How it all started
Back in 1989, I was looking for the perfect dog for me. To help me find it, I bought a book called 'Les chiens du monde' and totally fell in love with the flat-coated retriever. But in those days, resources to find a breeder in Canada were limited and that's how Octave (Octave Moun), a pure-bred golden retriever, came in my life. He stayed with me for more than fourteen years,
following me everywhere I was going. In 2001, Octave was 12 years old and the timing was right to get him a new partner. Together we went to puppy class and from a simple house dog he was supposed to be, he became a fantastic obedience and field dog, putting titles over titles, in Canada and USA. Darwin was my first 'Obedience Trial Champion', a funny one! In 2003, Octave passed away and Darwin was left alone, it was time to have my second flatcoat. A sweet little girl named Nova arrived my life. What I did not know at the time is that her and Darwin were going to change my life forever. Nova spent eleven years with me, becoming my second 'Obedience Trial Champion' dog, allowing me to found Knightcastle in 2005 with the David Bowie litter, sired by international Champion Bowie (Serilde Velenocelestiale). She passed away in August 2014, leaving behind her a humongous legacy all accross North America. All the dogs here at Knightcastle are directly coming from her. We currently have four generations. From the first litter, I kept two fantastic dogs, Céleste and Baxter. Among with Nova and Darwin, these four dogs competed in show, obedience and also hunt tests, putting Knightcastle on the map as a serious North American kennel. Céleste became my third 'Obedience Trial Champion' dog and Baxter ading show, obedience and field titles in Canada and USA, still being the only Knightcastle dog to achieve this. My current dogs are my veterans Holly and Hopper (who lives in Vermont), both from the second generation. My youngsters are Blanche (third generation), Avril (Blanche's daughter from the fourth generation) and a new boy, César (last from our third generation). I lost my special boy Forrest (from the second generation) in September 2018 and my sweet Cosette (third generation) on January 22 2020 just a couple days after she was bred for the first time. My dogs are part of my life and are living in the house with me, no kennel. My house is surrounded with acres of fields and nearby lakes. They are very active dogs and are in excellent health. I am not pushing them with over-training and retire them from competition at a young age. All my dogs made their Championships in the 'Bred by exhibitor' class, handling them myself. I am also a CKC carrying judge for hunt tests and working certificates for retrievers. Each litter is carefully planned considering the quality, health clearances (OFA), the pedigree and also the accomplishments of both the Sire and the Dam. Knightcastle is breeding high quality flat-coated retrievers for temperament, type and soundness, dogs with good working abilities and outgoing personalities. The flat-coated retriever is still considered a 'multi-purpose' dog in Europe and Knightcastle is always keeping that in mind, not breeding for one specific goal or purpose. We have a litter on the ground only from time to time, mainly to fulfill my own requirement, not to accommodate the demands. In December 2015, the Canadian Kennel Club recognized Knightcastle's hard work and commitment to the breed and granted Knightcastle the status of 'Permanent Registration of a Kennel Name'. Knightcastle is breeding only black flat-coated retrievers and is not giving any breeding rights.
