MANY years ago the city had a "dog catcher" that would round up animals running at large and house them in a shed in deplorable conditions.They had only a few days chance to be sought out by their owners before they were destroyed. Volunteers began caring for the animals in this shed daily, providing food and bedding, hauling water in to clean and care for the animals. The Weyburn Humane Society was established in 1991 working out of this building, slowly improving as was possible. Finally in 1994 a parcel of land on 16th street was allocated by the city and volunteers built a garage package. It was new, it was clean and it was a huge improvement! The new shelter was built and furnished all by donations of labor and money. Additions have been added over the years to that garage package to bring us to what we have today. The Humane Society took over animal control officer duties and is under contract with the city replacing the antiquated "dog catcher". FUNDING
Our only security is our monthly payment from the city for doing animal control.$3000.00 does not reach far enough when it comes to caring for the animals. This is why we work so hard to fund raise and implore the public to give generously. While working to maintain the old shelter, we are trying to save money for a new building. This is a daunting task but we are tenacious and have faith we will succeed.

Have you ever thought about joining our organization? We are currently on the hunt for more board members for our upcoming year!

If you are interested in joining our organization and sitting on our board here are some requirements, we ask of you.

1. You need to have a paid membership. Membership is valid for one year - from AGM to the next AGM. You can submit payment by E transfer to [email protected]

Please then send us an email with the following information:

-name, street address/PO box, city, province, postal code and telephone number.

Regular membership is $15.00, Family is $20.00 and allows for two members of the family living at the same address voting privileges and Senior membership 65 years or older for $10.00.

2. You must commit to attending monthly meetings which are held in the evening and last between 60 to 90 minutes depending on the agenda.

3. You must be willing to help with some fundraising events. If you are unable to help at the actual event, there is lots of behind the scenes work to do before executing an event.

If you feel you could be an asset to our team, either as a member of our board or as a much-needed volunteer, please contact us or attend the AGM (date TBA).

🐾 Friday the 13th: Let’s Break the Black Animal Myths! 🐾

On this Friday the 13th, let’s talk about a real superstition affecting our furry friends. Did you know that black cats, dogs, and other pets are often passed over in shelters? It’s something we call the “Black Pet Syndrome.”

✨ But here’s the truth: these animals are just as loving, playful, and deserving as any other! ✨

So why do they get overlooked?

1. Old Superstitions: Sadly, myths about black cats bringing bad luck persist. These baseless fears have caused many people to shy away from adopting them.

2. Photographic Challenges: Black animals are sometimes harder to photograph, and their features may not stand out as much in pictures. But in person, their personalities truly shine!

3. Stigma in Pop Culture: Negative portrayals of black animals in movies and media have also played a role in shaping biases, even if unintentionally.

But here’s what we know from experience at Weyburn Humane Society: black pets are full of love and loyalty, and they deserve forever homes just like their colorful counterparts. 🖤

Paris prohibits photographs. This charming young lady was discovered as a stray. She exudes enthusiasm and joy. Affectionate and playful, Paris is too young for spaying but has begun vaccination.

Aurora, a young kitten, joined our care alongside her mother and siblings. Interestingly, her mother was heavily expectant once more, despite the fact that Aurora and her siblings were less than 6 weeks old. We separated the kittens from their mother and started them on a nutritious diet, permitting their mother to recover her health and weight before delivering another litter of 6 kittens.

Sibling of Si, Am, who was initially plagued by infections, is flourishing under the shelter's care. Now an 8-week-old kitten, her health has improved significantly. Although started on vaccines, she is still too young for spaying.

Our team has worked tirelessly to ensure their recovery, and we are thrilled to see them thrive. Currently up-to-date on vaccinations, Si awaits the day when she can be spayed and find her forever home.

Oscar, once a wild and feral cat, has won over the hearts of our kennel attendants. He now seeks a peaceful home without children, where he can continue to gain confidence. Currently, Oscar is honing his social skills, but still tends to be reserved. He finds comfort in his cozy bed, where he spends most of his time.

Adoptable Animals January 2024

Unfortunately our shelter is BUSTING at the seams. With every animal we adopt out, three more incoming animals replace it. As the temperature drops next week, we are going to see an influx of animals brought into the shelter. We have to adopt out our longest resident animals that have oh so patiently been waiting for their FOREVER home. If you have been thinking about adopting, now is the time. We are open to the public everyday from 1-7pm. And as always, we thank each and everyone one of you who continues to support us. 🩶

Sadie

Our 25th day Adoption Advent Calendar is Sadie! Sadie originally came from a home with 150 dogs before coming to the shelter as a puppy. She was then adopted a puppy from the shelter, but then recently returned at no fault of her own. She really needs to be adopted into a home where they will keep her forever as she has been in way too many homes in her young life. She is less than a year old and has the potential to be a great family dog. The shelter is closed today, but normal hours resume on December 27th at 1pm. And a big thank you to everyone who has liked, shared, and commented on the last 25 days of videos. Every interaction and view gets these animals one step closer to getting adopted!

Kloe

Kloe is our Christmas Eve kitty being featured today! You can come down and meet her until 4PM today! We are closing a little early so our staff can enjoy the holidays with their own family and fur babies! We will resume normal hours on December 27th!

Georgia

Georgia is a very special dog for our 23rd day of Christmas. She was tied to a dumpster outside of our shelter, and the very next day she had a large litter of puppies. She is finally ready to find her own home. Please share this so she can find her new family, she deserves it. She can be met today from 1-7pm.

Laverne

Little Laverne found a forever home shortly after this video was taken! However, there are lots of other kitties still at the shelter looking for a forever home!

Mikey

Mikey is a giant cat who would love nothing more than a forever home! 🏠 Stop by the shelter from 1-7pm to meet him!

Roy

Roy is back at the shelter with us as it is important he goes to a home where he will have no contact with animals. With his high activity level, he would make someone a great running companion!

Kip

Kip is very cuddly and will make a great cat for any home!

Wilma

Wilma has been at the shelter for a year and a half. Let’s make her Christmas wish come true and find her a forever home. Stop by the shelter between 1-7pm anyday to find out more about her.
