Spear Grass!
This very dangerous grass is prevalent with the hotter weather. It has nasty little seed pods that are barbed, so they will work their way into your dog's coat and skin.
The most common areas for spear grass to embed are between toes, inside ears and mouths, and armpits/belly.
Taking an extra five minutes to check your dog over after every walk could save them from a lot of pain and discomfort, and potentially save you thousands of dollars in vet bills!
If you are able to, it is best to keep yourself and your dog away from any area where this grass grows.

The nature of matting:
One of the most common reactions we get from owners when we tell them their dog is matted is surprise, because they brush their dog daily. Unfortunately, more often than not, it's only the tip of the hair that's being brushed. This can leave your dog looking fluffy and tangle free, but hides the web of matting that can spread at the base of the coat.
The following videos show the difference between a coat that has been combed through from base to tip, and one that has just been surface brushed.
