Puppy vaccines!

It can be stressful having a new puppy and remembering everything they need. When it comes to puppy vaccines (and kitten vaccines) it is best practice to vaccinate at 6, 12, and 16 weeks old. During this time they will receive their core vaccines, DAPPv and Rabies (Cats with receive FVRCP and Rabies). They will get DAPPv/FVRCP at all three vaccination appointments while the rabies vaccine will only be given once they reach 16 weeks.

Vaccines when administered stimulate the body’s immune system to recognize and fight the microorganism. If in the future your dog or cat is exposed to this microorganism your pet has a better chance at fighting it or getting less severe symptoms.

Call and book your appointment today to get your new family members vaccinated!

🐾STAFF FEATURE🐾
Meet Precious, our newest receptionist. She joined the Riverstone family a few months ago and she has been an amazing addition to our team. Her favourite part about vet med is learning something new and unique everyday, and having the opportunity to work closely with a dedicated and hardworking team. Precious is best known for her sweet treats, in which all the staff fight over them!! A fun fact about Precious is she rode her first horse bare back at a work function this year! We are thankful for the addition of Precious and her compassion and kindness in the veterinary field.

Summer means fun, sun, and a whole lot of heat. The high temperatures can be dangerous for us and our four legged friends.

Heat exhaustion is also called hyperthermia, which occurs when your body temperature rises above the normal range and the body is no longer able to self regulate body temperature.

Ways to prevent -
☀️ Never leave your dog inside a parked car. Even it’s just for a minute. Dogs are much more sensitive to heat than we are!
☀️ Try to take your dog out during the cooler hours of the day ( morning and evening).
☀️Provide enough fresh water.

Signs to look for -
🐶Excessive panting or difficulty breathing.
🐶 Dehydration (See Mondays post for more details)
🐶Fever, anything over 39.0 Degrees Celsius could be considered hyperthermic.
🐶 Increased heart rate
🐶 Lethargy or weakness
🐶 Vomiting and/or diarrhea
🐶 Dizziness and/or disorientation

How to treat -
🧊 Take your pet to a cooler area.
🧊 Wet pet with cool water. (Do not use COLD water, it is counterintuitive) Small dogs it is best to start with lukewarm water.
🧊 Apply cool water around their paws and ears.
🧊 Provide pet with cool water, again not COLD.
🧊 Call your veterinarian as soon as possible. Even if your pet seems to be recovering ok, there is always the risk of shock, dehydration, kidney failure, and or other complications following heat exhaustion.

Seek veterinary care immediately if your pet loses consciousness or becomes severely ill. We are available for 24 hour emergency services. Do not hesitate to call!

Call out for neighborly help!!

As the wildfires creep closer to home, we'd like to help organize assistance/relief for those in need of a temporary place to stay for their animals in the event of an evacuation.

Please let us know if you have space to take in any animals; whether it be barn space, out buildings, or a spare room in your home. Also if you are able to help trailer livestock, any help is definitely appreciated!

Please let us know if you might be in need of temporary refuge for your animals during this time and we will do what we can to get you in touch with a helping hand!

This is heat is hot and it’s not letting up! It is important as pet owners that we educate ourselves on the signs and symptoms of dehydration and ways to prevent it in our pets.

Typical signs of dehydration in your pet could include;
💧Dry and/or tacky gums
💧Panting
💧Thick saliva
💧Sunken eyes
💧Vomiting
💧Loss of appetite
💧Dry nose
💧Lethargy

These are few common signs that you can keep an eye out for in this weather. Ways we can help prevent dehydration on our animals may look like; Insuring to keep plenty of water available at all times and bringing water on roads trip, hikes, etc. It could be choosing cooler times of the day to do outdoor activities or adding in some wet food into the diet.

Dehydration can become a serious problem if let untreated or if it is prolong for to long. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to either clinic and remember we are available for 24 hour emergency services.

Stay cool 💧

Is your pet microchipped?

Microchipping is a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed to help ensure your information is accessible if your pet gets lost.

At Riverstone we typically place microchips during spays, neuters, sedated or general anesthetic procedures. It is possible to place microchips during wellness appointments or vaccine appointments as well!

With the changes in international travel with dogs going to the U.S it is mandatory that your dog is microchipped. For more information on the new changes please visit our website and read July’s Newsletter.

With all the fun and sun that comes with summer, it is important that we keep our pets safe.

Fireworks 🎆
Pets often will display signs of fear and anxiety associated with loud sounds such as fireworks or thunder. Signs may include;
- Panting
- Drooling
- Tremors
- Hiding
- Barking
Make sure your pet has a safe place to be away from loud sounds and insure your pet is on leash if outdoors.

Hot pavement 🔥
The heat is well on its way and it is also very hot for our furry friends. Are your pets paws protected? If you plan on walking on pavement or hot surfaces during this heat make sure your pets paws are protected. You can do this by getting your furry friend booties to protect their paws or trying to walk on grass more often.

Campfires 🏕️
When enjoying a late night fire it is important we keep our pets close and out of harms way. Ensure that you are never leaving open flames unattended. Make sure your pet is microchipped or tattoo in case you get separated and make sure you and your pet are a safe distance from the fire.

Summer comes with lots of fun but lots of responsibilities as pet owners. If you have any questions or need some guidance don’t hesitate to reach out!
