🐾🎓 Recent Pet To Pal grads:

1. “Yogi” the French bulldog is doing awesome. He’s a well mannered pup that’s learning how to play with his humans nicely. He’s working on his patience and impulse control, as well as his basic commands. He’s not a great walker yet so that’s something we will be doing at a coming lesson

2. “Cayde” is 2 years old & “Ollie” is 4 years old and they are both cockapoos. They have separation anxiety, so we’re reintroducing crate training for them. We’re also giving them more structure around the house, and clear expectations on their walks to limit their reactions to other dogs & distractions. They’ve made some progress, but we still have a little ways to go with them

3. “Lucy” the mini bernedoodle puppy has done training with others before. She is such a happy go-lucky girl that just needs a clear way to harness and her focus her energy. We’re improving on her “place” , we’re improving our walking, and she’s also currently in our “Concentration & Confidence” puppy group class where she did great at her first class!

Recent Pet To Pal grads 🎓🐾 :

1. “Jack” and his new younger brother “Ronnie” the lab . Labs are notoriously very food motivated (which typically makes training a lot easier 😅)
When we bring in a new puppy, a lot of times this is also to re-establish (or establish for the first time) rules & boundaries and structure , even for the older dog. And through social learning you can also use the dog that is having success with the training to kickstart the behaviour in the other one! Monkey see monkey do 😉 These guys are both sweet boys and I’m looking forward to continue working with them

2. “Jax” the toy poodle is 3 years old. He’s fairly reactive on walks, to the front door, etc. We worked on some front door manners, impulse control, desensitization to dogs & loose leash walking + engagement. He needs a bit more work but will be transitioning to a group class

3. “Violet” the mini bernedoodle puppy from Swiss ridge kennels is off to a great start. She can be a bit nippy, but as soon as activate her brain and give her thighs to do / think about, majority of that behaviour dissipates. She’s starting to work on having more structure around the house, and she’s started with a dog walker as well. Her family is doing a good job with her

🎓 Recent Pet To Pal grads 🎓

1. “Millie” the cocker spaniel is such a sweet pup. She’s working thorough separation anxiety. As much as I know crate training can be a very difficult and frustrating process, it’s crucial to help our pup learn to self-regulate and be able to calm themselves down. We started with some of her basic obedience as well and intro to leash walking

2. “Bentley” the Maltipoo puppy is 4 months old. He’s already getting pretty good with his recall and some of his basic cues. At our previous session we started teaching him door manners as well, since he’s getting better with his potty training he’s starting to earn more space around the house. And since he has access to the front door area, it was important for us to start giving him structure with what to do when someone comes to the door

3. “Milo” is a 6 year old Jindo / spitz mix. Milo has has a lot of different living environments and situation. He was in a rescue for a well and just recently came to his new family. Milo has reactivity issues. We changed his equipment, starting practicing neutrality, desensitization and impulse control. He has a ways to to, but he will part of an upcoming group class which will help him as well 🐾

Recent Pet To Pal grads 🎓:

1. “Oban” - named after a type of scotch - Oban gets VERY distracted when he sees dogs on a walk. We worked on engagement, we changed his equipment to help communicate with him more clearly, we worked on leash walking, and he joined our puppy group class which helped him a lot as well. He learned to be around other dogs without getting over stimulated. He learned to be in “work mode” and concentrate on his owner when there are distractions around. Oban is a big sweet boy and his humans were great to work with

2. “Coraline” & “Clementine” are lab / boxer / ridgeback puppies. They live backing onto a school and they love to run the fence line & bark at people / distractions. They also have very high prey drive. They were nervous at our first lesson, but they warmed up really nicely! We worked on recall, impulse control, and some other important fundamentals

3. “Arlo” the goldendoodle puppy is working on thresholds, loose leash walking, front door manners, and relationship building with his owner 🐾

🎓 Recent Pet To Pal grads:

1. “Storm” is a Australian shepherd. He’s a very smart dog and generally well behaved. Storms’ backyard backs onto a golf course, and everytime the golf carts come zooming past his yard he lunges & barks, he’s trying to herd them, as per his breed. We worked on impulse control, we worked with getting him more comfortable with other things zooming by - skateboard, scooter, etc. The more we can build reward history & muscle memory of being calm while things fly by, the easier it will be for him to generalize this behaviour towards the golf carts 🐾

