Meet Merlin, a handsome ginger Maine C**n cat with the sweetest personality. He spent over a week with us due to urinary issues. Initially, he was brought in for lethargy, leaking urine, and diarrhea. During his examination, the doctor discovered that his bladder was large and firm, which is an emergency situation, especially common in male cats. This condition is known as FLUTD (feline lower urinary tract disease), and it typically presents with frequent trips to the litterbox, straining to urinate, urinating in small amounts, and sometimes blood in the urine.

We successfully unblocked him under sedation, and he was hospitalized with an indwelling urinary catheter to help him urinate regularly. After 48 hours, the catheter was removed, but Merlin still wasn’t urinating properly. An abdominal ultrasound revealed a mucus plug in his bladder, which we were able to express under sedation. Although a good urine stream was produced while sedated, Merlin still couldn’t urinate on his own afterward, so another catheter was placed to relieve his bladder and discomfort.

Given the ongoing issues, we recommended a perineal urethrostomy (PU surgery), which creates a new urinary opening, shortening the urethra and allowing urine to bypass the obstructed area. After the surgery, Merlin was able to go home and is doing great! We miss him here—he was such a good boy at the hospital—but we’re so happy to see him recovering well at home.

When your dog's dental health is neglected, there's a significant risk of developing gum disease, which can progress to periodontal disease. If bacteremia occurs, bacteria from the infected gums can enter the bloodstream and spread to other organs, including the heart. Over time, this can damage the heart's structure and function, potentially leading to heart disease. Maintaining your dog's dental health and other health efforts is a vital step in protecting your dog's heart health. Contact us at (604) 738-5683 to evaluate your dog's dental health!

Meet adorable Rosie, a grey and white kitty with a shy personality. She came in due to alopecia (hair loss) around her back and was given Revolution to help rule out any potential mite or flea allergies. Additionally, she was sent home with topical Essential 6 to improve her skin barrier. Her mom also mentioned that Rosie loves being called “beautiful” — because, who wouldn’t?

With the busy pace of life, our dogs can't always be with us. We often have to leave them at home and return to them later. As a result, some pets may develop separation anxiety. Fortunately, there are effective ways to help them overcome this. You can train them to understand that you'll be back soon and that there's no need to worry. Techniques like counter-conditioning, gradual desensitization, increasing physical stimulation, and creating a safe space can help. If you need more guidance, please call us at (604) 738-5683.

Different breeds of cats mature at slightly different rates. Depending on your kitten's breed, it might take them somewhat longer to mature. Maine C**ns, for example, aren't considered mature until about 3 or 4 years old. Some cats never even really outgrow their kitten phase! Looking for more fun facts about your cat? Follow us for more. Oftentimes, we see our cute cats twirling, but what does it mean? It can signify several things. They could be being playful, following a hunting instinct, showing excitement, or, in rare cases, it could indicate a medical issue or be caused by disorientation. However, in most cases, this is normal behavior. Always remember to monitor your cat's behavior to ensure they're in tip-top shape and not in distress.
