Big and Small Rescue Society

Big and Small Rescue Society We are a Vancouver-based registered non-profit society dedicated to re-homing dogs These dogs are sad, sick, often starving, and many are badly abused.

We rescue dogs locally, from Northern Canadian reservations and dogs about to be euthanized in high-kill shelters in California. These shelters destroy 87% of their intake or nearly 1000 loving dogs a month. We are not changing the world with our small rescue efforts, but to quote a popular saying in rescue, 'we are surely changing the world for that one dog'. We take these dogs in to foster homes

where they are lovingly restored to health. We find them kind and caring homes and make them the promise to love them forever. It's a labour of love; it's our small effort to live up to their incredible friendship. Although we appreciate the many caring foster and adoption applications for our dogs, it is our mandate to fit the family to the dog's needs, not vice versa. As such, not all applicants may be considered suitable for our rescue dogs.

Please share !! We need an emergency (temporary)foster for this beautiful, sweet and gentle girl called Betty. Just through to early January. Betty weighs 60 lbs. She has had two babies that are quite young. Betty knows her basic commands. We would love to see Betty in a home that can provide safety and care while she nurses her babies. She’s a good momma. FOSTER NEEDED - MEET TOMMY - TOMMY is an adorable terrier-pug x. He weighs only 15 lbs. HE is kennelled with other dogs and does really well. We think he is between 2-4 years old. He is easy to handle. Who can deny those EYES. LOVE. We would love TOMMY to find a warm lap for the Xmas holidays and someone to snuggle up to. He is not tested with kids or cats yet. Let's get this guy into a home for Christmas.

FOSTER FOUND - Thanks You - MEET MINNIE and her 8 week old baby. Minnie is a very sweet and friendly lady. We see some minion in her; maybe a spot of chihuahua too. She is 2-3 years old. and weighs just 14 lbs. Minnie has a minnie. Her baby is 8 weeks old and has her first set of puppy vaccines. Minnie and her baby are super sweet and loving. Is there anyone who would like to foster these 2 while we sort out a furever home for both of them?

FOSTER FOUND- Thank you - MEET TERRY- Terry is a 13 lbs 3year old Pekingnese boy. He is very sweet and kennelled with other dogs. He is doing fine. Terry may look a little uncertain in this photo, but who can blame him. He is apparently easy to handle. We would love to find Terry a foster home. We think he'd love a warm lap. Pekingese love walks and out door exploration, but little Terry will likely need a moment to chill out first. This is a very funny and comical breed mix. No small kids yet and not tested with cats.

PLEASE DONATE. We are here again asking for your help. HARRIS has been through so much. He is now needing endoscopy for embedded foxtails in his nasal passages - at $1700 (yah, we cannot believe it either). Harris has survived 2 bouts of hospitalization for pneumonia all because of these foxtails. We were not sure he'd pull through. The photos below show the condition he arrived in and how he looks today. We have to thank our AMAZING fosters for their constant and unwavering care.

ADOPTER NEEDED- MEET CARLSON - What a cute baby boy. Carlson is a 7 lbs terrier x. He is 12-14 weeks old. We see some Airedale in his colouring and whiskers crossed with a chihuahua? Carlson is a sweet and loving baby. He loves to explore and play. He is living with a cat and is doing well. He can be little shy when he first meets people but he warms up. He greets strangers with kisses and a wagging tail. He is not a big dog but he has long legs. We think he may settle around 15-25 lbs as an adult. We think he'd be perfect for someone seeking a smaller dog who can keep up on hikes and runs. He would fit into most lifestyles. Carlson is a lovely little boy who wants nothing more than to please his people. He is bright and a learner.

Wow, Ella has come a long way from the abandoned sweetheart found as a stray in a field hopping around. Funds have now been raised by our generous followers for some mobility wheels. ADOPTED BY WONDERFUL PEOPLE - Oh those eyes. Meet TARA. Tara is 12-14 week old border collie mixed maybe with a husky/chow/American Eskimo? Hard to say. This is a quiet girl. She is not a hyper at all. Tara weighs 17 lbs. She is such a smart girl. She is learning commands. She is happy to cuddle her people. She is doing well with other dogs. She has a very even temperament for a puppy of her age. We think Tara would fit into most households. We would love to see her live a happy life with lots of outdoor walks. She deserves someone who has time for her. We LOVE TARA.

