There are so many aspects to breeding dogs. Some are obvious....dog shows, vet visits, health testing, puppies, mentoring new families, staying in touch with families....

But one aspect that doesn't often get much attention is rehoming an older dog whose owner has run into hard times.
My contract states that if a family is no longer able to take care of their dog they must return it to me. This is so none of my puppy's end up in a puppy mill, a shelter or a terrible living situation.

The only exception is if they the owners find a home that meets with my blessing...a home that meets my criteria of a loving, healthy and stimulating environment.

So about Riley...

Riley turned 11 this week. That very same day her owner, Norm, contacted me because his health has taken a turn and he needed help with Riley. He is in the hospital which will likely be followed with a facility for physical therapy. So at 85, he can no longer take care of her. And there is no one else at home. Norm's son comes to visit and takes her out to potty but this is difficult for him as he has other committments.

I remembered Norm. He took over a commercial space that I had rented for years for my flower shop (this goes back a ways! LOL). Norm is a good man and a talented hair dresser who ran his own salon for a long time.

Anyway, of course I told him I would help.

As I said, Riley is 11. She will be current on her vaccines and assessed by my veterinarian. Norm tells me she is active, happy and loves go running with his son once a week. Your only cost will be to cover her vet visit, vaccine updates and any needs she has in this interim period. She is housebroken, a good traveller, and very intelligent. She likes to take walks but doesn't depend on them. I can also tell you that she has been well taken care of.

Havanese are healthy dogs that typically live 15-16 years. Many live to 19 or 20! Riley would be a great companion for an older couple or individual.

This is Porsche! He is 11 weeks old, full of puppy energy and loves people! He is out of our "sportscar" litter.

And he is looking for a home. He has had two vaccines, has been thoroughly checked out by my vet and has no issues.

He would be great in an active family and loves children.

His mom is our AKC champion, Sunshine, and his dad, Georgio, is an AKC Gold Champion!

Both parents have passed all their CHIC (health testing).

Havanese lovers BEWARE!!!

There is a new scam on Facebook. It is a page called "Havanese puppies for adoption and re-homing". By replying directly to folks who comment on my posts, these people have posted ads on my Page, without my permission, over several dozen times purporting to offer healthy, happy puppies. It they were truly happy and healthy, these people would not have to ride on the backs of a successful, ethical and honorable breeder.

I have deleted as many of their posts from my page as I have found. But if I missed any, or if you are inclined to check them out, be sure you do your homework.

Ask for proof of their OFA health testing of all breeding adults. Ask to come to their homes to see how the puppies are raised. Ask if they will take their puppies back for any reason if you are unhappy with its health, temperament or any other reason. And get all of this in writing!

December will be a very busy month for Carneys Haven and not for the usual reasons. Besides all the holiday festivities we will be welcoming two litters into this world!

Tango and Harley are expecting December 15 and Meri and Phantom are expecting December 19. All four dogs are Grand Champions!

Meri is almost all white and Phantom is all black. This is Meri's first litter.

Tango is tan and white and Harley is black and white. Harley is owned by my friend Marcy Skirvin. X-rays next week will give us an idea of how many pups to expect.

Harley (black and white) and Tango (cream and tan-first 2 photos) are expecting December 15. Then Meri (being "handled" at the vet by my 4 month old puppy) and Phantom (all black) are due December 19!

I am very excited about both these breedings. All four dogs are Grand Champions...not that wonderful pet families care much about that. But beyond the fact that they are excellent examples of Havanese, they all have delightful, playful and goofy temperaments!!

As difficult as it is, I have decided to rehome my 9 month old girl, Tillie. At 9" and 8.9 #, t doesn't look like she will be big enough for showing or breeding. She is a sweet, outgoing and playful pup. Smart as a whip. And brave as they come. No confidence issues here! She comes from several generations of health certified parents, is current on all her vaccinations and has passed all health tests appropriate for her age.
