We need our dogs to growl so we know when they are close to their limit. That they really need us to listen and things are getting serious.

They are never a warning we should seek to remove but one we should be glad to hear. Because that’s what’s going to prevent things from escalating further.

Kaia is Leonberger girl 🐶 and a lap dog 😂
I just couldn’t choose and all snap shots look great and made my day 🫶🏻💕

She is nervous & sensitive but has grown up 🥰 I noticed the other day she laid down and put her head down on the floor for the first time. So we tried brushing her on the floor and look what happened!

Once she settled down, she let me brush bum, inside leg and base tail area which she almost never stay relaxed for that when she was on the table.

As well as Show Tech pin brush which has rounded pins is gentle in skin and coat yet it does great job 👏🏻 If your dog doesn’t like being brush, this might be a good try! URBAN DOGS

It happened today without announcement 🥰

Bailey had very traumatic experience at a salon.
It’s almost 2 years since I started grooming her at her home. She never let me pet her and would bite. But she lets me groom her. She would bite hard if I upset her. I had to be very careful not to pull her hair even by accident.

I had never been able to trim her nail without upsetting her but today. I did as usual, slowly but steadily. Clip, treat. Clip and treat. It was almost impossible to touch her front right paw but she didn’t get mad at me today.

In past a few times, Bailey started to bring her ball after grooming was done and ask me to throw it. But she still wouldn’t let me pet her. She would bite.

Today after grooming, she didn’t bring her ball. I thought maybe she didn’t have one near her. So we didn’t play at the end. But when I was about to leave at the door, she walked up in front of me and lay down. Showed her belly and asked me to rub her. I didn’t believe at first so I didn’t let her. But it was true that she wanted me to rub her belly today. 😭💕. At our 20th visit, it happened. I’m very just, wow 🙏💕. Thank you for trusting me😭💕

Today is .

Teaching children consent consent helps them feel that they have autonomy and agency over their bodies and choices. It also helps children feel empowered to say NO and set boundaries when they are uncomfortable in a world that doesn’t always set them up for success. Such as not always having to give everyone hugs or be touched.

Along with teaching kids consent over their bodies, an important part of our lessons as a KAD Kids Around Dogs certified professional is to teach kids and adults the consent test for dogs and cats.

As not every dog or cat wants to be touched! The consent test helps the dog or cat feel empowered to say no and to feel like their boundaries were listened to and respected.

Often times a dog or cat wants to sit next to you, without being touched. By not forcing the interaction or using the consent test to see what your dog or cat wants, you’re setting your pet up for success and helping them feel safe.

November marks Senior Pet Month - a time when we celebrate our aging animal companions & raise awareness about the special care they require as they enter their golden years! Just like humans, the bodies of our beloved pets undergo changes as they age, necessitating extra love & attention.

Arthritis is a prevalent issue among senior pets, some sources say that about 30% of pets have arthritis while others say it is up to 100% of dogs & cats over the age of 10. Just like your great uncle whose knee hurts when it's about the rain, the weather does affect your pets as well. Cold weather, for example, can decrease their mobility. They may struggle with activities like climbing stairs, walking on hard floors, or leaping onto furniture or cat trees. While arthritis can't be cured, there are steps you can take to ensure your furry friends are comfortable.

Some things you might notice in your pet that could indicate arthritis include:
- Sleeping more
- Limping or changes in mobility
- Showing discomfort or behavioral changes when touched around their joints

For both cats & dogs, consulting with a veterinarian is crucial for appropriate pain management & joint support. Joint supplements like glucosamine can be beneficial, particularly for large breed dogs, highly active pets, those with preexisting injuries, or those displaying signs of arthritis. It's vital to note that many over-the-counter medications & supplements aren't safe for pets, so always seek professional advice before administering any treatment!

Caring for senior cats can involve:
- Regular grooming as their capabilities for cleaning may change
- Providing them with a cozy, cushioned sleeping area
- Decreasing the distance necessary to jump to their favorite hiding spots

If you have concerns about your pet's mobility, early intervention is key to providing them with a long, happy, & pain-free life! Caring for senior pets is a rewarding responsibility, & by addressing their unique needs, we can ensure they enjoy their later years to the fullest 💙💚

I know she still has little hair left on her toes. But who cares, you have no idea how much she came along and we earned trust from her to clip this close and clean!

