15 reminds us to consider our pets when planning fire routes and safety in our homes.

It is always good to have an emergency plan in place for all kinds of emergency situations.

Keep kennels in an available easily accessible place and take note of where your pet goes in stressful situations. This will help you find them as quickly as possible in an emergency.

PSA With Canada Day upon us the skies will be lighting up with both formal and informal celebrations. Loud bangs and bright lights are not fun for everyone however and we often get posts about terrified animals that have escaped and are on the run when there are fireworks.

Please please practice Firework Safety so that your beloved pets are home inside with you and safe this summer.

Something to remember when bringing any plants into the house. Here’s an image depicting some poisonous plants for cats. Keep in mind there are so many more. Always research plants before bringing them home.
