This urban farm provides a local approach to healthy food in order to help solve the problem of not knowing where our food comes from and what toxins it may harbour, ultimately benefitting our community by growing food in a sustainable way.

Free produce for a month:

Small Scale Farms is 5 things.

1. A food hub. We grow food. We sell food. We retail local products. We buy food from producers, distributors and farmers. We want to buy more. The more we buy, the more we can literally grow the market. Purchasing from farmers is our number one goal.

2. An online marketplace for local vendors to sell local goods. A sales channel. A network. A collaboration. An algorithm.

3. A promotable, profitable food system, sustainable to its core. Small scale farming is key.

4. A distribution network. A local distribution network. Why have this many delivery/drivers on the road without a local benefit? At a cost to the environment? Times have changed. We have to change with it.

5. A community. Where we actually come together to support one and other. Somewhere to figure out the work that needs to be done and somewhere to do it.

I just want you to know who we are because Small Scale Farms is me and it’s you. It’s all of us. We are all directly connected to a food system (or lack there of). And we are among many who want to fix it. And who ARE fixing it.

CONTEST DETAILS:

Tell us who you are Niagara. We want to know. But help us tell others who we are by sharing this post too! Better yet, show us who you are with a selfie - or a post a picture of something you love - and we will post as many random pictures as we possibly can underneath yours. Let’s get to know each other and you are entered to win local produce for the entire month of August. You and your family will be welcome to set up weekly visits to pick your own produce, or choose from another farmers produce on our market stand.

Good luck!

Name will be drawn July 30th.

I didn’t realize our “This Week’s Harvest” posts weren’t showing up here. Sorry about that. Message us anytime, but also, I will be smartening up for next week. 🙂

Also, while I’ve got you, we have somehow run out of plastic bags for market and deliveries (I know, I know, I would love to phase out the plastic eventually but our budget doesn’t allow it just yet),…anywho,….if you have any extra plastic (or paper!) bags laying around that you don’t want, we’d love to use them.

THANKS!!

Looks like we have some scouting happening. When the bees begin thinking about swarming, they send out scouts to, well, scout for a great place to live. This is what’s happening here. Fingers crossed. We’d love another swarm.

Aren’t bees the most fascinating creatures?!!

Portuguese designer Susana Soares has developed a device for detecting cancer and other serious diseases using trained bees. The bees are placed in a glass chamber into which the patient exhales; the bees fly into a smaller secondary chamber if they detect cancer.

Scientists have found that honey bees - Apis mellifera - have an extraordinary sense of smell that is more acute than that of a sniffer dog and can detect airborne molecules in the parts-per-trillion range.

Bees can be trained to detect specific chemical odours, including the biomarkers associated with diseases such as tuberculosis, lung, skin and pancreatic cancer.
