My DIY "grab & go" free veggie station, inspired by a story my sister told me this morning.
Most of us are now familiar with the community fridge concept, where folks give what they can, and take what they need.
Well, in Calgary, the apartment building complex my sister lives in has just put a community pantry/freezer in the shared foyer of the complex.
Now, neighbours can connect more easily with other neighbours, building community and resilience.

Another veggie freezer pack that I think will work nicely this winter.
I call this one my Whole Tomato Italian Mix, and it has whole small tomatoes, chopped sweet bell and banana peppers, fresh chopped basil, and fresh oregano leaves. 500 gram bags.
I used a mix of my Tiny Tim, Tropical Sunset, Sweet 100, Blush, and Principe Borghese tomatoes in these packs.
I can see adding this to loads of things this winter. 🥳
Growing watermelon has been a challenge for me.
Previously, I bought seedlings and watched them struggle to grow.
This year, I started my own seeds, and thanks in no small part to our wonderful weather, I've managed to actually get a few watermelon.
This is my second watermelon, and it was pretty good, considering the plants were stuck on the edge of an aisle, with very little space, water, or nutrients.
Encouraged by this success, I'll be saving more seeds, and making a real effort to grow more watermelons.
Growing food is complex, time consuming, body breaking, and exhausting, but it's also definitely worth the effort.
I've never enjoyed any challenge more.

Fresh oregano, waiting to be prepped.
These lovely, tasty leaves will be combined with fresh basil, whole cherry tomatoes, and sweet peppers to make a bunch of fabulous veggie freezer packs.
Any oregano leftover will be dried to be used this winter.
Did you know oregano is a key ingredient when making taco or burrito seasoning? 🥳

These adorable little tomato plants churn out startlingly numbers of perfect tiny tomatoes, even if grown in terrible conditions.
These pretty tomatoes will be frozen whole, along with fresh oregano, basil, and some sweet peppers, to be used this winter.

Last of my green and yellow beans are going strong. 🥳
The seeds were planted the first week of July, and this is my second harvest from 8 yellow beans, and 5 green bean plants.
640 grams of absolutely beautiful beans. 😁😁😁😁🌱🌱🌱🌱
They will be combined with rainbow carrots and green zucchini to make the next group of veggie freezer packs. 💚

Today's message ....
I'm guessing most gardeners plant at least a few things, never expecting them to actually grow.
For me, this year, that was corn and eggplant.
I had great success with the seedlings, but honestly wasn't expecting much from either.
The eggplant were planted in random open spots around the garden, and the ten corn plants were interplanted with scarlet runner beans, with the hope that the corn stalks would support the beans, which I'm growing for seeds.
Well, the random eggplants are churning out absolutely gorgeous little eggplants, and the corn actually made tiny, but completely perfect, cobs of very, very pretty corn. 🌽🌽🌽
Not bad for all organic, no compost, low budget planting. Sometimes stuff just works out. 🥳🥳🥳

These Flambo and Scarlet Runner Beans will be vacuum packed and frozen in small bags with sliced zucchini, sweet peppers, fresh basil and oregano. To be enjoyed this winter.
Broad beans provide huge return on investment for very little work or cost.
Plus, they are gorgeous, and the Flambos are easier to see when picking.
I picked 5.5 lbs of young Flambo Beans from roughly 20 plants in 30 minutes, and that's our second pick. Roddy picked 3 lbs on the first harvest from that group.
There are only a few Scarlet Runner Beans in this mix, and my first group are just getting going.

The garlic dill pickles were so good that I'm making loads more. 🥳
Today I added a new flavour to the collection - fermented Italian flat beans with fresh garlic and sweet banana peppers. 🌶️ Excited to try them in a few days. 😁
Tomorrow, I'm trying something totally new, in an effort to use up my mountain of fresh cilantro....
This recipe is pretty close to how I ferment, so I'm keen to give it a try.

Adaptability is key when growing food, and I'm working on it constantly.
Over the past few years, I've been dealing with leopard slugs wrecking havoc on my container garden, so this year I made a change.
I took advantage of the rocky section in our courtyard, created a "sanctuary" for the plants, and results have wildly exceeded my expectations.
There is definitely something to be said for persistence. Not perfect, but makes me very happy.
