Happy International Assistance Dog Week! This week, we celebrate the incredible assistance dogs that transform lives every day. From guiding individuals with visual impairments to alerting those with hearing loss, these dogs are true heroes.

Featured here is Riley, who used to hang out behind our reception desk back in 2021! Riley was living with one of our receptionists, who was volunteering as a puppy raiser for BC & Alberta Guide Dogs. These days Riley is working as a PTSD service dog, and we are so proud of him!

While fireworks are great fun for most people, many pets can be terrified. Some pet lovers use calming chews to relieve their furry family member’s stress, but consuming too many can cause severe medical distress. Find out what happened when two curious pets ingested an entire bottle of 160 calming chews in this month’s edition of Toxin Tails.

Many people use calming chews to relieve their pet’s anxiety, especially during the July 4 holiday. Not only can the sound of fireworks scare your pet, but a change in routine or sudden influx of visitors can cause pets great distress. While these supplements can help calm your pet, they can also ...

Do you have any plans to travel with your dog to the United States?

The United States (U.S.) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced upcoming changes to the import requirements for dogs entering the U.S.
As of August 1, 2024, US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will issue regulations to control the entry of dogs into the United States from other countries. These rules apply to all dogs, including puppies, service animals, and dogs that left the United States and are returning. They also apply whether you are a U.S. citizen, legal U.S. resident, or foreign national. This does not apply to cats at this time.

As of August 1, 2024, all dogs entering the U.S. must:

- be at least 6 months of age
- have an International Organization for Standardization (ISO)-compliant microchip
- appear healthy upon arrival
- have a CDC Dog Import Form receipt
- have additional documentation, which varies depending on where the dog has been in the past 6 months before entering the U.S., and the dog's rabies vaccination status

Visit www.cdc.gov/dogtravel to determine what rules apply to importing a dog based on its circumstances. If you do not follow CDC's rules, the dog may not be allowed to enter the United States.

Veterinarian’s Role:
The transportation paperwork, now called the CDC Dog Import Form, will soon be required. However, the form has not yet been released yet by the CDC. Once available, hospitals will be able to evaluate the workload for veterinarians and set a fee for the required paperwork accordingly. The CFIA is currently unable to provide endorsement for export documents for dogs entering the U.S., as the process is still being discussed with the CDC.

We anticipate more information to be available by mid-July and will continue to update our clients as we learn more. At this time we are preparing by ensuring our patients are microchipped and scanning the chip prior to administering rabies vaccinations.

If you need to schedule your pet in for an exam and vaccinations, or have further questions/concerns please feel free to contact us at 250-478-4075 or [email protected]

Most of us are aware of fleas and ticks, but did you know that pets can get lice too? These tiny parasites can be spread by direct contact with an affected animal, often in high traffic areas like dog parks, kennel facilities or on pack walks.

The good news? Lice tend to be species-specific and your dog will not give you lice or vice-versa. Keeping your pet up to date on their regular parasite preventative for fleas and ticks prevents lice as well.

Is your pet up to date on parasite preventative? Give the clinic a call to set up an appointment to discuss a parasite prevention protocol that works for you and your pet.