She struggled pads shave and sanitary area (lifting legs) the most. She couldn’t handle buzz of the clipper at the beginning.

Thanks for her mom and her dedication of sticking with Force Free/ Fear Free grooming allowed this result! Thank you for trusting Eppy💕

I saw a kid walking his lovely lab having a great time and then he gave him a big old yank on the lead, which was on a collar and my heart did that achy breaky thing.

Underneath that strong looking neck, are some vital life supporting structures connecting your dog’s gut and nervous system to the brain.

If you have a big dog that lunges or pulls on the lead, a collar is not going to stop him. A harness is not going to make him lunge or pull more. However, it will distribute his weight through a part of the body designed to protect the organs instead of the full pressure being on the neck and all it contains.

A yank on the lead can cause emotional associations that lead to behaviour issues and pressure around the neck can cause multiple physical injuries some terminal.

With thanks for the illustration and we recommend https://perfect-fit-dog-harness.com/harness.html

Neck injuries include bruising, whiplash, headaches, crushed trachea, damage to the larynx, fractured vertebrae, neck and spinal cord injury and paralysis or neurological problems.

If the parasympathetic nervous system is tweaked through a tug to the neck the vagal reflex can cause instant death.

Higher intraocular pressure can cause serious injury to dogs already suffering thin corneas, glaucoma, or eye injuries.

It has also been linked to hypothyroidism as the collar rests on the area of the thyroid gland causing damage.

It can impinge the nerves supplying the front legs leading to an abnormal sensation in the feet that can present as a dog that starts licking their feet. Often misdiagnosed as having allergies.

A dog's epidermis is only 3-5 cells thick, in humans it is at least 10-15 cells thick.

Excessive pressure can cause damage to the dog's eyes, larynx and thyroid gland.

Particularly risky for puppies under 6 months, a time during which the cartilage of the trachea is still delicate.

A dog that feels pain and discomfort on saying hello to another dog, or trying to sniff the environment, is in danger of associating other dogs or other stimuli in the environment with pain and discomfort resulting in a dog that we would label “reactive” and/or “aggressive” when on lead, “but ok when off lead”.

Hi Koda! He likes to stick with routine and get on grooming table on his own! He is a small breed doesn’t mean that they can’t get higher!

My table goes down to lower and with comfortable cushion steps, they can choose to go on their own 😊 Respect their choice 🙏💕

I met Indi in the middle of his adolescent stage. He was always anxious and we (his mom and I) respected his pace.

We were doing split grooming for several months. Some back and forth, but I really appreciate that his mom always accepted what he can take for the day and we never pushed him too far.

When we focused on 100% consent grooming/ handling, his progress was incredible and Boom!! He decided to let me clip his tip to toe in one visit 😭🙏💕

Do you think we took too long? Indi is just 2 and a half years old. Considering how many more grooming he has to go through in his life, it definitely worth time spending ❤️

It was such a speechless session and warmed my heart ❤️ As Kona has been through negative impact at her first grooming and adolescent stage sensitivity, she wasn’t comfortable being touch with certain pressure, body parts and time duration.

I and Kona’s wonderful owner have been practicing consent touch Kona’s body with chin rest.

Luckily, Kona’s mom taught her chin rest already so she was very comfortable doing it. We did only 3 sessions before this day.

Kona did touch up trim, brush and comb all over her body. She even didn’t try to snap even once and focused on mom (treat bucket) so well.

I just collapsed (tearing) and gave Kona hugs on the floor and Kona game me kisses 💕 I am very lucky to have clients who have great understanding and patience for Force Free/ Fear Free grooming. Thank you 🥲🙏💕

Say hello to Scottie!! He just turned 4 months old and learning & absorbing everything confidently!

His mom and I are so amazed how much he wants to learn each time and showing fast lane progress 💨

We are also aware that setbacks might occur when he enters adolescent stage at about 6 months old. Nothing to worry, we just keep adjusting during sensitive periods.

Can’t wait to see you more growing and groom happily 🛁✂︎ 🐶💕

June 29, 2021. I met Roobarb for the first time. He is a good boy but he stressed out from the car ride. I suggested to meet at his home instead. Boom! He could manage clipping very well 😊

But his toes and nails were always exceptional. But thankfully, Roobarb has very nice mom and dad (and sisters!) who understand his inner well-being is the most important.

Tried many approaches since then, Roobarb has been doing amazing with bucket game, consent grooming.

