🌞 Summer Safety Tips for Your Furry Friends! 🐾
As temperatures rise, it’s crucial to keep our pets safe and comfortable. Here are some tips for enjoying the summer with your dogs:
🌡️ Safe Temperatures: Walk your dogs when it’s cooler, ideally when temperatures are between 20°C to 24°C. This means early in the morning, or later in the evening once the sun is going down.
🐕 Size & Age Matter: Remember, puppies, large breeds, and senior dogs may be more sensitive to heat. Adjust your walking times accordingly.
🐶 Special Care for Snub-Nosed Dogs: Breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Shih Tzus need cooler environments due to their breathing difficulties. It’s safer to keep them indoors during extreme heat.
🔥 Test the Ground: If you can’t comfortably hold your bare foot or palm on the pavement for at least 10 seconds, it’s too hot for your pup’s paws! Even if your pup isn’t showing discomfort, there is still a possibility that they could experience scorching on their paw pads.
💧 Hydration is Key: Always have fresh water accessible to your dogs to prevent dehydration.
🏠 When to Stay Home: While we love having our dogs join our outdoor adventures, extreme heat can be a life-and-death situation. Sometimes, it’s safer to leave them at home.
🚨 Recognizing Heat Stroke: Be alert for signs like excessive panting, drooling, reddened gums, vomiting, or an unsteady stance. If you suspect heat stroke, it’s crucial to cool your dog down immediately with water and get them to a vet as soon as possible.

🐾 Meet Riley!
🌟 Our adorable patient from Kingsway Veterinary Clinic who’s teaching us the importance of pre-anesthetic blood work. 💉
🔬 Riley, the beloved dog of our vet assistant Trina, was scheduled for a routine dental cleaning. As part of our standard procedure, we conducted a general blood panel to ensure his organs were functioning properly before going under anesthesia.
Surprisingly, we discovered elevated GGT levels in his liver.
🥘 Following this, a Bile Acids test was performed before and after a meal, revealing significantly high levels post-meal, which suggested a deeper issue with Riley’s liver function.
To address this, Riley is now on a 30-day treatment plan with Ursodiol, with plans to retest and assess improvements.
🐶 Remarkably, Riley showed no clinical signs of illness, which highlights why we at Kingsway recommend routine blood work. It allows us to catch potential health issues early, ensuring the safety and well-being of your furry family members during procedures.
👩⚕️💙 Stay tuned for updates on Riley’s journey and remember, preventive care is key to a happy, healthy pet life!

🌩️🎆 As summer rolls in, so do the loud booms of thunderstorms and fireworks! While we may enjoy the spectacle, our furry friends might not feel the same way. 🐶💔
Understanding Their Fear:
Dogs naturally fear loud noises, a survival instinct that alerts them to danger. But for some, this fear can turn into a phobia, particularly with the noisy celebrations of summer. Thunder, fireworks, and even changes in barometric pressure can provoke severe anxiety in sensitive dogs.
Creating Comfort:
🏠 Safe Space: Identify a quiet, inner room where your dog can feel secure. Use white noise or soft music to help mask the sounds of thunder and fireworks, and make sure they have their favorite blanket or toy.
🤗 Provide Comfort: Consider a weighted vest or anti-anxiety wrap for extra security. Remember, staying calm and composed helps your dog manage their stress better.
🎮 Distract: Engage them with puzzle toys or treat-filled toys to keep their mind off the noises.
Professional Help:
If your dog’s anxiety worsens, it might be time to consult with our veterinary team or a specialized behaviorist who can offer a tailored plan or medication to help.
Let’s not let the summer booms spoil the fun for our canine companions. With preparation and patience, we can help them navigate this noisy season. 🌟

🐾 Special Patient of the Week: Truffle! 🐾
This week, we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming our special girl, Truffle, into the clinic🐶✨
Truffle is RVT Caroline’s little bundle of joy. Caroline, who is one of our amazing registered veterinary technicians, brought her in for a full dental cleaning. 🦷💖
Truffle was such a brave and wonderful patient, charming everyone with her sweet nature and wagging tail. Seeing her leave with a healthy, clean mouth was the highlight of our week. 🥰
Regular dental cleanings are essential for our furry friends to maintain good health, and Truffle’s visit was a perfect reminder of how important it is to care for our pets’ oral hygiene. Healthy teeth and gums are crucial for preventing serious health issues
and ensuring our pets stay happy and active. 🪥🐕
Thank you, Caroline, for being the best RVT and dog mom. We’re so glad we could contribute to her overall health and well-being! 🌟🐾

🚨 Attention Dog Owners! 🚨
Travelling with your dog across borders just got a bit trickier. 🐾✈️
Last week, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released updated requirements for bringing dogs into the US. These new rules apply to any dogs entering the US – including those returning after traveling – and will take effect August 1, 2024.
Why are new requirements needed?
The updated regulations aim to better protect people and animals from the potential importation of the canine strain of rabies – a nearly always fatal disease. Although eradicated in the US in 2007, there’s still a risk of its return through imported dogs.
•Rabies causes an estimated 59,000 deaths globally each year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
These tighter requirements enable safer importation of dogs from high-risk countries – a practice banned in the US since 2021.
What do I need to know?
All dogs entering the US must:
•Be over six months of age
•Be microchipped
•Appear healthy
•A CDC Dog Import form must be completed and submitted 2-10 days before entry.
•Additional forms may be required depending on the country of origin and must be filled out by veterinarians, including government veterinarians.
Travel Takeaway;
Planning to cross the US border with your dog? Start planning early! The process is more complex than before. Visit the CDC website for helpful travel checklists and a “dogbot” guide.