2. “Rocket” is a Korean Jindo mix. Rocket is a rescue. He’s very nervous & fearful. He’s also reactive on walks towards other dogs. We worked on building his confidence a bit, we practiced some walk-by’s with Xena, we worked on engagement, etc. Rocket is not very good motivated so we had to find something else to incentive him. He has made some decent progress, but truthfully he’s not quite there yet. We’lI need a few more sessions + possibly a group class with him 🐾

3. “Athena” is a 6 month silver lab . Athena had a jaw issue early on that caused her to not be able to play with any chew toys or have any bones etc. This has led her to never truly learn bite inhibition. So now we’re trying to teach her how to use her mouth appropriately. She’s also working on her walking skills, basic obedience, and being trustworthy around the house 🐾

Lately, at Pet To Pal:

1. “Zues & Rocky” are husky / lab mixes. Zeus is almost 2 years old, and him and Rocky are two peas in a pod. They are big strong dogs and heavy pullers. They are also extremely nervous and fearful, so everyday things in their environment put them over threshold. Something like a person walking by, or a guest coming over, or seeing another dog / distraction on a walk. They also have littermate syndrome with each other. Even though they aren’t littermates, this can happen with dogs that bond more closely to each other than to their humans, which forces them to look to each other for guidance instead of their owners. It took 3 lessons just for them to be comfortable enough to work with me. We made some progress, but their family is in the middle of a relationship reboot to help build their confidence and their leadership to help their dogs better handle the world and all the stuff that’s in it 🐾

2. “Phoebe” the Schnoodle is a rescue. She was struggling with her crate when I first got there, but within the first session we got her loving it! Since then we’ve been working on relationship building, housetraining, basic obedience, and boundaries around the house. She is such a good learner! And her family has been a pleasure to work with as well, putting in the work and asking good questions 🐾

3. “Zoey” the Havanese puppy is working on her housetraining, nipping, and a lot of common puppy behaviours. She was doing very well with her basic obedience and implementing structure in her environment. I will be following up with her again very shortly 🐾

Lately, at Pet To Pal:

1. “Rocco” the American bulldog is almost a year old and is working towards his CGC/CGN certification. Rocco had an incident where he got startled and reacted, so we’re working on his confidence building and Desensitization so that he doesn’t get startled so easily so he can avoid getting into fight or flight mode 🐾

2. “Teddy” the cockapoo is working on his basic obedience, relationship building, lifestyle training around his house, and will be joining an upcoming puppy group class. He’s working through a slight stomach issue so we’ve pushed pause on our lessons but we will be continuing again very soon once we’re in the clear for his stomach 🐾

3. “Stella” the Yorkie is about 6 years old. Stella is little cutie. She can be a bit demanding so we worked on giving her structure, having her learn to ask nicely for things, etc. She also has a bit of resource guarding so her owners are working to rebuild their relationship with her. This behaviour also manifests on walks when she’s on leash and gets territorial about her owner. We will be doing another few sessions so her owners have all the info they need to curb these issues 🐾

Lately, at Pet To Pal:

1. “Ruby” the Cavapoo was super nervous and fearful. This affected her humans quality of walks, not wanting to go or do things. We worked on her confidence building, basic obedience, giving her more structure in her day to day life, as well as relationship building for her owners & her. Ruby also participated in our puppy group class and did great! She’s making awesome progress

2. “Levi” the Maltipoo puppy is working on his basic obedience and his housetraining. We had to take a step back and limit his space, because he had too much house access and free roaming ability. The biggest mistake people make with their new puppy is giving too much freedom too quickly. Levi is working on is obedience cues and is also learning what is allowed / not allowed in the house

3. “Rylo” the cockapoo puppy is working on his manners and etiquette around the house. We’re giving him more structure and helping him learn to be calm and respectful. Rylo lives with another dog in the house who doesn’t want to interact and play the way he does so him developing appropriate social skills is important

“Leo” the havapoo is working on rebuilding his relationship with his family because he was demonstrating some resource guarding. Many dogs (not just dogs with resource guarding) would benefit from having a leash on around the house on while in the training process. Now; before we do that it’s important to build a positive association to the leash. If you’re only putting the leash on when your dog is in trouble or doing something wrong, eventually they will pick up on that and start to run away from the leash when they see it and / or shut down as soon as it’s put on.

