Yo, dog enthusiasts! Before you go all 'aww' and dash towards that adorable pup, remember to check with the human first. Not all dogs enjoy surprise hugs and smooches. 🐾💋

So, how do dogs learn? Simple - with a little bit of bribery and a lot of love! Use positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior and make your dog's tail wag with excitement. Remember, it's all about finding what works best for your furry friend and running with it!

Clicker training? Yeah, it's like dog training with a magic button. It's like, 'click', and your dog is like, 'oh, I get a treat!' and then they do the thing. It's like dog-training-in-a-box. But hey, it works, so who are we to judge?

How to teach your dog the "touch" cue.

1. Start off with both hands behind your back with your dog in front of you.
2. Move your hand with an open palm (as if you were about to give someone a handshake) in front of you dog. Your dog will move towards your hand and sniff it, at this point say ‘yes.’ and reward them.
3. Put your hand back behind your back and repeat that several times so they’re confident in leaning towards and making contact with your hand with their nose.
4. Now you can say ‘touch’ before presenting your hand and reward in exactly the same way.
5. Next is to increase how far away they have to travel to come bop your hand.
6. Gradually increase the distance you stand from them, so that eventually they can be across the room and will run to you and touch your hand.

I use the Touch cue to introduce my dog to strangers (quick and easy), recall. distraction from triggers, and just for fun. Try it out and tag us in the video.

Turns out, turning a trigger into a positive experience is like trying to get your dog to eat their veggies - it takes time and effort but trust us, it'll be worth it!

The key is to take baby steps, begin with a large threshold between your dog and the trigger. Practice teaching your dog to focus on you, rather than on the trigger ahead. You can use “watch” or “touch” commands. I personally use touch for everything, introductions, redirects, recall and just for fun.

Let's be real, dogs need brain stimulation too! Give them a puzzle toy and teach them new tricks for maximum entertainment. Trust us, it'll keep them occupied while you binge-watch your favorite show.

So, how do you deal with bad dog behaviour?

Some trainers ignore it, while others go full-on education collars or crating mode - we say, do what makes you and your furry friend happy (and out of trouble)! I personally ignore bad behaviour and reward the good.

Who thinks pet insurance is a waste of money? 😂 Like, seriously?! You wouldn't skimp on car insurance for your ride, so why risk your furry friend's health?

It may look harmless, but giving your furry pal a chance to snack on some fresh greenery isn’t always risk-free! Please don’t let them eat grass!

The pesticides sprayed on it can be toxic for your dog. Also, when plucking the grass from the ground, your dog may ingest intestinal parasites such as hookworms or roundworms.

My life with a reactive dog:

It’s incredible how different my life would be without a reactive dog.
I would be able to go to stores, parks, & other public places without fear.
I would be able to have my dog meet new people & dogs without feeling anxious.
I could live the dream and have my pup play with whoever, and meet whoever.
I wouldn’t get dirty looks when I say he doesn’t want to be sniffed/touched or he may react.
But how uneducated I would be?
I would still judge people for a dog that snaps, shows it's teeth, or growls!
I would still believe in “it’s all in how they’re raised” versus learning behavior is genetic.
I wouldn’t ever dare use a training tool such as a muzzle as I would think they are cruel
I would think “what did that person do to that poor dog to make it mean".
It’s made me more understanding as a dog owner and as my dogs trainer.
It’s helped me to see that it’s not all one way or another.
I opened my eyes to different training techniques and given me a new path in life.
I even have grown to understand reactive dogs instead of judge them.
Please, if you see a dog with a muzzle, e collar, ect. please don’t judge
Ask, and you may be surprised that these dogs aren’t abused, they are loved more then you know.
Reactive dogs want to be loved too, they just sometimes struggle in their mind and take a little longer to warm up.
So next time you see a dog in a store that seems reactive or is wearing a training tool.
Try not to judge try and understand that it isn’t to be mean, it’s to protect our dogs and yours! ❤️