Avoid avocados, citrus, currants, rhubarb, mushrooms, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, chives, shallots, and leeks.
✨ Always wash and prepare them properly by removing inedible parts and cooking when necessary. Remember these are treats and should not be added as a supplement to your dog’s complete and balanced diet. 🌍✨Happy Earth Day, friends and pet lovers! ✨🌍
Today at Kingsway Veterinary Clinic, we’re not just celebrating our beautiful planet; we’re also reminding everyone that caring for Earth includes giving our furry, feathered, and scaled friends the love and attention they deserve. 🐶🐱🐠
Why? Because every paw print and fin wave is a part of this world, too! Here are some fun ways you can celebrate Earth Day with your pets:
Eco-Friendly Walks - Take your dog on a nature walk but remember to leave no trace behind. Biodegradable bags are a great start! 🌿🐾
Sustainable Toys and Treats - Choose toys made from recycled materials and treats that are organic and eco-friendly. Your pets will love them, and so will our planet! 🎾🍪
Plant a Tree - Or even better, plant a pet-safe plant! It’s good for the air and gives your pets something new to sniff. Just make sure it’s non-toxic for them. 🌳🌺
Adopt-a-Pet - If you’re considering adding a new member to your family, adopt from a local shelter. You’ll be giving a pet a second chance and helping reduce the environmental impact. 🏠💖
Let’s make every day Earth Day for us and our pets. After all, they’re not just animals; they’re family. 🌎❤️

Ginger Cat Appreciation with Kingsway Veterinary Clinic! 🐾🧡
Did you know that the beautiful orange hue of ginger cats comes from a special gene that makes them stand out in the feline world? These vibrant creatures, with their marmalade to apricot coats, are not only a feast for the eyes but also carry unique traits that make them extra special.
🔸Ginger Power: Around 80% of ginger cats are male due to the way the orange gene is inherited. But those adorable freckles that start appearing around two years of age? They know no gender, adding charm to any ginger, tortoiseshell, or calico cat!
🔸Velcro Cats:Gingers are often seen as more affectionate, earning them the nickname ‘Velcro cats’. They love to share cuddles, headbutts, and even kisses, showcasing their friendly nature.
🔸The Tortitude Myth:
While some female ginger cats might seem more reserved or selective in their human interactions, it’s essential to remember that every cat’s personality is unique. Love, patience, and understanding go a long way.
🔸Love and Freckles:Keep an eye on those charming freckles and consult your vet for any changes. It’s all about keeping your ginger pal healthy.
➡️ Remember, a cat’s coat color might be fascinating, but it’s their health, environment, and the love they receive that truly shapes their well-being and personality.
🧡Let’s appreciate our ginger friends not just today, but every day! Share your ginger cat photos with us using the hashtags #GingerCat #KingswayVets #GingerCatAppreciation #VelcroCats #FelineFriends 🐱💕
🌸Protect Your Pets from Lyme Disease🌼
As we embrace the vibrant colors and warmth of spring, it’s essential to remember that our adventures outdoors can bring risks, particularly from ticks and Lyme disease. Lyme disease, transmitted by the tiny but mighty ticks, especially the Blacklegged (Deer) tick in North America, is caused by the Borrelia bacteria. With at least 14 types of Borrelia causing Lyme disease worldwide, it’s a global concern for our furry friends.
Ticks, in their nymph and adult stages, are experts at staying unnoticed. They’re tiny—nymphs are as small as a poppy seed—making it all too easy for them and the diseases they carry to go undetected. This is particularly concerning as Lyme disease can present vague symptoms in pets, such as lethargy, shifting leg lameness, fever, and loss of appetite. These signs can be easily mistaken for other ailments, underlining the importance of regular Lyme disease testing.
Prevention is Key:
Tick Control: Implement a robust tick control program, particularly if you live in or visit Lyme disease hotspots.
Avoid Tick Habitats: Be cautious around tall grass, woods, and meadows, especially during warmer months.
Regular Checks: Thoroughly check your pet for ticks after outdoor adventures.
Vaccination: Discuss the possibility of a Lyme disease vaccine with your veterinarian.
Safety Tips for Pet Owners:
Protect yourself in tick-infested areas by using tick repellents with DEET, wearing clothes treated with permethrin* (note: permethrin is toxic to cats), and performing thorough checks on yourself and your pets after being outdoors.
By taking these preventive measures, you can ensure that you and your pets enjoy the beautiful spring and summer months safely and happily. Always consult with your veterinarian for the best advice tailored to your pet’s needs.
