Cuteness overload! PONCHO ❤️
This little man arrived last week and is looking for a fairly active home with no kids (under 12🤔) and no cats. 67 years ago, Laika was launched into space.

Laika, ′′Little Barker"" but her real name was Kudrjavka, Russian for ′′curly."" She was captured on the street, in Moscow.

Half Husky and half Terrier, she was around 3 years old at the time. She was chosen because she was calm, docile and perfectly adaptable to the Sputnik 2 capsule. Equipped for life support (food and water), the mission didn't involve return. For Laika, it was a death sentence.

The interior of the satellite was lined and the interior space was wide enough to allow Laika to lie or stand. The internal temperature was set to 15. and a refrigeration system had to protect the animal from excessive thermal surges.

On November 3rd at 2 AM, Sputnik 2 was launched into space. Laika probably survived for seven hours.

But some sources claim that agony was much longer: four days.

Alone, in space.

The satellite returned to atmosphere 5 months later, April 14, 1958, after turning 2.570 laps around Earth.

It disintegrated upon return to the atmosphere.

Every year, before Fall, I feel compelled to tell this story and possibly do it with new words. There's a deep guilt that all of us should feel reading what we did to Laika. Human progress has often been achieved at the expense of animals that had nothing to do with our desire for supremacy.

Many people believe this was an acceptable price for our conquests, but it seems obvious, even reading this story, that was really just a trivial form of prevarication.

We had a duty to choose another path.

We still have that duty today.

Sorry humanity has failed you, Laika 💔

Happy Sunday! We’d like to introduce you to the Little Miss, LAIKA!Spayed female, 6 kilos, approximately 4 years. WILD GUESS at Breed: Spaniel/Poodle/Aussie/ChihuahuaIN VICTORIA, B.C. Laika has been in Victoria, BC, decompressing since mid January. This little lady is extremely sensitive and was quite timid and fearful when she arrived but has grown to really love her current foster and the other five dogs in the household. She is very playful with other dogs. She loves, more than anything, going for walks and just being close to you in the home, often snuggling up to you on the sofa. She displays some excitement reactivity when seeing other dogs but we have been working on distraction. She’s a real sniffer and explorer. We think she's a smart cookie and could learn tricks/agility if her guardian was up to it. Ideally, we would like anyone interested in adoption to spend at least a couple of weeks getting to know her, and for her to trust, before moving on to her permanent home. That would mean coming to spend time with her and walking her for a transition period. She had to get over a lot of challenges in the last couple months (possibly from past trauma) so we think a fast move might set her back somewhat. Not sure, but we think she prefers female humans. Children would be too unpredictable for Laika. Could be okay with cats. Laika has had some trauma around being handled and does not do well with being pressured to greet humans. Anyone who adopts this girl must have patience and understand how to go slow in her introductions to new things, as she can get overwhelmed easily. If you have a calm, easy-going, routine home that can take a little bit of a project, you will be greatly rewarded. As you get to know Laika you will see how sweet and loving she is. For more information or if you’d like to ask more about Laika please email [email protected] or message us through here. Adoption info and application is on the website www.mex-can.org. Fingers crossed that Laika can find her forever home. Please share. Thank you!

Here’s a long overdue update on the goings on, north and south. Four of the January dogs have found their forever homes. Gober, now known as Toby, is living the life with Pat and Helen and their little dog Honey from Dog Bless. Clovi, now Clover, is with Leah, Jordan and little Winnie. Chica is now with Michael and Carmen, and Milo is on the north Island with a family of five.
Little Laika, that was also in the January group, still awaits a home. I am still evaluating her as she arrived as frightful little lady and on top of that developed an intestinal issue (overgrowth of clostridium perfringens, ouch!) from being overstressed. All better now thanks to treatment. However she has an issue with being handled certain ways so I’m working on that And, also here in Victoria still waiting for that special home to come along, is Bodo.
Down south, the four female pups have now been fully vaccinated and will start their slow introductions to the outside world.
And we’re getting ready for another four pooches to fly up the middle of this month. All have homes waiting!

Here’s a little update on the two dogs found a couple weeks ago. I’m calling them Callie and Jon, because they were found in a “callejon” (get it?😝). Jon is the beige scruffy fella and is very leery and will hide if given the chance. He seems to want to receive scritches but will come close, then run away. Callie (black with white short haired) and is much more confident and would probably do best as an only dog for success as she has some “dominant “ behaviours. They’ve both received their first vaccine.

Our friend and supporter Michèle Favarger has published this concise guide for anyone looking to adopt a rescued dog. She has managed to stick to main points without delving into complexities and she has included a lots of sources. You might want to check it out.
Available on Amazon I believe.
Thanks Michèle. 👍🏼

Look who’s back ☹️ BODO! I’m feeling pretty defeated, trying to stay optimistic, while dreading the thought that this guy may end up being another “permanent “ dog and therefore make my returning to Mexico a near impossibility. UGH! So, why was he returned this time? What did I miss in their application and meet and greet? 25 years of doing this and I’m still stunned and disappointed in people. On the other hand, is there a way more awesome home out there for this guy? Well, I wish you’d appear because I’m growing weary and Bodo really needs more attention than I can give him. So, the reason for his return was that “he’s too small, they are used to bigger dogs, he’s more like a cat and not needy enough”. Fair enough, they want in their words “ a Labrador or Golden Retriever personality”. I encourage people to think hard about what they are looking for in a dog. Moving them around from one place to another does not help their case. I do think Bodo is happy being back because he has his doggy friends here, there’s that ❤️. Read his bio on the website and share please. It’s time this guy found his perfect person. No kids, no cats. Www.mex-can.org

Patsy, the senior dog rescued a few months ago ( and still hoping for a forever home), has taken well to the shenanigans of the puppies. ❤️ they’re spending more time with her and next they will be introduced to some of the other adults dogs.
PLEASE if you are curious about the bios, adoption process, application or fees go to our website www.mex-can.org
