Something we often don’t think about when it comes to pets is toy hygiene. Because dogs use their mouths to play, it’s important to clean their most loved toys to prevent the accumulation of bacteria. It’s also important to set regular reminders for yourself to go through your pets toys and remove any that are torn/tattered as these can become a choking hazard or have the potential to be ingested and can cause a blockage. We’ve created a short guide to narrow down some safe & effective cleaning methods for each toy type!
🥏 Rubber, plastic or nylon toys: these items can be hand washed in a sink or tub with warm water and antibacterial dish soap. Use a toothbrush to scrub any crevices. For extra grimy toys, you can pre-soak them in 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water for 15 minutes prior to scrubbing.
🪢 Rope toys: the most effective method for cleaning rope toys is to put them through the laundry. Most of these items are also safe for the dryer as well! Stick with low heat cycles to prevent damage to the toys.
🧸 Plush toys with squeakers: hand wash these toys with warm water and dish soap, avoid hot water to prevent damaging any squeakers or internal components.

⭐️Tech Tip Tuesday⭐️ Scratching in Cats
Scratching is a natural, innate behaviour of cats, which is one of the reasons it can be so difficult to modify. It is virtually impossible to remove the desire for cat’s to scratch, this is how they communicate and mark their territory in the wild. Though this can be frustrating for many owners, we’re here to provide some tips on how to prevent your feline friends from scratching unwanted surfaces.
The goal, is to transfer the cats scratching instinct to materials designed for scratching.
1. Cats prefer upholstered material in a vertical direction, you can place these items near the area they are scratching and hopefully deter them from the furniture you would like to avoid
2. Place plastic, double sided tape, or foil over the target pieces of furniture while you’re working to redirect them, this will remove the temptation to scratch specific items
3. Use treats and catnip on the desired scratching surface to entice them
4. Punishment in these scenarios isn’t recommended, if your cat connects the punishment to their owner, they will stop scratching in their presence and the behaviour will remain unchanged
5. Frequent nail trimming
6. Acrylic nail caps. These are placed over each individual nail to provide a blunt end that is unable to cause trauma during scratching behaviour. These do come off in time and need to be replaced.
The declaw surgical procedure (removing the nail entirely) is no longer performed routinely. This procedure has been deemed unethical and invasive. There are many alternatives to prevent cats from scratching unwanted surfaces. It’s important to remember that this is a natural behaviour, and like all behaviour modification techniques, it will take time to change.