“Ollie” the mini Goldendoodle is making good progress. When I got to his house he was super rambunctious, p*eing on p*e pads / all over the house, didn’t know how to sit / down, or any structure or cues. He’s now going outside to the balcony to p*e. As his owners start limiting his space / using the crate more his accidents will fully go away, but for now they’ve made a lot of progress. He now knows how to sit; down; but more importantly he’s starting to learn how to settle and be calm to earn things. We worked on impulse control, asking permission, leave it, etc. He’s doing well but he’s still a little ways away from being a finished product

“Bailey” the shihtzhu puppy is working on neutrality. He gets very riled up, bordering on reactive when he sees dogs. The more we teach our dogs that the things they thought were a big deal actually don’t matter that much to them, the less we’ll have those reactions from them

“Charlie” the Maltipoo is doing great with almost all of her training, but her accidents are still a work in progress. Charlie and family is going to be moving in with family for a bit while they’re house is being sold. In training, any change of routine / schedule / environment can cause a regression. It’s important to try and maintain as many consistent variables as possible when making changes with our pups

“Priscilla” is a 7 month old Morkie puppy. She’s a bit on the nervous side but she warmed up really quickly. We worked on giving her more structure, some basic obedience, crate training, and recall. She’s a cutie and she gets so excited for her training sessions

“Luna” the poodle puppy is rambunctious and energetic, but she’s also an eager learner. Giving our small dogs jobs & stimulation is just as important as for big dogs. Her family is working with her so they feel more confident in how to handle her in any situation

“Maggie” the rescue is most likely a boxer / shepherd mix. Maggie was super nervous of me at our first session. She growled, had her hackles up, and was generally unsure. As we worked together, we became buddies and she started to love seeing me! She was giving me kisses, receptive to new lessons as well as some light corrections when necessary. (For most dogs) but especially dogs that are more on the nervous side or fearful, I don’t really use corrections at the first lesson (unless absolutely necessary) . A dog is not going to receptive to what the correction is supposed to be telling them if they haven’t learned to trust me yet. I find it’s always important to build that bond as much as possible, then when the dog knows me and likes me and trust me, it’s in a better headspace to receive information from me - positive or negative. Maggie’s HuMom was a true pleasure to work with! Practiced the homework, asked good questions, and had a great attitude! Keep up the great work! 💪🏼 😊

“Theo” the cockapoo has a lot of FOMO , and that leads to demanding behaviour - pulling, barking, whining, jumping, etc. We first worked on crate training and getting him more comfortable and able to regulate his emotions and calm himself down. We did some walking exercises, calmness exercises, and impulse control work. Theo is making progress, but he still needs some work. We will be doing a few more sessions where we work on desensitization and neutrality to distractions

“Schwartz” is a 2 year old poodle mix. He is a rescue and he is very fearful. At our first session we didn’t get off to a great start. He barked the entire hour and there was incident the first minute I walked in the house that gave him a negative association. He also tried to give me a warning up. His nervousness is manifesting as fear-reactivity. By our 3rd session he was finally starting to calm down around me, do some basic obedience (just to set him up for success and build our trust together) and he was finally eating treats from me. Not eating can be a stress indicator. Schwartz needs a few more lessons, but I was happy to at least see that breakthrough & progress at our 3rd session 🐾

This week at Pet To Pal:

1. “Goose” & “Maverick” are German shepherd puppies. We are working on relationship building, basic obedience, and trying to curb littermate syndrome before it develops. It’s important to give each dog individual training time, individual time to relax, and preferably not sleeping together. When our dogs our developing we want them to look to us for information & guidance, not each other. They also live on a property where they get to free roam quite a bit so it’s crucial that we teach them boundaries, impulse control, etc. They’re owners have been amazing to work with and I’m looking forward to continued progress with them. Follow along with their adventures

2. “Jax” the Labrador retriever is working on patience, calmness, asking nicely, and boundaries. Jax has a senior dog in the house, Lily, who is not thrilled about the new addition. It’s important we advocate for the older dog and not let the puppy be too much in their face. This is also where a crate has a lot of benefit. It’s a good idea for each of your dogs to have a designated space where they can go to decompress where the other dog is not allowed in

3. “Leo” the Bichonpoo is 3 years old. He is very nervous and also has some resource guarding issues. The first lesson he barked at me for the full hour. By lesson 2 he barked in spurts, and today he was happy to see me! We played fetch while we talked, and worked on a few techniques. Leo has a bad association to putting on his harness / leash so we’re working to counter condition that before we go further
🐾

