We’ve reached a point after 37 months of intense camping on the land from day 1 to enjoying neighbour visits in the house, eating apples and a lovely salad from a short garden walk!
There will never be a shortage of things to do on this land, but it doesn’t get much better than this for being self sufficient and comfortable and it’s feeling amazing!

After some much needed July rain showers, the plants are looking nice.
Highly recommend the Caraflex Cabbage, we just ate that one in a salad as if it was a lettuce. Great way to have refreshing salads through the summer after most of the lettuce has bolted.

Two big days. Concrete grinding done!
3 different grits - 30, 60, 100
Still lots of clean up and then we can put down our sealer. Here’s a little preview.
Grandma was an avid rock collector, and now some of her spectacular pieces are proudly showing off in our floor.

The chickens had the complete run of the gardens for the winter and now they are settling in to their new house.
Enjoying the fruits 🥚🍳 of our labour already!
Feels good to have those little garden scratchers behind their fence now just as our seedlings are getting going. Also, no more 💩 on our deck!

Just the other day I noticed these raspberries beginning to break dormancy and start sprouting...
-6°C ❄️ The eager garden will have to wait a few more weeks. Just when we got a little too content about this nice winter weather February gets us again.

Today reminded us why we need to work extremely hard for a more comfortable farm life. This is what it’s all about!
Fresh eggs for baking in the wood cook stove, and a nice batch of hard boiled eggs.
As we get more set up this year, we look forward to being able to process more and more products from the garden!

Big day pulling out the maple sections ready to be milled for the house interior!
Got a yard bag filled with maple chips we use for growing mushrooms like Oyster, King Stropharia, and many more soon!

2018: Year of the house!

Nice to reflect on the years progress.
Looking forward to 2019, we will be working on the finishing touches in the house, and a lot more fine woodworking projects coming up!

And there it is. Third Christmas on Gambier. First in our own house that WE built!!
What a good place to be at finally after the first couple years which was pretty rough.

We might have a toilet hooked up soon! 😄