ADOPTED BY WONDERFUL PEOPLE - MEET GWEN. Gwen is the white shepherd-husky mix at the front. This girl is PERFECTION. We can not recommend her enough. Gwen is 1 year old and weighs 50 lbs. She is slender because she loves to run and do zoomies outdoors. There was never a dog that Gwen did not love - big, small and everything in-between. She's great on a leash. She has super recall. Gwen is also a human social butterfly. She greets with soft kisses and gives a tail wag to all humans. She is uber friendly. She wants to be buddies with everyone. We think she'd be amazing in just about any household. We think - though she is not currently living with children - that she'd be great with children. She is not tested with cats yet. She really is a social angel who is just a happy soul. She has energy and would love to be able to stretch her long legs. We want to see Gwen in the best furever home ever.

FOSTER FOUND TY - MEET TULLOCH - Tulloch is an utter sweetheart. He is 1-2 years old, 33 lbs wire haired pony. We see Cairn or Norfolk Terrier in him with maybe a grandmother that was an English Bulldog. LOL! He cannot be beat for cuteness. He is a chunky little monkey. Tulloch LOVEs people. He is very gentle and sweet. He wants to feel secure as he just lost his brother (in foster care as well) and spent time at a kill shelter. We would love someone who has time for him; someone who can take him on neighbourly walks and give him the big hugs he so wants and deserves. He is not tested YET with kids or cats. He is a pretty gentle soul.

FOSTED BY WONDERFUL PEOPLE - MEET POPPY. This angel os a puppy is jusy 8 months old She weighs 9 lbs. She is a wizard-in-the-making with those cute eyebrows. We see terrier but she is very fine b***d so maybe some chihuahua too? Poppy is a sweet and gentle girl. She wriggles and dances with joy. She LOVES her person. She is a lap sitter. She will snuggle under the duvet at night to find warmth and security. She gets along with other dogs and is very respectful of the senior dog in the home. She is respectful of the resident cats too; and gives no chase. If you want someone who will adore you and follow you around, then Poppy may be your girl. She would be fine with kids as long as they are respectful. This is a lovely puppy.

ADOPTED BY WONDERFUL PEOPLE - MEET WINTER - What a beautiful baby girl. This husky-shepherd with stunning blue eyes is 14 weeks old. She has all the prettiness of a Siberian Husky but the smarts and patience of Shepherd. Winter loves to listen and learn. She has energy, but what puppy doesn't? She settles down. and sleeps well. Winter is great with children. She is not excessive with young kids. She is affectionate. She adores other dogs and listens to boundaries. She would love a soft bed to land on and someone who has time for her. She is going to make an excellent adult dog. This baby girl will love hikes, run and walks in our beautiful British Columbia. She is not yet tested with cats but as she is a baby she can be integrated into most households.

URGENT SHORT-TERM FOSTER NEEDED SAT NOV 2- MON NOV 4 - MEET GWEN. Did you know the name Gwen is the Celtic language means white and holy!!! That just about describe our beautiful pale shepherd mix. Gwen is 1 year old and weighs 53 lbs. She is spayed. Gwen is a Staff Favourite at the shelter She has been at the shelter for over 108 days. Good Grief. Sniff. She is truly the sweetest dog ever. She is great with other dogs, has been to play group multiple times and has had multiple kennel mates. She is very social with staff and walks well on a leash. You can see in the video below that she loves to cuddle and allows pets all over her body! She does well with children (staff had her out on a leash walking around the shelter to meet and greet people and she had multiple kiddos come up to her). She truly is a wonderful dog! She is not tested yet with cats and has not yet been assessed living with children. Is there anyone who can wrap their arms around this deserving girl and give her the love she deserves? She'd love a long walk or a hike.

FOSTER NEEDED- MEET ELLA - We have a special case of a Maltese girl who weighs only 8 lbs and is just 1 year old. She was at high of euthanization because of her disability. Ella has a deformed foot - that causes her absolutely no pain. She manages to move around OK. She can walk on her hind legs kinda like a bunny and she shuffles around as a three legged dog, as well. How could we not help her? Now, we need someone who has LOVE and PATIENCE in their heart to look after this friendly and sweet girl while we find her a happy furever-after. She's not yet tested with kids and cats. We don't see a bad bone in the little girl.
