🐱 Upper Respiratory Infection (URI) in Cats

As we talk about donations and supplies, it's a great time to share why strong cleaning routines and vet protocols are so important in a shelter environment.

URI is one of the most common illnesses in animal shelters, similar to a cold in humans. Stress from moving into a new environment lowers a cat’s immunity, making them more vulnerable. It spreads easily through sneezes, shared bowls, bedding, or close cat-to-cat contact.

Most cases are mild and treatable, but they can spread quickly if not managed carefully.

Symptoms may include:
• Sneezing or nasal discharge
• Runny eyes
• Mild fever
• Congestion, snoring sounds
• Reduced appetite

Prevention:
💉 Vaccination & routine vet care
🧼 Disinfecting shared spaces
😺 Reducing stress to support healing
🚪 Isolation when symptomatic

Good sanitation and supplies keep URI outbreaks small and manageable.

🐾 12 Days of Donations — Day 6: GARBAGE BAGS 🗑️🖤 (Black or White)

When you care for this many furry friends, the garbage never stops. Between disposable gloves, used tissues, food packaging, litter waste, and general cleaning, bags disappear quickly.

Heavy-duty black or white garbage bags help us:
• Dispose of waste safely
• Reduce smell & contamination spread
• Keep cleaning routines efficient
• Maintain a sanitary environment

Every bag helps us get through one more messy moment — and there are lots of those in shelter life!

In just ONE day since relaunching our Amazon Wishlist, 55 items have already been purchased — and that doesn’t even include the incredible amount of donations dropped off directly at the shelter. 🐾💛

From food and cleaning supplies to toys, blankets, and essentials — every single item makes a difference. The support we've received over the last day has filled our shelves, boosted our spirits, and reminded us just how strong and compassionate this community is.

🐾 12 Days of Donations — Day 5: LAUNDRY DETERGENT 🧺✨

With blankets, towels, bedding, and washable toys constantly rotating through the wash, laundry detergent disappears quickly here at the shelter! Sick animals, puppies, kittens, accidents — it all means extra loads every single day.

Fresh laundry = warm bedding + clean recovery spaces + happy animals.
And trust us... these animals LOVE a fresh, fluffy blanket.

🧼 Any brand is welcome — however we can only use liquid detergent! Sometimes we run out of hot water and pods/power can't dissolves properly!

🚨 TEMPORARY CLOSURE TO ANIMAL VISITORS – EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY 🚨

We have made the extremely difficult decision to close the shelter to all animal visits for the next 7 days. This pause will allow us time to focus on deep sanitization and monitoring, as 7 days is the most common incubation period for many animal illnesses. Our top priority, now and always, is protecting the animals in our care — and at this time, this is the most responsible and effective step we can take.

🐶 Our dog room has already been closed since November 29
🐱 We are now closing the cat room as well

The shelter will remain open from 1–7 PM daily for:
• Monetary or supply drop-offs
• Purchasing tickets for the Holiday Booze Raffle in person

When visiting, please note:
🔹 There will be a half-door barrier inside our entrance
🔹 We kindly ask that the public does not cross beyond the half door
🔹 If no one is at the front, please ring the doorbell and wait — our staff will need to sanitize before greeting you
🔹 High-contact areas will be sanitized frequently for everyone’s safety

These past days have been heartbreaking for our team and volunteers. We are incredibly grateful for the love, donations, and kind messages we’ve received — your support truly means the world. 💛

We will remain closed to animal visitors until end of day December 10th, at which point we will reassess animal health and update the public promptly if we will reopen December 11th.

Adoptions are still welcome during this pause — you can view our adoptable animals online and submit an application. Pick-up timing for approved adoptions will be evaluated individually to ensure safety.

Thank you for standing with us while we fight through this illness. We hope to reopen for cuddles, visitors, and normal operations as soon as it is safe.

🐾 12 Days of Donations — Day 4: DISH SOAP! 🍽🫧

With all the disinfecting going on lately, dish soap has become one of our behind-the-scenes essentials — and we go through it FAST. Every day, bowls, bottles, litter scoops, feeding tools and more need to be washed, rinsed, sanitized, and ready for the next hungry animal.

It might seem simple, but dish soap plays a huge role in keeping our shelter clean and helping us prevent the spread of illness — especially during outbreaks when cleaning never stops!

We use dish soap for:
• Washing food & water bowls multiple times a day
• Cleaning toys & enrichment items
• Pre-cleaning before sanitizing
• Washing bottles for kittens/puppies
• Tackling greasy or stubborn messes

Any brand of gentle or regular dish soap is appreciated — big bottles stretch even further!
