Knowing the risks and signs of heat stroke in dogs is especially important on days like today and tomorrow, as temperatures are expected to reach 40 °C with the humidex. All dogs should have very limited outdoor activity during peak hours (8 am - 8 pm), regardless of age or breed as the risk of heat-related illness is severe.

With wildlife, litter kills. This juvenile Red Fox was entangled in a plastic 6 pack holder. The resulting lacerations were so severe that we suspect he has been tangled in this piece of litter for quite some time and has grown around it. It finally reached a point where it was fully restricting his movement and had caused damage to the underlying tissues and muscle.

Our Cape Cod veterinary team sedated the fox and carefully cut away the plastic rings. The wounds were cleaned and then bandaged. He has been started on antibiotics, fluids and strong pain medications. His prognosis is guarded, but we are keeping our fingers crossed for this little guy.

Please remember to dispose of litter properly, and ALWAYS cut apart your plastic rings before disposal. It could save a life.

You may have noticed lots of these little critters around lately that LOOK like Ladybugs, however they are Asian beetles. They bite, they stink and fly around. If you have dogs or cats, make sure to check the roof of their mouths, once in the mouth they stick to the roof and make it very very sore. They are horrible little things!
