FSAR Feral Soul Animal Rescue We have a mission to humanely help control the feral and abandoned cat problem in Newfoundland. We will never euthanize a healthy animal.

We do this by TNR programs as well as microchipping to track all rescues should they be lost and recovered.

To whom ever dropped off the bag of food, I heard you but I didn't see you. Thank you very much😊

I would like to extend a very special thank you to Shawn Lisa Gidge and Connie Canning for the exceptional work they have done for the rescue. Our rescue has come a long way since you joined and could never have made it this far without you. Because of you, we have been able to help so many more cats from across the island. And so many of them now have their perfect homes.😁 You will be missed.😞 Again many thanks for everything.😊We wish you the best😊

I've noticed there was a little concerned about ginger snap being in a cage. So I left his cage open overnight to explain why.
Ginger Snap has anxiety. When he becomes overly anxious he bites. He feels his cage is his security. He has everything he needs and others cannot disturb him if he does not want to be disturbed.
So...
Throughout the night I took snapshots on the security cameras at various times. This is what we found.
Ginger Snap would sit near the open door as if guarding it. Eventually one of the cats, boots, invaded his space and started eating his food. By midnight he had no food left. So if he became hungry, he would be forced to leave his cage and go into an unfamiliar area. Even so, Ginger Snap did not leave his cage. He patiently waited for me at 6:30 a.m. to feed him.
Allowing cats to invade the personal space of an anxious cat can result in a fight. A fight can end up causing the other cats to start fighting. This is the last thing we want. We make sure all of our cats are happy and content. For this they have to feel safe. This is why ginger snaps cage is locked while no one is there to prevent others from invading his space. As soon as he feels secure enough to leave the cage, I'm sure he will be just fine with everyone. His biting has become gentle and he hasn't drawn blood in 6 days now.😁 everyday I allow him to bite me to help teach him how hard to bite and how much is too hard. His bites are always playful and never aggressive and he has come a long way with his control. But most importantly he's always happy😊😁 below you can see each photo taken throughout the night. Ginger snap never left his cage once and Boots committed 2 home invasions during the night🙄😂

Sal was euthanized at 1:15pm 😞

Update 11:55 a.m. sunday. After a night of IV fluids Sal is feeling a bit better. He is much more alert and has a good appetite. The tumor does not seem to have changed or moved so surgery would be required but they would like to keep him on IV fluids for one more day before attempting surgery. If he does make it through surgery his prognosis would be another 6 months to a year to live. Currently the bill is $1,800. Surgery would add another 3,000. I simply don't have the money😭 little Sal still wants to live but unfortunately no matter what we do he has little time left. I am on my way to Grand Falls to be with him it is final moments before we authorize euthanasia :-( I'm so sorry Sal😭

Update 4:00 pm. Ultrasound had unusual results not seen by the vet before. He will need surgery but would not survive in his current condition. Sal will be held overnight with IV fluids and monitored for improvement. We will see how he is tomorrow afternoon.

Update 8:10am. X-rays show enlarged kidneys and a third Mass below the right kidney. Blood tests show he is in stage 3 kidney failure. They also show very low red blood cell count so he is anemic and he is also in liver failure. :-( they are now performing an ultrasound to determine whether the third Mass is benign or malignant. We will know more in an hour

Well there's no rest. We have issues with Sal. He has been losing weight for the past week and feeling a little lethargic. We had an appointment for him next Friday but this morning his left eye was clouded and his right pupil was dilated. So 5:30 a.m. we are off to emergency. We are now at exploits Valley Animal Hospital in Grand Falls. After his preliminary examination, vitals appear to be fine although they found a mass in his abdomen. We are currently doing x-rays, ultrasound, and blood work.

Seems midnight and star have a taste for meat. They have very little interest in drinking kitten milk replacement.😄 and boy what an appetite. Between the two of them they eat as much as a full grown adult😁 after eating its playtime for about 15 or 20 minutes and then they both have a nap. You can almost see them grow second by second😂

We are short some kitties this morning since they have vet appointments. We have lots of kitties but it still feels a little empty without them. Millie has gone in for her vaccination and Bubbles is being spayed. Sasha lives upstairs and she is also getting a checkup for her upper respiratory issue and her thyroid😊

This is why vaccinations are important for indoor cats too

Panleukopenia

Is probably one of the worst diseases out there.

Panleukopenia doesn't care if it's a 200gram kitten or a five pound cat, or a cat that is fully vaccinated.

Although you would think the kitten without vaccines is most likely to die. Nope. The five pound cat with no vaccines will go. The fully vaccinated usually lives and recover.

Panleukopenia is an invisible disease. You can't see it and oftentimes you don't know it has hit your cat until you find your cat dead.

Symptoms range from diarrhea, or no diarrhea. Throwing up or not throwing up. Stop eating and lose weight. They will lose massive amounts of weight in less than 24 hours. High fever. Become weak, sleeping, not walking. Hover over the water bowl. Once caught your cat could die within hours or days. If not treated.

Every cat has a chance to catch this evil disease. You may think your inside cats are safe. They are not. Here is why. You can't see panleukopenia. Panleukopenia can be anywhere. Your yard, a parking lot, a field, a store. You walk through it. It's on your shoes. Now you track it into your house. Onto your carpets. Into your car. Into a store for someone else to step in and track home.

It takes one speck of p**p. One tiny, you can't see with your eyes speck of p**p, for your cat to be exposed.

This is why vaccines are urgent. This is why we go through four trays of vaccines a week. At a cost of 500 per week to the rescue.

It's not enough.

A few years ago when I was with a different rescue and trapping for them. Panleukopenia was rampant. Every kitten brought it had it. Many died. Vets would diagnose it yet only send you home with clavamox and a good luck. Those were the good vets. The bad ones just wished you luck.

At that time I dug into the research of panleukopenia. Found they needed a whole series of meds. Tamiflu, clavamox, metro. Plus fluids, syringe feeding, I have since added b-12 and rebound. It may seem like a lot but spaced over a 24 hour period it is not.

I didn't see panleukopenia again until last year. I treated six. I won six times.

This year is different, this strain feels different. Two fosters have been hit. I do treat my cats in rescue with the works. I have test kits on hand and can test anytime.

But in the end this disease is evil. And it doesn't care and it will take who it wants. I was treating six yesterday. Between 3am and 6am three lost their battle and left me bawling. The three remaining made it another day. Then a foster reached out. She was one that was hit. I told her one sign and bring me the kitten. Today she saw a sign and I have her kitten. So I'm treating four now.

This is what breaks a rescue owner. Knowing you are literally doing everything you can and it's not enough. You get attached. So much time is spent tending to them. You beg them to stay. You beg them not to die. Then you beat yourself up. What more could I have done.

The answer is nothing more could have been done.

I don't take this lightly. These kittens are in complete isolation. I wear gloves and different clothes and any towels I use or bedding I use, is tossed. I don't wear shoes in. I change socks coming out. Things are sprayed with Rescue often.

I know we will get through this season and hundreds or thousands of kittens will go through the rescue. And they will all grow up, and move out. And they won't ever experience this. Because we start vaccines early and often.

I beg of you to have your cats vaccinated and to stay current on the vaccines.

This is Marley the only bright spot is his last two meals have stayed down.

This is panleukopenia....this is hell.
