🐴✨ Understanding Insulin Resistance in EMS Horses

Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) is characterized by insulin resistance—a condition where the body cannot effectively metabolize carbohydrates. Insulin, a hormone released by the pancreas, helps move glucose (sugar) from the bloodstream into muscle and fat cells for energy.

In horses with insulin resistance, their cells don’t respond properly to insulin, so glucose stays in the blood. In response, the pancreas releases more insulin, leading to hyperinsulinemia (elevated insulin levels).

This imbalance puts EMS horses at higher risk for obesity and laminitis, especially when fed high-starch or sugar-rich feeds or given access to lush pasture.

🐴✨ Understanding Endocrine Disorders in Horses

Endocrine disorders affect the hormonal balance in your horse’s body and can lead to significant health challenges. Two of the most common endocrine conditions in horses are Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) and Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID) (also known as Equine Cushing’s Disease).

🌾 EMS: Equine Metabolic Syndrome is an endocrine disorder that results in insulin resistance—where the body cannot efficiently transport sugar from the bloodstream into cells with insulin receptors. Horses with EMS are prone to obesity, regional fat deposits (like a cresty neck), and an increased risk of laminitis.

🧠 PPID: Common in senior horses, PPID occurs due to hormonal imbalances in the pituitary gland. Signs include a long, shaggy coat that doesn’t shed properly, muscle loss, increased thirst, and recurrent infections.

With early diagnosis and proper management, horses with endocrine disorders can live healthier, happier lives. Consult your veterinarian if you notice any changes in your horse’s health or behavior.

🐴🍼 Foaling Kit Essentials: Be Prepared for the Big Day!

Assembling your foaling kit is one of the most important steps to preparing for a smooth and safe delivery for your mare and foal. A well-stocked kit helps you handle routine care and be ready for any emergencies.

Key Items to Include:
🔹 Emergency plan and contact numbers
🔹 Flashlight or headlamp for nighttime foalings
🔹 Thermometer & stethoscope for monitoring vitals
🔹 Baby soap (unscented), paper towels, and tail wrap for cleaning the mare
🔹 Lubricant & gloves for assisting if needed
🔹 Towels for drying the foal
🔹 Umbilical tape and naval dip for umbilical care
🔹 Scissors for emergencies (like red bag delivery)
🔹 E***a in case foal is struggling to pass meconium
🔹 Trash bags to save the placenta for vet evaluation
🔹 Twine & palpation sleeves to keep placenta from dragging on the ground until it fully passes
🔹 Milking supplies to assist foals struggling to latch & suckle

Remember, no two foalings are the same, so having these essentials on hand can make all the difference. Be sure to review your foaling kit with your veterinarian to tailor it to your mare's needs.

Potomac Horse Fever (PHF) is caused by the bacteria Neorickettsia risticii and primarily affects horses grazing near rivers, creeks, or other water sources. 🐴🌊 The bacteria can be found in aquatic insects or water, with most cases reported seasonally between late spring and early fall. Regions like Ontario, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Kentucky, Illinois, and California are hotspots for PHF.

PHF is not contagious and cannot spread between horses or to humans, but infections often occur in clusters when horses share the same water source. Stay vigilant during peak seasons to protect your horse from this serious disease! 💡✨

This acid plays a vital role in breaking down food, aiding digestion, and protecting the body from harmful microorganisms. However, because stomach acid is produced continuously—even without food—horses that go several hours without forage are at higher risk of developing ulcers. 🐎💧

Drop your guesses in the comments below, and stay tuned to learn more about how a horse’s digestive system works and how you can support it! 🌿✨

A horse’s jaw is built for grinding, with a wider upper jaw and narrower lower jaw. 🦷🐴 This natural offset helps them chew but can lead to uneven tooth wear and dental issues over time. Regular dental care is key to keeping their teeth healthy and ensuring they can chew comfortably and efficiently. 🌾✨

🌬️ Older horses (20+ years) often struggle more with the cold, so they may need extra forage to keep warm and maintain their weight. Senior horses also benefit from a field shelter or blanket for added protection. 🧥🐴

If your older horse has trouble with long-stem forage, try offering soaked forage pellets/cubes as a partial or complete replacement. Soaking pellets can also help with hydration, and adding oil to the pellets can support weight gain if needed. 🌾💧

Hay alone contains minimal sodium, so it’s essential to supplement your horse’s diet with salt! 🧂 Horses need adequate sodium intake to support hydration, muscle function, and nerve signaling – all critical for their health and performance.

Make sure to add 1 -2 ounces of salt to their feed and always provide free-choice access to loose salt to help them meet their daily sodium needs. 🐴💧

🌾 Feeding forage is key to helping horses maintain body temperature during winter! ❄️ When horses digest forage, microbes in the hindgut produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs) for energy, which also generates heat as a natural by-product. This internal heat from fiber digestion helps keep horses warm in colder weather. 🔥🐴
Non-fiber carbohydrates (like sugars and starches) and fats don’t produce heat directly during digestion but still provide calories to support metabolic heat production. Ensuring your horse has access to quality forage is one of the best ways to promote a stable body temperature all winter long!
