Thank you! This pile of pumpkins has been diverted from our local landfill! ☺️ Instead of making potent methane gas at the dump, we will use them along with the piles of leaves that have been generously donated to make homemade compost.

Our farm store is now closed for the season, but we are happily accepting pumpkins 🎃 and leaves 🍁 until November 7th. If you haven’t already, please consider donating these items to MD Gardens and help reduce the strain on our local landfills.

If your pumpkin didn’t end up on your (or a farm animal’s) dinner plate, don’t let it become waste. In Canada, thousands of metric tonnes of pumpkins are produced every year just for this season. These pumpkins have faces drawn or carved into them for decoration and then they are often thrown away. Please don’t let this be the case. If your Halloween pumpkin 🎃 is paint and glitter-free, give it a second life with us as compost!

Microorganisms will be hard at work all winter and spring to magically transform these donated pumpkins and leaves into compost - the most valuable soil amendment known to gardeners. We will then use the finished compost next growing season to enhance the health of our soil so we can continue producing nutritious and delicious food for our community.

Unfortunately, we are not equipped to collect these donations directly from households. However, we are extremely grateful to folks that are dropping by with their pumpkins and leaves and adding them to the established piles in the driveway of our farm store at MD Gardens. We are located on the corner of Central Street and 8th Avenue North in Warman across from the Great Plains College / High School campus.

Thank you ♥️ to everyone that has helped spread the word and generously dropped off their pumpkins and leaves!

Our last day for 2024!

We will be open today from 12-5 pm before CLOSING for the season. We will open again NEXT SPRING. 🌱

A heartfelt THANK YOU ♥️ to everyone that has come to get their groceries from us. We take immense pride in the produce we grow and are honoured that so many people selected US to be their neighbourhood farmers these last 25 weeks. ☺️

We have had an amazing growing season this year! We are happy to report that our little urban farm proudly grew and harvested over two and a half metric tonnes of food (>5000 lbs) this season, with half being delicious heirloom tomatoes! 🍅

We have been asked by some folks where our “other farm” is located to be able to grow the amount of produce we generated this season. We are happy to report that we don’t have one. ALL of our produce is entirely grown by US on our urban farm lot in Warman, SK.

Everything we offer is untreated and grown as naturally as possible without the use of chemical sprays or synthetic additives. We strive to ensure that our produce is grown in ways that support local soil and wildlife biodiversity with the ultimate goal of nourishing the people consuming it. We firmly believe that healthy soil equals healthy plants, which will help yield healthy humans. Food is one of the best basic forms of medicine and the reason that MD Gardens will continue growing.🍴🩺

As we close for 2024, we thank everyone for their incredible support. We are looking forward to getting ready for our third growing season. We hope to see you all next spring!

Eat well & Be well.

4 days until we close for the season!

After October 31st, give your Halloween 🎃 pumpkins a second life with us!

Instead of sending your old pumpkins to rot at the dump where they can emit potent methane gas, repurpose them with us at MD Gardens! We will transform your discarded Halloween pumpkins into carbon-sequestering, water-retaining, and soil-enhancing compost. ☺️

We are an urban farm in Warman that relies on homemade compost (or “black gold” as we affectionately call it) to nourish our soil and the veggies grown in that soil. The addition of compost helps maintain our soil’s ecology, which enriches the plants grown in that soil to ultimately nourish the living organisms (including people) consuming those plants.

* Please note that we are unable to accept painted or glittered pumpkins as they are not compostable. Be sure to remove any wax or tea light candles as they also do not compost.

Along with pumpkins, we are still looking for donated leaves 🍂 to help balance the ratios of the components in our compost bins. If you haven’t already, please consider donating these items to help us build our soil with compost and reduce the strain on our local landfills. Please leave your pumpkin/leaf donations on the driveway inside the rope at MD Gardens. We are located on the corner of Central Street and 8th Avenue North in Warman across from the Great Plains College / High School campus.

Kindly spread the word and happy pumpkin carving! If you are not donating your pumpkin, why not try your hand at making pumpkin pies, soups, muffins, and breads. Some folks like to roast the seeds for a fun and nutritious snack.

Make flavour the theme of your weekend menu!

Let us help you build a flavour foundation for your homemade stocks, soups, stews, sauces, risottos, and braising recipes. We still have LOTS of carrots 🥕, celery, leeks, onions, garlic 🧄, sweet peppers 🫑, and ripe tomatoes 🍅. These are the perfect fresh ingredients to add to your shopping list for making the aromatic bases of either mirepoix, soffrito/sofrito or the Holy Trinity for many French, Mediterranean, Creole or Cajun dishes. We also love using these ingredients for making a delicious homemade vegetable stock that we freeze as smaller portions for later use.

