Happy Monday!!

We love this progression…
A long time patient of ours had a BAD uveitis flare near the start of spring. With loads of TLC, time, and the use of eye ointments and anti-inflammatories, we were able to get it to where it is today! While we aren’t perfect yet and never will be, the threat of losing the eye for now is gone, and this guy is significantly more comfortable. Swipe to see the most recent photos, taken just last week 👀

Eye cases can be tough, but when they turn out like this - they are so darn rewarding. 🙌🏼🩺

We cannot stress this enough - we have AMAZING clients!!

All of these boxes, and many more, are on their way to Ukraine. From sterile saline, to bandage materials, to coagulant powder, everything is being shipped to Ukraine to help those that desperately need it. And to believe all of it would have ended up in the dump if these ladies didn’t get in touch…
Dr. Watt was able to connect two motivated clients of ours that banded together and made these shipments happen. And they’re not done yet!!

With all of the scariness going on in Ukraine right now, it’s sometimes hard to continue on with our daily lives. We feel so honored to have been a part of this act, and have such incredible, selfless clients.

We’re a little late, but Happy New Year everyone!!

I’m going to start the New Year off with an interesting eye post. 👀
All horses have these little “clouds” along the upper - and sometimes lower - margins of their pupil. These are normal structures of the eye, however sometimes they can become quite large!

This horse was presented to us with the concern being his recent change in behavior, becoming very spooky and almost frightened with dark-light changes. After an exam of both eyes, Dr. Watt was able to conclude that when the pupil is constricted, these large corpora nigra actually block some of this guys vision! You can see how much of the pupil is blocked both in the right eye (1) and left eye (2). On bright sunny days, it would be quite difficult for this horse to see well.
To compare, a picture of normal/standard appearing copora nigra is shown in the third picture.
The treatment for this is ablation with a special laser; a relatively simple procedure that requires a hospital visit!

Have a close look at your horse’s eyes and see if you can spot these “clouds”!! 👁☁️

Just another reason why regular dental checkups are important - of course this isn’t seen too often, but the message stays the same! 🦷

It’s the perfect weather right now to float mouths!

Did you know that Dr. Watt has a special interest in Equine dentistry? Not only does he enjoy performing routine power floating, he also has loads of experience with tooth extractions and dental radiography.

Power floats take up the bulk of our schedule during the late summer and fall as the temperature is ideal for both the horse to be sedated in, and us to work in. Contact us today to get your horses float scheduled in before the cold weather hits! 🐴🦷

A nasty corneal ulcer that Dr. Watt was presented with last week! 😲👀

This gelding is VERY lucky - another mm or two would have punctured this globe, and the eye would no longer be salvageable. However, he’s not out of the woods yet!
Frequent applications of antibiotic eye ointments and daily administration of oral anti-inflammatories are required in order to help this ulcer heal.

Dr. Watt will be checking in on this eye often over the next few weeks to ensure proper healing is occurring. Eyes are no joke!! Luckily, this client acted fast and knew right away that a vet visit was needed. 👍🏻😄

We’re once again gearing up to run f***l egg counts! 😄🐴💩

Adult horses in Ontario typically only require deworming once yearly. Horses that are younger, or in their senior years, may require more than once-annual monitoring of their parasite burden by f***l egg counts and thus may need to be dewormed more frequently.

F***l egg counts are a cost-effective way of determining if your current deworming program is adequate. This simple test provides us with a lot of information, such as the number of parasites hiding out in your horse’s intestinal tract, the type of parasites present, what product may be most effective to use to deworm and whether or not they need to be dewormed at all. If your horse’s f***l egg count is below 200 eggs per gram of manure, there is no need to deworm this summer!

Even if you have dewormed recently, a f***l egg count can still be productive. If your horse’s egg count is high after deworming, then your deworming procedure may have been inadequate or the parasites present are resistant to the deworming product used.

If you have any questions, or would like to learn more, don’t hesitate to get in touch! If you would like a f***l egg count performed on your horse, Uxbridge Equine will set up a time to pick up a sample – free of charge. 👍🏻👍🏻

A flare up of Equine Asthma, also known as heaves, can definitely be disturbing to see as a horse owner!

This guy was having a nasty flare, and so was treated with a course of corticosteroids to calm his lungs down and allow him to breathe easier. Horses that suffer from Equine Asthma do best with 24/7 turnout (loads of fresh air), and no access to round bales. Environment is key in helping to keep these guys breathing their best. 🌲💨

Turn your sound on! These wheezing sounds, along with an increased effort to breathe, are both signs that your horse may be experiencing a flare up. Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you are ever suspicious that your horse may be dealing with asthma!

Routine dental exams are a massive part of making sure your horse is healthy and happy! 🦷🦷 During a recent dental exam, Dr. Watt found 2 loose cheek teeth (molars) near the back of this older gal’s mouth. Extraction was deemed necessary at that time, so an appointment a few weeks later was booked to perform the procedure.

Tech Katie ran some fluids with sedation through a catheter to keep her sedated through the extractions, and Dr. Watt placed a couple nerve blocks so she couldn’t feel the teeth coming out. Even though they were loose, we wanted to make sure she was comfortable so that Dr. Watt could get things done as efficiently as possible! Swipe to see the 2 teeth after removal. 👏🏻

Packing material was placed into the empty sockets where the teeth had been until the gum tissue heals, and a course of antibiotics was prescribed. We’ll be back in a few days to recheck the extraction sites and make sure all is healing as it should!

Strange mass Dr. Watt found during a routine float today! 🤔

A ligature was placed around the base of this mass before cutting it away (swipe to see the aftermath). The procedure was quite simple, and took less than 15 minutes to achieve.

No aftercare is necessary for this case as the sutures are absorbable and the leftover “stump” should smooth over in roughly a month!
PS - the blood along the upper molars is from loose caps, or baby teeth. 🦷

This aged gray gelding under went a minor surgery today to remove two Melanomas from the medial canthus of his eyes. 👁

Melanomas in horses behave quite differently than in people! Although cancerous, in horses they are often slow growing and typically don’t metastasize. They are quite common in gray horses and tend to appear around the eyes, mouth, re**um, tail and ge****ls.

In this guys case, these two Melanomas are in a not so ideal place, and over time would grow larger and cause further problems. So, they were excised before they got too big!

After some local and topical freezing, sedation, and a few stitches, these two tumors are history! 🙅🏻‍♀️🙅🏻‍♂️

This non-visual and painful eye was causing this mare lots of discomfort, even with oral and topical medications (check out our post on ERU from a while back!) Unfortunately, when we are no longer able to keep these cases comfortable with the eye in place, our only option is to remove the eye and relieve the horse of that constant headache!

Luckily, Dr. Watt can perform enucleations on farm with the horse standing! The process consists of some sedation, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, local anesthesia, and some surgical skills. The recovery time is brief and relatively low maintenance; often these horses are much happier with the eye removed and don’t require pain management post surgery.

Eyes are precious; don’t hesitate to get ahold of your vet ASAP if you notice something isn’t looking as it should! 👁🐴🩺
