Trimming can be done with nail trimmer, a nail grinder or combination of both.
If your dog has light-colored nails, you should be able to see the kwik within the nail. Your goal is to cut approximately 2-3 mm away from the kwik, to avoid cutting the kwik. If your dog has dark nails, you may not be able to see the kwik. In this case, trim just the very tip off of the nail, bit by bit, until you see the kwik. Through a series of small clips, removing 1-2 mm of nail with each clip, you can gradually work the nail back to a shorter length while minimizing the likelihood of damaging the kwik. Aim to make your final cut at or near the point where the nail begins to curve, but stop sooner if you encounter the kwik. In some dogs, especially those who have not received regular nail trims, the kwik may be grown out almost to the end of the nail. In this case, follow the instructions in our previous nail post for an overgrown kwik.
Filing the nail with the grinder at the end will leave the end of your dogโs nail smoother, minimizing, but not eliminating sharp edges. There is also less risk of damaging your dogโs kwik with this method. Additionally, some dogs that have an aversion to clipping are more tolerant of nail grinding.
If your dog has dewclaws (smaller nails on the middle side of the paw), do not forget to trim them! Dewclaws do not come in contact with the ground; therefore, they often become overgrown and can even curve around until they are growing into the paw pad!!
Nail trimming & grinding is included in our Full-Deluxe Groom and the Bath & Tidy packages, but you can book a nail trim appointment in between your dogโs grooms.
You can always ask us if you have further questions and we will be happy to help! ๐พ
