Welcoming chicks into your backyard requires careful preparation to ensure their health and well-being. Start by setting up a brooder, which can be a simple box or a more elaborate enclosure, equipped with a heat lamp to maintain a consistent temperature around 95°F for the first week. Line the brooder with absorbent bedding, such as pine shavings, and ensure it's kept clean to prevent disease. Provide a shallow water dish and a feeder stocked with high-quality chick starter feed, which is specially formulated to meet their nutritional needs. It's crucial to monitor the chicks daily, checking for signs of illness or distress, and ensuring they have constant access to clean water and food. Preparing for chicks also involves planning their transition to a larger coop and outdoor run once they are fully feathered and can regulate their body temperature.

"Had a great experience with this business. I’ve got 90 birds in two different batches and haven’t lost one. Only issue so far has been one chick with what appeared to be aspergillosis, but we managed to save her with a lot of care. Each time I’ve ordered I have been contacted to see if I wanted an earlier shipment and their customer care has been great. 8 weeks in and smooth sailing."

Why are nesting boxes important?
Consistency: Chickens prefer to lay eggs in a secure and comfortable place. Nesting boxes provide a designated area, making it easier to collect eggs
Cleanliness: By encouraging hens to lay eggs in a specific spot, it reduces the chances of eggs being laid on the ground where they might get dirty or damaged.
Safety: Nesting boxes are designed to protect eggs from being trampled by other chickens.
Stress Reduction: Hens seek a quiet, private space to lay their eggs. Nesting boxes provide a comfortable and secure environment, reducing stress and encouraging regular laying.