“Tyson” is an 8 month old American bulldog . He’s already strong and also very rambunctious; which is not a great combination. This manifests as pulling on walks, jumping and being demanding when guests come over, etc. We worked on calmness exercises, impulse control, giving him more structure to focus his mind & energy, and changing his equipment to help set him family up for success

“Toby” the Maltipoo pup is a teachers pet! He was so eager to learn. We worked on some basic obedience, nipping strategies, relationship building, and recall. I also love how enthusiastic his family, including the young children were about practicing and participating in the training and the lessons

“Thanos” the cockapoo is 5 years old. He had some serious resource guarding issues. And generally fearful. It took 3 lessons for him to become buddies with me. Working with me, eating from my hand, willing and excited to cooperate and learn. We transitioned his family to hand feeding him to help build their relationship. We transitioned him away from sleeping on the bed / furniture to utilizing more “place” time. We worked on having a strong leave it, no reward marker, and some other obedience as well. Happy to say, no issues or incidents with him since we started our program! 🐾

“Millie” the 1 year old blue heeler x border collie x doberman x ? Moved here recently from Texas! Millie is extremely nervous. She spent almost the whole first hour barking at me fearfully. We went over some techniques and things to work on with her. By the 3rd session she had fully come out of her shell. She was approaching willingly, working with me directly, sitting in my lap and giving me more kisses than I could handle. Her confidence is already growing in lesson than a month. For her, that’s a big factor because that fear is leading to barking, lunging, etc. We are going to continue sessions, working more on walking and neutrality, but I am very happy with how she’s coming along. Millie and her HuMom have been a joy to work with. I love working with people who practice, are engaged and asking questions and have good attitudes . Keep up the good work Millie & her human 🐾

“Benny” the Aussie doodle is the new brother in the family, and he can be a little much while he’s learning how play and interact nicely. This can put stress on the senior dog in the family who doesn’t want to play that way anymore, and stress on the family when the puppy is very nippy. With Benny we worked on a lot of things. Because he’s a dog that goes to work with his owner, practicing calmness, neutrality, place / stay, Getting comfortable with the crate, impulse control + relationship building, etc. is very important for him (and for any dog) He’s such a smart pup and very motivated. His owner also does great photography! If you’re in toronto check out in liberty village!
She has been a pleasure to work with and I look forward to continued progress working with her & Benny 🐾

“Bruno” the American bulldog is 6 months old. He’s a very sweet dog, good temperament. But he’s already getting big and strong. He’s very engaged in our training and is very motivated to learn and figure out the task at hand. Bruno’s owners are using a prong collar with him. Prong collars are a very helpful tool for a lot of situations, but it wasn’t conditioned properly. So now he shuts down when it goes on. It’s important that when we’re introducing a new piece of equipment or tool with our dog - ANY tool / equipment ( A new collar, ecollar, muzzle, booties, etc) that it’s introduced in a very positive manner. We want the dog to WANT to put on their equipment and have a good feeling about wearing it. Bruno will be working on counter conditioning his collar this week and then we will be working on walking with him 🐾

02/09/2024

This week at Pet To Pal:

1. “Theebe” the shepherd / husky is just over 6 months. She is very nervous. Her family is working on being more assertive leaders and giving her structure. When our dog feels like you don’t have the answer for them, they need to figure out the answer for themselves. Which leads to reactivity or other undesired behaviours. When our dogs trust that they can look to you for guidance and information, that relieves a great deal of nervous energy for them. Confidence building, exposure, desensitization, counter conditioning are all key factors in confidence building 🐾

2. “Evie & Zoey” - Evie is 3.5 years old and Zoey is a Maltipoo that was 14 weeks old when we started. Evie is nervous, but Zoey the puppy is more confident and excitable. For better and for worse, our dogs learn from each other’s habits. They also serve as a distraction to each other. It’s important in a multi dog household that each dog gets individual training time. Set them up for success by practicing with as minimal distractions as possible at first. Once they’re getting better and understanding, start introducing more distractions and environments 🐾

3. “Toby” the Woodle is 2 years old. He is a big puller on the leash and a bit reactive. We worked to build a more clear decision making system for him to understand which behaviours pay off and which ones don’t. When we integrated Xena into our lesson to act as a distraction dog, he walked right past her with no issues. Figuring out what our dogs triggers are is important, and then giving them clear expectations of what to do when we encounter those triggers is also super important 🐾
