STUDY FINDS 500% INCREASE IN GRAIN-FREE SALES OVER LAST DECADE BUT ZERO INCREASE IN DCM...
The scientists (allegedly) hired by Big Pet Food (Hills, in this case, but many more may have been involved) to push the grain-free-causing-DCM nonsense (when any low meat/taurine dry food can and has caused DCM in pets, grain or grain-free) - Lisa Freeman and Stern and co (who also employed to write a LOT about how bad FRESH food is, for some strange reason) - are now being sued by a grain-free pet company for damages of more than $2bil.
In 2022, other scientists (not paid by big pet food) published a study comparing the incidence of DCM in US dogs from 2000-2019 (59,000 cases, assessed by cardiologists) to the rise of grain-free pet food store sales in that period.
From 2011-2019, grain-free pet food sales rose by 500% (represented by the shaded vertical bars in the graph).
In that time, the incidence of DCM (the steady line in the image) rose...not at all.
Mad - no explosion in DCM cases in the US with the meteroric rise of grain-free!
Tough one to explain in court that one.
The authors state:
"Based on the data we received from veterinary cardiologists across the United States, we did not observe a significant increase in DCM incidence rate over time, which included the recent period when grain-free pet food sales grew exponentially"
And still today, without a SINGLE STUDY linking grain-free diets to DCM of any merit (there are two HIGHLY- QUESTIONABLE-but-as-of-yet-unredacted studies written by the stooges above still out there pointing fingers), our vets, lead by the veterinary "industry", warn folk away from grain-free dry food towards wheat and corn etc due to some magical element in cereal that protects the hearts of carnivores (an element they are yet to name...as that element is TAURINE...which of course comes from meat, hence the name).
Is HIGH CARB grain-free any BETTER for DCM in meat eaters than HIGH CARB cereal-based crap promoted by the veterinary industry? It remains to be seen but I have always said - not likely.
The problem with both products in terms of DCM, is 3 fold:
1. They are low in MEAT and meat provides taurine.
2. They are in high in indigestible plant fibre, and fibre block taurine reabsorption
3. They use conical flask supplements for methionine and cysteine, the building blocks of taurine, and those are affected by processing and storage.
Both products have that issue so I expect both products to cause DCM in meat eaters.
In fact, this graph lends credence to that fact. If grain-free was protective, we would see a drop in DCM cases with the rise of the good stuff (as we will see soon with the rise of raw feeding -remember raw-feeding vets are not seeing DCM AT ALL in dogs in their care...and virtually no bloat and significantly reduces kidney disease and pancreatitis, etc).
The data will catch up on the lies. It always does. But it's a touch unforgivable when the veterinary sector, which claims to be about evidence, will stubbornly hold the company line, no matter what, to death.
It would be nice if the veterinary sector or, dare to dream, the FDA, was taking this case, fighting for our pet's health, the thing they were sworn to do.
But no, it's a private individual putting his life on hold and his business on the line, to force the truth out into public.
This is the way of things. There is precious little protection or rebuke for you the consumer, be it of pet or human foods or products. The regulators are now in place to protect them. Not you.
