One of the joys of raising backyard chickens is the delightful variety of eggs they produce. Unlike the uniform white or brown eggs found in grocery stores, backyard chicken eggs come in an array of shapes, sizes, and colors. Depending on the breed, your hens might lay eggs that are pale blue, soft green, rich brown, or even speckled. Some eggs might be rounder, while others have a more elongated shape. This natural diversity makes collecting eggs a fun and rewarding experience every day. Each egg is a little surprise, reflecting the unique character of the hen that laid it. Plus, these farm-fresh eggs are often richer in flavor and nutrients, making them a real treat at the breakfast table!

Here are four short tips for butchering chickens:
Preparation and Tools: Ensure you have sharp knives, a clean workspace, and the necessary equipment like a cutting board, poultry shears, and gloves. A sharp knife makes cleaner cuts and reduces the risk of accidents.
Scalding and Plucking: To make plucking easier, scald the chicken in hot water (around 145-150°F) for about 30 seconds. This loosens the feathers and makes them easier to remove.
Anatomy Awareness: Familiarize yourself with the chicken's anatomy before you start. Knowing where the joints and bones are will help you make precise cuts and avoid waste.
Safety and Hygiene: Always prioritize cleanliness by frequently sanitizing your workspace and tools. Properly store or dispose of the offal and waste to prevent contamination and ensure food safety.

Chicks need constant access to clean water and a high-quality starter feed that provides the essential nutrients for their rapid growth. It's important to check on them frequently to ensure they are comfortable, healthy, and free from drafts and predators. As the chicks grow, they will begin to develop their feathers and explore their surroundings more actively. Socialization is key, as it helps them become accustomed to human interaction and each other, reducing stress and aggressive behaviors later on.

Golden Laced Cochin - Bantam
Originally known as “Pekin” bantams these delightful birds arrived from china with returning soldiers around 1860. Cochins are heavily feathered down the shanks and toes and appear to be much larger than they actually are. They are very gentle, excellent setters, require little space, are absolutely beautiful to look at. Each feather is rich, golden-bay laced with lustrous greenish-black creating a broad oval with a golden bay center.

Here are seven essentials you need to provide your chicks for a good start:Brooder: A safe, enclosed space where chicks can stay warm and secure. This can be a large box, plastic tub, or a specially designed brooder.Heat Source: Chicks need to be kept warm, especially in the first few weeks. A heat lamp or brooder plate should provide consistent warmth, maintaining a temperature of around 95°F (35°C) in the first week, gradually reducing by 5°F each week.Bedding: Use absorbent and safe materials such as pine shavings, straw, or paper towels to line the brooder. Avoid slippery surfaces like newspaper, as they can cause leg problems.Feeder and Waterer: Provide a chick feeder and waterer to ensure they have easy access to food and clean water. These should be designed to prevent spillage and contamination.Starter Feed: Feed your chicks a balanced chick starter feed that is high in protein (18-20%) and formulated specifically for their nutritional needs.Clean Water: Ensure they always have access to fresh, clean water. Check the waterer regularly to keep it filled and free from debris.Space and Enrichment: Provide enough space for the chicks to move around and avoid overcrowding. Adding some perches or small objects can help keep them stimulated and encourage natural behaviors.
