Summer months gift us with long, sunny days to enjoy the outdoors with our furry companions, but it’s important to be aware of the summer do and don’ts when it comes to keeping our pets safe.
Monitor Your Pets For:
🌊**WATER INTOXICATION**🌊
By drinking/taking in excessive amounts of water, sodium levels become unbalanced resulting in the swelling of some organs, including the brain.
Symptoms include:
nausea, lethargy, weakness or loss of coordination, excessive salivating, dilated pupils, pale gums, difficulty breathing, and other neurological symptoms.
High risk:
Toy breeds and small dogs.
☀️**HEAT STROKE**☀️
Pets left in high temperatures for even short periods are at risk of suffering from heat stroke or irreversible organ damage.
Symptoms include:
excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, weakness, loss of coordination or collapse, seizures, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and elevated body temperatures.
High risk:
animals with flat faces (such as bulldogs and persian cats), elderly animals, animals that are overweight, and those with heart or lung disease.
