Despite the weather, it was a busy day yesterday for American Woodcocks. 8 different woodcocks were found in the downtown core, thankfully 6 of them are now receiving treatment for their injuries at the Toronto Wildlife Centre, including this one!

6 more woodcocks were found today, unfortunately 5 of them did not survive their collisions.

Keep an eye out for injured birds this spring. If you find a bird needing help in the GTA, please call us for the speediest reply, messages on social media can be missed.

In response to some of the feedback we received about Juju, the Cape Parrot that was poached in Stutterheim, we want to thank everyone for their input and support. We appreciate the concerns shared and we’re always pleased to learn from the extant body of knowledge regarding the parrots.

We are immersed in research about the Cape Parrot and its habitat, with our work based on the Cape Parrot and Mistbelt Action Plan, drawn up with the assistance of numerous stakeholders including government, academics, conservation bodies and captive breeders. We also support the One Plan approach to conservation and the transparent and meticulous use of a stud book for captive populations.

In this particular situation, we have used a protocol for injured birds compiled with input from several sources including local and international Parrot experts. This protocol takes into account several factors, including the welfare of the bird and the overall good of the species. We have also done all the relevant tests for diseases.

We also partner with local communities to find socio-economic and educational opportunities to try and impact the type of behaviour that has given rise to this situation.

Juju’s story is not yet over and we will update as we go. Any useful input is welcome via [email protected].

Tonight is earth hour! From 8:30 to 9:30pm you can switch off and give an hour for earth. But why stop there? We are heading into spring migration and light pollution directly harms migratory birds. To help keep birds safe this spring, consider turning off lights at night.

Wild Cape Parrots are found only in South Africa and are our only endemic parrots. The Cape Parrot has a close association with the yellowwood tree; they have a preference for nesting in the hollows of mature or dead yellowwood trees. 🦜🌳
Unfortunately, the Cape Parrot is currently facing conservation challenges, including habitat loss, which makes efforts to protect both the parrots and their preferred trees necessary for the survival of these beautiful birds.

We are actively working to protect the Cape Parrot’s habitat for generations to come, but we need your help. 🤝🌿 Together, we can make a positive impact. Visit www.capeparrotproject.org to see how you can get involved.

December 4th is World Wildlife Conservation Day, a day to raise awareness and engage conversations about species that are endangered or under threat of extinction. Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre is committed to the conservation of wetlands and local wildlife.

Did you know that the Trumpeter Swans were once considered extirpated or locally extinct in Ontario by 1886, and globally were listed as a Critically Endangered species? Biologist Harry Lumsden began a provincial reintroduction program in the early 1980's to re-establish the Trumpeter swan in its former habitat and range.
With prime wetland habitat, and archaeological evidence confirming the historical presence of Trumpeters in the Wye Valley, Wye Marsh became a co-operator in the restoration of this magnificent species in 1989. The original captive breeding pair of Trumpeters at Wye Marsh were "Big Guy" and "Lady Girl", who successfully raised the first cygnet in 1990, "Pig Pen". In 1993, Pig Pen and her mate became the first wild nesting pair of Trumpeters in Wye Marsh in over 200 years.

Does your bird make contact calls? Contact calls are used by birds to help maintain flock unity while flying and foraging. These calls are typically short and communicate location and proximity of flockmates. In captivity, contact calls can escalate into screaming if unacknowledged. If you find the contact call too loud or disruptive, training can be performed to replace the natural contact call with a more pleasant noise- such as a whistle- to help meet the same behavioral need of your bird (ie: knowing where you are when out of sight).

Good Morning All!

Today I’m sharing the timeline of our eaglet’s remaining development with you. I hope this helps answer many of your questions! I’ll start with some frequently asked questions:

Murphy has directly fed the eaglet only once that we know of - when they were first introduced. We’re not expecting him to feed the chick directly, as we’d prefer to see the chick eating on its own right now.

Murphy does not sleep in the nest with the eaglet.

The eaglet WILL be banded before release.

Flight training is very instinctual, but birds of prey tend to be a bit lazy, so we’ll make sure our eaglet is flying enough in our 200 foot flight enclosure to build muscle and learn to take off and land properly! We won’t need to worry as much about imprinting at that point.

We will release at a site where we know there are many adult and juvenile eagles so OUR juvie can continue to learn how to find food from these birds.

Once his fostering duties are done, Murphy will return to the public bald eagle aviary and re-join his previous 4 eagle enclosure-mates!

And a reminder: we do not name birds that are set for release. It’s a rehabilitation superstition that something will go wrong if we do! You are all welcome to call the eagles whatever you’d like!

Timeline:

May 5th -
6 weeks old - should be walking well and begin to tear food on own.

May 12th -
Perches will be added to existing enclosure so eaglet can start branching.

May 19th -
Plan to start switching entirely to whole food.

June 2nd -
10 weeks - plan to move to large flight to start flight training. We’ll move Murphy in as well and provide him lower perches.

June 18th -
FATHER’S DAY and targeted release date! Details will be provided. Public is welcome.

A Murphy/RockBaby/Eaglet T-Shirt will be released on May 5th.
