We believe in the power of local food to create lasting change. Last season, we calculated that for every $1.00 paid to Sole Food farmers, there was a Social Return on Investment of $5.64—a testament to the transformative impact of your support. Beyond stable employment, we are providing opportunities to help individuals thrive in all aspects of their lives.

If you haven't had the chance to get involved yet—or if you are looking for another way to support us—here are two meaningful actions you can take:

🥕1. Donate before February 28th for a 2024 tax receipt
The CRA has extended the deadline for charitable donations for the 2024 tax year to February 28, 2025. Your generosity today will help us plant the seeds for a bountiful season ahead, while ensuring you receive your tax benefits on time!

✨A holiday must-read!✨Our incredible farm co-manager Kaum sat down with Montecristo Magazine to reflect on our 15th season of farming the city!

You'll also hear from our amazing partner, Chef Chris West of Medina Cafe, on the importance of supporting local food systems:

"You always pay for food one way or another—either through the exploitation of providers, your health, or your bank account. If you can, the third option is always the best."

At Sole Food, we are farmers who understand the power of working with soil, growing fresh food, and building community. This work changes lives every day—just ask Chainz!

Four years ago, Chainz joined our farm in search of purpose and connection. What he found was so much more. Today, he proudly shares:

✨“I’m happy at work and in my life. If I wasn’t here, I’d probably be sitting at home doing nothing. You get to work outdoors. It's good exercise and I've gotten really strong and healthy from doing this work. I’m 43 years old, but here I feel like I’m 20!”✨

Each day, Chainz dedicates himself to managing the farm’s compost, discovering how the act of nurturing living soil and nourishing others can be truly transformative. He takes great pride in his job and has grown into a leader on our team.

Donations make this work possible! Please consider giving the gift of good work this holiday season. There are many more individuals out there waiting for the opportunities Sole Food provides.

Join us next Tuesday (November 26th) from 11am - 3pm for our Second Annual Gleaning Day at Sole Food! 🥕🧄🫛🐞

Gleaning is the agricultural practice of community members gaining access to farmers' fields to collect leftover produce for personal use or donation. Come volunteer for an hour or two (no expectation to stay for the entire time) and take home some vegetables!

Here is the schedule:
🥾 11am - 2pm Field Work & Gleaning. (Help us clear beds, prune trees, w**d, etc)
🥕 2pm - 3pm Free Market. (Enjoy the fruits of the labour and take home the gleans. Crops could include kale, chard, daikon, turnip, etc)

Please wear waterproof boots and warm clothing! Space will be available to take breaks and chat with us about urban agriculture and food! 😋

DM us if you have any questions! See y'all there! 🫶🏾

Huge thank you to the lovely folks who came out last week and helped us with fall cover crop! Last week, we seeded many beds of cover crop with the help of some kind and generous volunteers! It went great, so we’re doing it again! Drop-in volunteer days are rare for us, but so special to see who from our neighbourhood and beyond makes the time to come out. We hope to see you all soon.

🧄Throughout this season, we’ve savoured garlic in all its forms—from delicate green shoots, to curly scapes, and fresh cloves. Now for the final act! Our cured garlic is ready for markets, to be shared with CSA members, and chefs.

Pictured here, preparing fresh garlic, is our processing supervisor Laura. Fun fact: Laura runs her own mighty micro-bakery which makes the most delicious cakes using local seasonal ingredients.

We turn parking lots into farms.

Sole Food transforms vacant urban land into street farms that grow artisan quality fruits and vegetables, available at farmer’s markets, local restaurants and retail outlets. We believe healthy food systems foster healthy communities and envision a future where good food is accessible, grown sustainably, where farms thrive in an urban setting, and where our community comes together to connect directly with their food and their neighbors.
