Our Mission is to provide shelter and care for stray or homeless pets in Weyburn, until they can be reunited with their owners or adopted to a new home. OUR VISION
Through the promotion of responsible pet ownership, we will exist primarily to shelter and re-hom

e pets that end up in our care due to unfortunate or uncontrollable circumstances only. To inspire lifelong commitment where animals are treated with empathy, kindness, and respect; free from pain, distress, disease, hunger and thirst. OUR HISTORY
MANY years ago the city had a "dog catcher" that would round up animals running at large and house them in a shed in deplorable conditions. They had only a few days chance to be sought out by their owners before they were destroyed. Volunteers began caring for the animals in this shed daily, providing food and bedding, hauling water in to clean and care for the animals. The Weyburn Humane Society was established in 1991 working out of this building, slowly improving as was possible. Finally in 1994 a parcel of land on 16th street was allocated by the city and volunteers built a garage package. It was new, it was clean and it was a huge improvement! The new shelter was built and furnished all by donations of labor and money. Additions have been added over the years to that garage package to bring us to what we have today. The Humane Society took over animal control officer duties and is under contract with the city replacing the antiquated "dog catcher". FUNDING
Our only security is our monthly payment from the city for doing animal control.$3000.00 does not reach far enough when it comes to caring for the animals. This is why we work so hard to fund raise and implore the public to give generously. While working to maintain the old shelter, we are trying to save money for a new building. This is a daunting task but we are tenacious and have faith we will succeed.

🚨 Help Us Fight the Parvo Outbreak — Supplies Needed 🚨

As many of you know, we are currently dealing with a confirmed case of Parvo in the shelter. Our team is working around the clock to keep all animals safe, but we need a few essential supplies to help us stay ahead of this virus.

What we urgently need:
🧴 Bleach — lots and lots!
🧻 Paper towels — we go through these fast!
🧤 Disposable gloves (size Medium)
🗑️ Large black garbage bags
💰 Monetary donations — to help cover increased vet bills & medical supplies
📧 E-transfer: [email protected]

(Include your name, address & phone number if you’d like a tax receipt for donations over $25.)

And one more thing we need…
❤️ Your support — from a distance.
We know how much our community cares, but right now the most helpful thing is not coming to the shelter unless absolutely necessary. With everything happening behind the scenes, it’s critical we keep traffic low so staff can focus on care, cleaning, and containing the outbreak.

Thank you for always stepping up for the animals when it matters most. Your support truly makes a difference, and we can’t express how grateful we are for this community. 🐾💛

🐾 PARVO FACTS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW 🐾

Parvovirus is a highly contagious and potentially fatal virus that primarily affects dogs — especially puppies. Here are some quick, important facts to help keep your pets safe:

🔸 Parvo spreads easily through infected p**p, contaminated surfaces, and even on shoes, clothes, or hands.
🔸 Puppies and unvaccinated dogs are at the highest risk.
🔸 Symptoms can include:
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea (often severe)
• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite
• Fever
If you see these signs in your dog, contact a vet immediately.

🔸 The virus can survive in the environment for up to a year, making thorough cleaning and disinfection crucial.
🔸 Vaccination is the BEST protection — keep your dog’s vaccine schedule up to date, especially the puppy series.
🔸 Parvo is not contagious to cats or humans.

Please help us protect the dogs in our community by staying informed and ensuring your pets are fully vaccinated. 🐶💛

🚨 IMPORTANT SHELTER UPDATE — PARVO DETECTED 🚨
Unfortunately, we have confirmed Parvovirus in our building. For the safety of all animals, our dog room is now CLOSED and we are not allowing any dog visitors until we are fully cleared and disinfected.

👉 The shelter is still open for cat visits,
BUT if you have an unvaccinated puppy at home, we strongly advise not entering the shelter at this time.

Our team is working hard to contain and eliminate the virus. This situation will also significantly increase our veterinary costs this month. If you were considering donating over the holiday season, we would deeply appreciate any support during this unexpected challenge.

💛 Ways to donate:
• E-transfer: [email protected]

— please include your name, address, and phone number if you’d like a tax receipt for donations over $25
• Cash or cheque: Drop off at the shelter during open hours
Your generosity helps us care for the sick animals already in our building — and protect the healthy ones, too.

Thank you for your understanding, your kindness, and your continued support as we work through this. We’ll keep you updated. 🐾💛

🐾 Meet Squak!
Squak is an 8-month-old male who showed up just outside of town — we think he may have accidentally hitched a ride in someone’s vehicle, but thankfully he was found safe and brought to us.

He’s a striking, very dark black cat with the cutest little face and a warm, friendly personality. Squak loves attention, enjoys being around people, and is ready to find a home where he can settle in and feel secure.

Let us know if you’d like to meet Squak!

Adopted!
🐾 Meet Socks!
Socks is an approximately 8-month-old male who arrived in a very memorable way — someone found him on a driveway and safely brought him to us in a gym bag, which inspired his adorable name!

He has striking colouring that makes him look like he’s wearing little socks, and he’s just as handsome as he is cuddly. Socks loves attention, enjoys being held, and is ready to find a home where he can soak up all the love he deserves.

Let us know if you’d like to meet Socks!

Update 11/29: Sprout was diagnosed with Parvo and unfortunately passed away this afternoon. We take comfort that he was warm and knew love and comfort ❤️

Play hard on the other side of that bridge Sprout🌈🐾

***

🐾 Meet Sprout — one of our tiniest fighters. 💛

This little guy hasn’t had the easiest few days. Sprout suddenly developed an illness — likely (hopefully just) a gastrointestinal bug — and he’s been refusing food and water, vomiting, and losing weight quickly. Growing puppies don’t have much reserve, so when they stop eating… it shows fast.

What many people don’t see is this side of shelter life.
It’s not just healthy animals bouncing around waiting for homes — it’s sick ones who need round-the-clock care, patience, and a whole lot of love.

Today Sprout received IV fluids to help stabilize him.

Our team feeds him by hand, keeps him warm with snuggles, monitors his fever, and checks on him constantly. We’re incredibly fortunate to have skilled staff (like our shelter manager) who can safely administer IVs when vet care isn’t available — and right now, with no vets in Weyburn or surrounding communities for a few days, that care truly means everything.

If Sprout takes a turn, we’ll have to drive him to the emergency vet in Regina — which comes with emergency fees, gas, staff wages, and long waits. We’re absolutely willing to do that for him, but it’s a reminder of what shelters face every time an animal gets sick.

But today brought a small, wonderful glimmer of hope.

Shortly after his fluids, Sprout found the strength to stand and wobble around a bit. He still isn’t ready for food… but that tiny spark of energy means the world.

Please keep Sprout in your thoughts as he continues to fight.

He’s a tough little seedling, and we’re doing everything we can to help him grow. 💚🌱seatelrt
