There is a snake party in Manitoba! 🐍 Manitoba boasts the largest concentration of snakes not only in North America but across the globe. An estimated population of approximately 70,000 snakes gather in this region annually for winter hibernation. With the onset of warmer weather typically in mid-May, all 70,000 of these snakes emerge from hibernation, signaling the arrival of spring.

Preeti was strolling through the city one afternoon when an unusual sight stopped her in her tracks. A Cooper’s hawk was walking unsteadily on the ground near a storefront window! When Preeti got closer, the bird didn’t make any attempts to flee and she knew he needed help.

Once admitted, Dr. Cameron Berg noticed the new patient was acting dull - a telltale sign of head trauma after colliding with a window. The poor bird was too weak to fly and his wings drooped down at his sides, so the veterinarian took x-rays to check for broken bones. Luckily there were no fractures, which meant the pain the patient was experiencing was due to soft tissue trauma caused by the impact.

After two months under the Rehabilitation Team’s care, he’s showing great signs of progress! His right wing is fully recovered and he’s flying fast with good endurance. Staff can still see a slight droop in his other wing, so he’ll continue to be cared for and monitored until he’s ready to return to the wild.

The Canadian Prairies are home to many wonderful birds. These birds are highly specialized to thrive in Canada’s grasslands, one of the most endangered ecosystems on earth.