We also have fresh lettuce, herbs, and Swiss chard available.

This is our SECOND LAST WEEKEND before we CLOSE for the season. If you have been wanting to check us out, come before Sunday, November 3rd, which is the LAST day our farm store will be open.

Thank you ♥️ to everyone for shopping locally and supporting our efforts this 2024 season to offer delicious, fresh, and nutrient-dense produce the way nature intended.

We are located in Warman on the corner of 8th Avenue N and Central Street directly across from the Great Plains College/High School Campus.

We are open every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, & Sunday from 12-5pm. Closed Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Wanted: Dry, debris-free, fallen leaves.* 🍂

It’s that time of year again when there is a crispness in the air and the task of raking fallen leaves is upon us. Although tempting to bag and send it to the landfill, leaves can yield a goldmine for the garden when they are used for compost or mulch!

Using fallen leaves to add to the compost bin or to make a leaf mulch is economical, sustainable, and probably the easiest way to amend or build soil health. Layers of leaves can also serve as carbon-rich “blankets” over beds as they break down and provide insulating habitats for small wildlife during the winter months to help support local biodiversity.

Nature builds soil with fallen leaves and so do we! If you are not intending to use your collection of fallen leaves for your own purposes, please consider gifting us your leaf litter rather than dumping or burning it. Please drop your bags of dry leaves off in the driveway at MD Gardens. We are the urban farm located in Warman on the corner of 8th Avenue N and Central Street across from the Great Plains College/High School Campus.

*Please note that we believe in developing soil health to enrich the plants grown in that soil to ultimately nourish the living organisms (including people) consuming those plants. We reach this goal primarily through making our own compost. While we strive to grow as naturally as possible with the aid of composting, we are not equipped to manage everything. At this time, we cannot accept other yard or household wastes such as twigs/branches, flowers, wood chips, kitchen scraps, and cigarette butts. We kindly ask for (and greatly appreciate) leaves only. However, like last year, we will soon be looking for unwanted or carved pumpkins 🎃 after Halloween (future post coming).

We appreciate it if folks can spread the word so we can keep feeding our compost bins to support our goals of cultivating health and vitality in our community.

📢 With single digit daytime highs, we are currently running an END OF SEASON SALE on ALL our produce! Check below for some highlights on available produce and be sure to stock up! 🛒

Carrots 🥕- our fall carrots are extra sweet and tender! We sowed these carrots mid-summer and leave them in the ground as long as possible. The recent cooler temperatures coax the carrots into converting their starches into sugars to prevent freezing and yield incredible flavour in the process

Sweet peppers - oodles of green 🫑and other bright colours with a refreshingly sweet taste. Peppers are one of the few veggies that require no blanching when freezing for winter eating.

Leeks - give your homemade soups that special touch with the unique flavour of leeks. Use them in place of onions and enjoy their milder, sweeter flavour. Best of all, they store exceptionally long if you have a root cellar and freeze well if you don’t.

Heirloom tomatoes 🍅 - if you haven’t got your fill this summer, now is your chance. Freeze, can, dehydrate them to enjoy during the cold winter months

Herbs 🌿- beautifully vibrant plants in peak flavour. Chives, rosemary, thyme, sage, oregano, and dill. Be sure to try your hand at preserving them to enjoy until next summer

Celery - started from seed back in February and grown as nature intended without any sprays! Homegrown celery has one of the most amazing flavours, which makes it great as a base ingredient for soups, stews and sauces. It can also be used for juicing, smoothies or eating raw as a snack. Grab an abundance now to chop and freeze for later use in winter cooking

Garlic 🧄- a must have for anything you are planning to cook up. Not cooking? Plant the garlic as seed now for a crop to harvest next summer. Each planted clove will grow into an entirely new head of garlic with bonus spring scapes.

Come check out the end of our growing season’s bounty. We are located in Warman on the corner of 8th Ave N and Central Street across from the Great Plains College/High School Campus.

We are open every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12-5pm. Closed Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Thyme to dry some herbs ☺️

There is no need for fancy dehydrator equipment to treat your winter self to the aromatic luxury of dried herbs. 🌿 While there is no one right way to preserve herbs, it can be as simple as hanging some of them up on a repurposed wire hanger out of the sun.

