This is why your turn does not come from pulling on the rein. Note the riders hand and leg position and hip angle in each sketch. Note the development of the horses muscles in each sketch. Note the shape of the horse in each sketch. A truly supple, truly bent horse is working through their entire body. It is OUR job as the rider to guide the horse to become soft, supple, and through in all movements.

Rider one is pulling the nose around, and trying to push the haunches in, with a following outside rein offering the horse no balance, and a hardly supportive inside leg to wrap around. This has created a rigid, stiff horse that will surely be back sore, weak in the hind end, with front end bulk in all the wrong places. This horse has every opportunity, and will likely be so uncomfortable that it will try every time, to run out of his right shoulder.

Rider two is pushing the horse from his inside leg to his outside rein. The outside rein is providing a balance point for the horse, allowing him to be both comfortable and willing to carry himself. Because the riders rein is supportive and blocking the shoulder, the horse can not blow out the shoulder, and can only become truly bent along the entire length of the spine.

In order to build the athlete you want, and to allow your horse the opportunity to have a long, successful, and most importantly SOUND career, it is important to understand how we ride, even in seemingly simple tasks such as the walk or trotting circles, is effecting each muscle in your horses body. Not all muscle is good muscle!

This past weekend was an amazing and transformative educational event held at Stonehedge Stables in Gadshill, ON.

Nuno Cavaco generously shared his expertise to educate and train a diverse selection of riders and horses over 3 days. He demonstrated and taught classical technique for riding, working in hand and in long lines. Everyone took away precious information to transform their relationship with their horse.

Thank you to all that participated and audited!

On Moving Meditation -a new look at Geometry!

In my interview with Tracey Mitchell on - Hitting Your Stride Podcast, I discussed how working the circle on the lunge is meditative and that the purpose of the exercise was to develop balance, rhythm, relaxation and awareness - both in the horse and handler. In fact the exercise brings us together....

Tuesday thoughts ☕

On teaching:

When I was in grade 2, my teacher hit me with a ruler when I go the wrong answer in mathematics. At that time, I was learning addition and subtraction.

The only thing that came out of that experience was fear and humiliation. In this case, associated with numbers. For the rest of my academic life I wrestled with a hesitancy and reluctance to tackle new algorithms, do my work in maths/sciences. That fear did not 'go away' after grade 2. Instead I just gravitated to the Arts. I DID the math work and succeeded, however the subjects were never enjoyable for me. Whereas, I know that maths and sciences are very pleasant subjects and can be extremely comfortable to learn -especially because of the predictability and structure of the material.

What resulted from this experience for me was that it promoted in me a compassion for teaching. My experience, and my study of pedagogy in teaching formed my teaching practice, and I taught elementary school for 25 years.

I taught things like 'long division'. Each year, I greeted a new group of learners and one of the most common palpable concerns from new students at the beginning of the school year was learning long division. Students would introduce themselves to me like this; "Hi I'm (name) I have a brother, two dogs, I love to dance and swim, I'm really good at making stories, and I cannot do long division"

I know emphatically that good learning cannot take place under stress. This is proven. Anxiety is counter-productive to learning. My biggest concern here, is that a student is stressed, and that the learning process is already compromised. I need to immediately diffuse the stress and offer hope, so this student can reframe the thought about the subject, and has confidence in me as a teacher/guide and can show up each day with a positive feeling toward learning - not dread.

"The process of learning is more important that the product"

Read that again.

"Well, long division is only one thing we will learn this year, but we have a whole year to learn it! A year is a long time!"
"What if I show you that you already have the tools to do it, and I guide you step by step, until you get it?"
"I have always found that students find long division fun - once they feel confident with it!"

Fast forward to the horse training/teaching connection - because there always is a horse connection:

Fear, stress and humiliation has no place in training horses or teaching riders. It is counter-productive in all learning. That is not my opinion (although my opinion is based on 25 years of professional practice) - it is a scientific truth.

The most important element to training/teaching is to establish a "process" that promotes feelings of comfort, trust, curiosity.

The process of learning is more important than the product.

There is a lingering archaic mentality that the best way to learn the right way is to make the wrong way unpleasant. This can create a lot of unnecessary tension, and anxiety - both in horse and rider. It's unpleasant. The process becomes unpleasant. The culture becomes unpleasant, and soon unpleasant is just tolerated, anxiety and fear become normal and the collateral damage is that no one is really learning. It's not hard to find evidence of this, and it is very difficult to turn around once it is set in.

How do we develop a 'process' for learning?

1) relationship must come first = trust in guide/teacher
2) learning comes from curiosity
3) clear predictable language needs to be established
4) program in small steps which connect/ build onto each other
5) successes must be prioritized and celebrated
6) experiencing purpose for the learned content brings joy

The most successful teachers communicate confidence, joy in the subject, and can create playful curiosity towards learning.
