Having an accurate weight on your bird is a great way to keep track of their health! Using positive reinforcement, we can have our birds step on the scale voluntarily.
Check us out for more great tips!

We had a fantastic time speaking for the Friends of Greta's Roost Greta’s Roost Parrot Rescue Society

Our talk on Body Language is so much fun! Learning to see all the different ways your parrot communicates is essential to great communication. We fine-tuned our observation skills and gave more skills to some very skilled bird people.

If you couldn't make it, there is a recording on our site under 'reading bird body language '!

Robin will be in Lethbridge today speaking about body language!

Happy World Parrot Day!

Happy World Parrot Day!

From the Mexican tropical forests to the snowy peaks of New Zealand's alpine mountains, parrots captivate us with their stunning beauty and incredible diversity. They come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, and each with their own unique personalities. We love parrots for their vibrant presence and the joy they bring into our lives.

However, our beloved parrots face significant threats. One in three parrot species is at risk of extinction in the wild, and many suffer from improper care in homes. This is why the World Parrot Trust established in 2004 – to shine a spotlight on their plight and rally global support for their protection.

Today marks a special milestone as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of World Parrot Day. We invite you to stand with us, not just today, but every day, in our mission to protect these incredible birds, ensuring they thrive in the wild and in our homes.

Make a double impact this World Parrot Day! Thanks to a generous sponsor, every dollar you donate today will be matched up to $5,000 until end of day on May 31, doubling the difference we can make together.

Your support fuels our mission to:
🌱 Fight the wildlife trade
🏞️ Restore their natural habitats
🆘 Rescue and recover endangered species
📚 Educate the public and lead conservation efforts
❤️ Improve their health and well-being

By donating today, you're not just giving – you're becoming a vital part of a global effort to ensure these magnificent birds flourish for generations to come.

Join us in making a lasting impact.

😲🤷‍♀️ Is Dominance the Real Reason Parrots choose to perch on our shoulders? 🤷‍♀️😲

👇The Surprising Answer Revealed!👇

🌴In the wild, birds take comfort in perching high up in the trees. This behaviour offers them several advantages. Elevated perches provide a broad vantage point for spotting potential predators and prey, enhancing their safety. Additionally, being high up in the trees helps birds avoid ground-based dangers, offering a sense of security.

So it's no surprise that our captive parrots also seek safety in high places. Our shoulders and heads often become their preferred perches, as sometimes they can be the only elevated spots available in their environment. This behaviour mirrors their natural instincts to stay safe and secure by being up high, It has nothing to do with dominance! Instead, it reflects their innate need for security and comfort.🦜

❌Shoulder perching can become problematic if we're unable to get our birds to cooperatively hop off these areas, usually indicating an issue within their environment. This behaviour can be risky because interpreting their body language becomes challenging, especially if we are trying to force them off potentially leading to a bite if they become agitated.

In such cases, shoulder perching should be avoided. Instead, concentrating on training cooperative hop-off's using positive reinforcement can be helpful.✅

🪵Additionally, arranging the environment to allow your bird to perch up high, as they would naturally in the wild, can provide them with a sense of security and comfort.

When your bird feels secure and happy, trust and bonding will naturally follow.❤

Conference Recap 4!

The learning wasn't all about dogs, or cats, or even birds. We are also learners ourselves! The topic of DEI - Diversity, Equity, Inclusion - is very important. Some of the things we learn may be different than what we had previously thought, and that's ok. Learning can be uncomfortable, and that's ok. Learning to listen and "see the grey" is imporant.

This speaker was eloquent, compassionate, and inclusive. They brought forward scientific studies to help us all become better at integrating DEI and understanding the complexity of this advanced topic. It was fabulous!
