Yeast in Dogs and Cats 🐾

While yeast is a natural part of your dog or cat's microbiome, certain conditions can cause it to overgrow, leading to yeast infections. An elimination diet can help if the yeast infection is triggered by certain foods. But if environmental factors are the cause, a diet change might not solve the problem.

Dogs with allergies often itch and scratch their way to yeast infections and the common medications used to treat skin problems, such as steroids and antibiotics, also encourage yeast growth.

The symptoms of a yeast infection can look a lot like an allergic reaction, making diagnosis tricky. Without proper treatment, yeast infections and allergies can create a cycle of discomfort for your pet. To confirm a yeast infection, your vet will need to perform a skin culture to test for both yeast and bacteria.

Yeast thrives on sugar, so stay clear of any fruits and veggies while treating the issue. Probiotics are very effective at fighting yeast overgrowth, as it keeps the good bacteria in the digestive tract balanced.

Take it Slow:

When tackling yeast, slow progress is key. Killing yeast too quickly can lead to a Herx reaction, where the dying yeast cells produce more toxins than when they were alive, causing a surge in symptoms.
