Some neat cat facts for the day!
We can't stress enough the importance of microchips!
This kitty is Tom. Tom went missing in April. He was found by a concerned citizen who contacted us to intake after he'd been seen hanging around.
The finder took him in to a vet clinic for a microchip scan and it was determined that he did in fact have ID. Since his owner had kept their information up to date, Tom was able to go back home.

Hello everyone!
We had wanted to make this post a bit sooner but have been very busy. I’d like to clear up a bit of a misunderstanding.
When we signed our one year lease last year, we were told there may be the possibility to extend. We received the keys to the building September 1st and were able to start operating October 1st. Unfortunately, the building we were in was posted for sale and we were not granted a lease extension. We will be handing the keys back over tomorrow.
HOWEVER, this does not mean our program has ended. We are currently housing cats found in Strathcona County through volunteer’s homes. While we have a much lower capacity for cats at this time, we are still operating the shelter program. We currently have cats in homes that are still on their stray hold, and we will continue this program at least until the end of the calendar year.
It is our hope that we will soon be able to look for a new and better building that will house many more cats. We have big plans for the future!

We have some very sad news to share with our GEARS family.
Some of you may have seen Paris on our GEARS Sheltered Paws page. She came into our care in pretty rough shape, dehydrated and underweight. She was brought in to one of our vets, Edmonton South Animal Hospital, where it was determined she was in kidney failure. Our team made the very tough decision to end her suffering and say goodbye.
Although she wasn't with us long, she left an imprint on our hearts, and we are thankful she could pass peacefully with volunteers who loved her dearly.

We hate to have to make this post but we are at capacity.
We are trying to move cats out of the shelter to make room but this is a very hard time for all rescues.
If you find a cat that may be lost, please post to local neighborhood pages, lost pets pages, or contact us to do a courtesy post. Any vet will scan for a microchip and you can try a paper collar (more info here https://www.cats.org.uk/croydon/news/paper-collars-for-stray-cats). As it’s summer, many cats are let out to roam. If the cat is not in distress, please monitor it as it may just go home on its own.

Our friends over at Sherwood Park News put out a great article about GEARS Sheltered Paws. Starting a 100% volunteer run cat shelter from scratch with a one year term has definitely not been easy. No one knew how many cats would come through our doors and as the word spreads, our numbers keep growing higher. We are now at 115 intakes - 72 from 2023 alone. We are grateful for the support of the community and the understanding and patience while we navigate this new world of shelter life.
GEARS is hopeful that we will be granted funding for at least 3 years so we can continue to serve Strathcona County. As mentioned, our biggest expenses are rent and vet bills. We have been lucky enough to receive donations to help us run the shelter (washing machine, computers, furniture, kitty litter, laundry detergent, etc) and have also received donations from local pet stores for purchased supplies like our cat cages. GEARS has an amazing group of partner vets that offer us discounted rates and outstanding care for our animals. We have many ideas on how to help get the word out, ways to share education on responsible pet ownership, upgraded cat housing, and new and exciting events to hold in the community.
We hope you will come to our Craft Fair on Saturday at the Agora, and our Summer Pawliday Sale at the Shelter July 22nd.

Reunited and it feels so good!!
Obi and Luther were both cats found in Strathcona County that didn’t belong in the areas they were found (the finders had checked with neighbours). Appointments were made with us and we took both cats in. Part of our intake procedure is to check for tattoo or microchip and luckily both kitties had microchips with up to date owner information!!
Obi had been missing since May 19 and Luther had gone missing from a pet sitter over a week ago. We’re happy to say both cats are back home where they belong living their best lives!!
This was spent painting with foster and alumni dogs, and shelter kitties! Everyone did a great job!
We had a fun day at GEARS Sheltered Paws yesterday! Our shelter kitties, and some foster and alumni doggos worked hard on some art for an upcoming event 💜🎨🐾

How quickly things change in rescue. Sunday, Crackers continued to have more (albeit less severe) seizures. She returned to Pulse Veterinary Specialists & Emergency and was put on anti seizure medication and had a consult with a neurologist. It was agreed that an MRI with a kitten of Crackers’s size would be risky so we will continue her on anti seizure medications until she is older then wean her off of them. If the seizures continue at that point, we will revisit further testing. We are happy to report that Crackers is back in her foster home and doing well. It was noted she has some inflammation and redness on her eye so she is currently getting eye drops on top of her anti seizure medication (every 8 hours).
