New in Store: Cat Shark Jaws 🦈

Cat sharks are small, shy sharks found in oceans all over the world. They get their name from their cat-like eyes and smooth, graceful movements. These nocturnal hunters spend their nights searching for food like crustaceans or small fish and their days hiding in coral reefs or rocky crevices.

✨ Fun Cat Shark Facts ✨
- Most cat sharks are small, growing less than 3 feet long.
- Some lay eggs called “mermaid’s purses” that wash up on beaches.
- A few species, like the chain cat shark actually glow in the dark!

We love these unique creatures and their jaws are one of our favorite marine treasures to display! You can find cat shark jaws in our store, perfect for collectors or ocean enthusiasts.

Custom Jackalope Mount 🖤

Dating back to American tall tales, the Jackalope is a mythical hybrid of a jackrabbit and antelope. While these creatures are purely fictional, creating a Jackalope through taxidermy brings the legend to life.

In Jackalope taxidermy, rabbit mounts are adorned with carefully placed antlers, resulting in a whimsical and curiously lifelike display. Whether you’re a collector or simply love unusual decor, a Jackalope adds a touch of magic to any space 🖤

Blue Morpho Butterfly (Morpho menelaus) 🦋

One of nature’s most dazzling creations, the blue morpho butterfly is instantly recognizable by its vivid iridescent wings. Found in the rainforests of Central and South America. These beauties can have a wingspan of up to 8 inches, making them one of the largest butterflies in the world!

Fun fact: That shimmering blue color isn’t due to pigment but to the microscopic structures on their wings, which reflect light in a magical way. When closed, their brown camouflaged underside makes them nearly invisible to predators.

New in Store: Trilobites ✨

These fascinating marine creatures thrived in ancient oceans long before dinosaurs existed, living for around 270 million years. With their segmented bodies, hard exoskeletons and compound eyes, trilobites are some of the most beautifully preserved fossils in the world.

Fun facts about trilobites:
• They’re one of the first animals known to have vision, with eyes made of calcite!
• There are over 20,000 species, varying from a few millimeters to over two feet in length.
• Trilobites molted their shells as they grew, much like modern arthropods.

This gorgeous piece is available in store and online 🖤

We will be closed until January 6th ✨

Meet the Giant Golden Orb-Weaver🕸️

These stunning spiders get their name from the golden color of their silk, which glistens like sunshine. Native to warm regions across the globe, golden orb-weavers are known for building massive webs, sometimes spanning over a meter across! Their webs are so strong that they can even catch small birds and bats (don’t worry, they mostly stick to insects)!

🕷️ Fun Facts:
• Female orb-weavers can grow up to 3 inches, making them among the largest spiders in the world, while males stay tiny in comparison.
• Their webs are crafted with such strong silk that it’s been used by scientists as a model for synthetic materials.
• They rarely pose a threat to humans! They’re pretty gentle actually and prefer to be left alone to tend to their webs.

These golden beauties are not only impressive architects but also play a vital role in controlling insect populations. So next time you see one, take a moment to admire their artistry from a safe distance! 🖤

Moths may seem harmless, but they can be a serious threat to your cherished taxidermy. Clothes moths (like the webbing clothes moth Tineola bisselliella) are particularly notorious for laying eggs on organic materials. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae feed on fur, feathers and hide, causing devastating damage like bare patches, holes or in some cases complete disintegration.

To protect your pieces, consider using cedar sachets or balls near your taxidermy. Cedar contains natural oils that repel moths and other insects, making it an effective and eco-friendly deterrent. Place them in display cabinets, near mounts or in storage spaces to keep your taxidermy safe.

✨ Pro Tip: While cedar is excellent for prevention, it’s essential to regularly inspect your taxidermy for signs of infestation. Look for dander around your taxidermy, fine webbing and small holes. Keep your collection in a cool, dry environment, as humidity can also attract pests. If moth activity is found, place your piece in the freezer for 3-4 days to eliminate the pests.

Do you use cedar or another method to protect your mounts? Let us know in the comments!
