Putting the first two garden plots to bed for the winter.

Strawberries, blueberries, red currants, black currants, garlic, herbs, and, of course, swiss chard. πŸ₯³πŸ₯³

A quick look at two of my garden plots, and how I get them ready for winter.

Get a head start on next year by planting raspberry canes now.

These are Heritage Raspberries, which are fall bearing plants, producing loads of raspberries from mid September to mid October.

Each cane you plant this fall will grow 4-6 new canes in the spring, so make sure you have room for them.

Raspberries also spread, so take that into consideration when you are planting them.

Plants are $4 each or 6/$20.

Message me to order. Limited number available.

Obviously, limited time, until it gets too cold.

These are June bearing strawberries, and the plants will multiply, so make sure you allow room for that.

Plants are $2 each, or 6/$10.

Message me to order. Limited supply.

Sweet potato economics 101.

This spring, one sweet potato easily created over 100 sweet potato slips.

I planted two of those slips in a very crowded spot in my garden.

They got no compost or anything, other then watering as needed.

Today I dug up 2 kg (almost 4 1/2 lbs) of absolutely lovely sweet potatoes! πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³

Some are big, some are small, some are crazy shaped, but all are beautiful, healthy, and I can't wait to roast some tomorrow for brunch.

I've never dug up sweet potatoes, so a few got broken, but otherwise, they are perfect.

Pretty darn groovy.

Have you ever grown sweet potatoes? What was it like?

Starting up my tiny indoor greenhouse for the season, and this year I'm trying some new plants.

First of the new plants is ginger.

I successfully got ginger to grow outside this summer, and in mid September, I washed and transplanted the shoots into new soil, and brought them inside.

They've been growing decently in my window, but now that spot is cold, and gets no direct sun, so I've moved them into the greenhouse. I'm hopeful they will enjoy the cozy warmth and better light of the greenhouse.

I just snipped the shoots back, and made some tea with the leaves. Very nice.

On the same shelf are three peppers who just came inside, and some newly rooted sweet potato slips.

We shall see. 😁🌱

Can I get three cheers for the Heritage Raspberry! Woohoo!

I find that the island doesn't really get much of a spring, and as a consequence, our summer raspberries aren't always fabulous.

In contrast, the fall raspberries, like Heritage, benefit from all that summer warmth, and from what I've seen, seem to produce better berries.

The trick is making sure the plants get lots of water late summer, to help the berries develop.

Raspberry love. It's a thing. 😎❣️

Greetings Groovy Gardeners!

Who wants to grow a pepper plant or two inside this winter?

I'm gonna have 40+ pepper plants that will go dormant in the next month as the temperatures cool, and I'm wondering if anyone local would like any plants.

I'll have roughly:
- 12 jalapeno
- 5 sweet banana
- 5 hungarian wax
- 5 sweet bell
- 5 lipstick (sweet)
- 5 klari baby (sweet)
- 2 habanero

After the plants go dormant, I'll prune them completely back, removing all leaves, wash the plant and roots, and replant into fresh potting soil. The plants are asleep during that process, and when they wake up, they are inside, warm, comfy, and ready to grow quickly.

To grow peppers inside, you need a warm spot that either gets full sun, or you can use a basic grow lamp, or a combination of the two.

Below is a short video about me growing peppers inside last winter.

If I can do it, anyone can. 😁

If you're interested, message me, and I'll let you know when the plants will be ready for pick up.