We always wanted to trim his nail so bad. We tried our best but resulted to push him farther. I’m sure his mom was disappointed some days but she kept hope and believing in Roobarb and me.

We started with front legs and all paws shaving today. He used to stresses out so much and couldn’t handle well. But we made sure gave him lots of short breaks. He remained calm throughout the session.

I targeted his nail with clipper next, I didn’t feel tension on his leg. But just did touching only as usual. Second paw, still no tension. Pretty good feeling. I asked, “ Can I try clipping?” His mom was so excited. Then, clipped. He surprised a bit but didn’t walk away and his mom immediately delivered high value treats.

We couldn’t believe that!!! We waited and allowed him to walk around and take time. I was gonna end the session but he came back on the table on his own. Ok, that gotta be ok to go again. Other side of paw, lift, and clipped.

Well done Roobarb😭💕😭💕😭💕😭💕😭💕😭💕😭💕 We gave him lots of lots of praise and finished the session as usual with cream cheese dental chew so that he can calm himself ☺️ I can’t be more proud of you Roobarb👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😭💕

We need to listen to what our dogs are telling us. Grooming in particular can be a challenge for many dogs, which can result in behaviours on the table that aren’t desirable, such as fidgeting, jumping and biting. When dogs are showing these behaviours, we need to address why; and no, they are not trying to ‘be the boss’.

Fear:
A dog can be scared of grooming for many reasons. This doesn’t mean that anybody has ever intentionally hurt the dog during grooming. However, the act of being restrained and unable to move away can be very distressing for some dogs, particularly when it is with a stranger. The different tools with their sights, smells and sounds can be really scary for some dogs, and if they are ‘flooded’ by these sounds, it can further cement their fear. Just like people, dogs will react to things differently from one-another. We are all individuals, and some of us need to take things slower than others.

Pain:
Whether it is chronic or acute, pain is a significant factor in dogs disliking grooming and being ‘difficult’. Pain may cause the dog to be uncomfortable with one area being touched, or it may be more generalised; a dog may just be entirely less tolerant if they are in discomfort, much like a person with a headache who now has a lot less patience than usual. If your dog is struggling with grooming, it may be worth having a thorough veterinary and physiotherapy examination. Remember: just because your dog isn’t yelping, limping or obviously in pain, that doesn’t mean they aren’t.

Discomfort:
Differejt from pain, discomfort may be the result of gastrointestinal issues, skin conditions or similar. Dogs with these conditions may not be obviously in pain or discomfort, but their irritation from the chronic condition may be enough to increase body sensitivity and make grooming an activity they wish to escape from, resulting in a lack of ‘compliance’ on the grooming table.

Confusion:
The dog may simply not understand what we want from them! This may come across as ‘defiance’, but really they may just not know that we want them to stand still, hold their head on this angle, turn around, give us their paw. Training the behaviours with positive reinforcement and putting cues to them will help clear up this communication barrier.

If your groomer says your dog is ‘difficult’, try to find out what that means (a description of when the behaviour happens, and what it looks like) and investigate what you can do to help your dog enjoy the groom more.

Thanks for reading!

NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS TRAINING!

🦴 🍖 Did you know that sometimes things are simple.
DOG OWNER: "my dog growls when he has a bone and I try to take it from him."
ME: "Oh, does he growl with anything else?"
DOG OWNER: "Um no."
ME: "Then stop trying to take a bone from him."

❌ 👶🏼 Sometimes we have to live with what we got, and stop trying to find a solution to fit our narrative.
DOG OWNER: "my dog hates babies that crawl."
ME: "Do you have a baby or is she around babies a lot?"
DOG OWNER: "No, but my sister has a baby and they visit often."
ME: "I'd set the dog up for success and not have her out when your nieces is visiting."

🤯 Sometimes dog "training" isn't actually training. It's just logical, common sense.
Not everything needs to be trained. Sometimes it's just us learning to respect the dog and do what actually works instead of trying to make the dog conform to our standards of what a "good dog" should do or not do.

🧐 🤔 We often have these narratives about what our dog should do or not do or how it should feel or not feel. That's setting a lot of people and situations up for failure.

💖 Let's flip that. Learn to read body language. Learn to know when to get your dog to a safe place. Learn to set your dog up to succeed and not be set up to do something you don't like.

👉🏼 Not everything needs training, sometimes it just needs better understanding.
