Finally getting around to dealing with the last of this year’s garlic harvest. I’ve frozen, pickled, added some to honey, and this last bunch will get minced then dehydrated and then some ground into powder.
Note, yes you can receive a chemical burn from the oil.

It was a nice morning to pick Saskatoons. It was smokey but that kept it cooler than yesterday.

Made some Haskap jam today. This version was just haskaps and sugar with a touch of maple extract. Tomorrow I’m making another batch but adding in rhubarb.
Love being able to make food for my family from what is plentiful on our land.

Grapes were really slow to come to life this year, but I see clusters, fingers crossed we have heat and moisture.

Well I lost some of my squash, bush beans and tomatoes due to frost at the acreage. I’ll reseed the beans and see if I can find a few replacement plants. What a weird weather year.

After planting 40 trees today, this is going to taste so good. I love cooking outdoors.

Rhubarb Mojito
Ingredients:
1/2 cup fresh rhubarb, chopped
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup water
8-10 fresh mint leaves
1 lime, cut into wedges
2 oz white rum
Club soda
Ice cubes
Fresh cucumber slices (optional)
Fresh mint sprig for garnish
Instructions:
Prepare the Rhubarb Syrup:

In a small saucepan, combine the chopped rhubarb, granulated sugar, and water.
Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, or until the rhubarb is soft and the mixture has thickened.
Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve, pressing down to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the solids.
Let the rhubarb syrup cool to room temperature.
Muddle the Mint and Lime:

In a tall glass, add the fresh mint leaves and lime wedges.
Use a muddler or the back of a spoon to gently muddle the mint and lime to release their flavors.
Assemble the Mojito:

Add the cooled rhubarb syrup to the glass.
Pour in the white rum.
Fill the glass with ice cubes.
Top off with club soda.
Stir gently to combine.
Garnish and Serve:

Add fresh cucumber slices to the drink, if desired.
Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.
Serve immediately.
Enjoy your vibrant and refreshing Rhubarb Mojito!

I’m all about repurposing. There was a play structure on the acreage when we bought it. We don’t have any littles that would use it so we decided to repurpose it for a deck for our trailer. Still lots of work to do, but I’m excited to get these non gardening things completed before I get too busy with planting.

An interesting article about PFAS forever chemicals. At the farm we use particularly green manure ( plant debris) or compost made on the farm and we are grateful for our well water so we don’t have to use tap water that can carry the PFAS.

Canada currently doesn’t test its agricultural soils for PFAS like some American states. But changes are coming.