If you have some herbs still growing in your own garden, try your hand at drying or freezing them. If you are in need of some fresh specimens, we have a beautiful selection of woody herbs at their peak flavour that are perfect for drying now to enjoy all winter long. FYI: Homemade herb salts make a great gift 😉

Here is our current fresh list:

Looking for a way to get a head? 🥬 Lettuce help you this Thanksgiving weekend!
We are OPEN this holiday weekend (Saturday to Monday 12-5pm) and have beautiful heads of lettuce for purchase along with all the fixings needed to make a mouthwatering garden-fresh salad. 🥗

If you are looking for a great recipe for a deliciously simple dressing, try this one from Mandy’s Gourmet Salads. We usually have a jar made up in the fridge to use as a quick salad dressing or a dip.

Enjoy your weekend and thank you for supporting local! ♥️

Mandy's House Dressing
(Makes 2 cups)
-2 cloves garlic
-6 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
-¼ cup maple syrup
-1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
-1 ¼ cup olive oil
-½ teaspoon salt
-1 ½ teaspoon freshly ground pepper

Instructions: Following are the original instructions, but we have found that it also works to mix everything at once in a bullet blender - no scraping or drizzling necessary. ☺️

In a blender, combine the garlic, vinegar, maple syrup, and mustard. Process on medium high speed until smooth and well combined. Scrape down the sides.

With the blender running on low speed, slowly drizzle in the olive oil until emulsified and thickened. Add salt and pepper and season to taste. Refrigerate until ready to use. 🍽

We are located in Warman on the corner of 8th Ave N and Central Street across from the Great Plains College/High School Campus.

Meet what some consider as the most underrated vegetable around - Swiss chard! If you like the nutrition and cooking versatility of spinach or kale, you need to try Swiss chard! However, unlike kale and spinach, chard is basically two veggies in one - the leafy green tops with colourful veins and the vibrantly coloured edible (celery-tasting) stalks.

Although Swiss chard is available year round in grocery stores, please do not pass judgement on this often sad and wilted-looking vegetable that appears as though it has been forgotten in the produce section. You want to try Swiss chard when it has been freshly harvested with young, tender leaves and crisp stalks and when all its health benefits have not been lost in transport. Did you know that chard is a nutrient powerhouse such that a single serving covers your daily need for vitamin K and packs a hearty dose of fibre along with other vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants?

While some grow this vegetable ornamentally in their flower beds because its vibrantly hued stalks and leafy greens are so pleasing to the eye, do not let your palate miss out on trying this delicious and adaptable green! Swiss chard’s flavour pairs really well with garlic, lemon, mushrooms, and Parmesan making recipe options endless. Try it sautéed as a side dish or added to rustic soups, stews, frittatas or pastas. It can be baked wrapped around fish or eaten raw as a sandwich wrap or tossed in a salad or smoothie. Try Googling Swiss chard recipes and start experimenting! You will soon see why it is one of our favourite veggies - its easy to grow and hard to beat its nutrient profile, taste, and versatility in the kitchen!

We grow several types of chard at our urban farm. Do not let this growing season pass without trying it! We are located in Warman on the corner of 8th Ave N and Central Street across from the Great Plains College/High School Campus.

We are open every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12-5pm. Closed Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will remain open as long as we have produce to offer. ☺️

This year we experimented growing ginger and learned that good things take time! These young ginger rhizomes have been growing since January in our greenhouse and they were just harvested. They are aromatic, tender, and have a mild spice. Freshly harvested ginger is definitely different from the aged ginger found year round in the grocery stores and a must try before the season ends!

Use the young ginger to make a delicious stir-fry, soup, or tea and use the stems as you would lemon grass. The rhizomes store exceptionally well in the freezer for later use. You can find them in our farm store while quantities last!

Slurp season is upon us! 🥣

One of our favourite pairings from the garden has to be the sophisticated sweet essence of leeks and the humble, hearty potato. Together, they create a delicious meal that can come together quickly and satisfy all hungers.

The recipe variations of potato leek soup or vichyssoise are almost endless - enjoy it hot or cold; mix in cream or not; add bacon or not; serve it blended or chunky; make it vegan or not. Regardless of your spin on it, it will undoubtedly yield a bowl of tasty, cozy comfort that is perfect as we ease into the fall months. Freeze or can it and enjoy the velvety deliciousness all winter.

If you are looking for a simple gluten-free twist, consider trying your hand at crisping up finely diced leek greens or the peeled potato skins for a “no waste”topping instead of croutons! ☺️

At MD Gardens, we have all the fresh ingredients needed to make an incredibly luscious potato leek soup. Our urban farm store is located in Warman on the corner of 8th Ave N and Central Street across from the Great Plains College/High School Campus.

We are open every day from 12-5pm.
