Ranunculus season has sadly come to an end. This year I only grew a limited number of these beauties as it was my first year trialing them. I said from the get-go that they were too finicky and difficult for me to field grow. I didn’t like being constantly worried about it being too hot or too wet for them. But folks, I am weak and fickle. Their beauty was too much to handle. They drew me in and got a hold of my heart. So…I’m prepping my 2024 order already. I mean, have you ever met anyone who doesn’t love ranunculus?

✨ Flower Focus Wednesday ✨

This week the focus is on yarrow. Dependability is a trait I value. Not only in people but also in the flowers I grow. Yarrow is as dependable as it gets. It is super easy to grow from seed, drought tolerant and winter hardy.

Yarrow is known as a filler flower with its broad sprays of small petals. You probably recognize common yarrow as a perennial white flower that grows wild throughout parts of Canada and the US. But yarrow grown for cut flower production comes in a vast array of beautiful colors such as pink, purple, yellow, apricot and burgundy. Being a perennial, yarrow can handle the cold harsh Canadian winters and comes back reliably each year, bigger and stronger. It’s a good idea to divide yarrow to avoid it becoming too big and bushy (I learned the hard way!).

Yarrow is a super productive flower that is always in hot demand for bouquets and floral arrangements. Did I mention the bees love it too? Yarrow is an excellent pollinator plant.

It just started to bloom on the farm and it’s so nice to finally see some color showing up in the garden! I know yarrow is called a filler flower but for me, yarrow is everything.

✨ Flower Focus Wednesday ✨

Ok, I know it’s actually Thursday, but better late than never, right?

This week the focus is on snapdragons – an intimidating name for these enchanting towering spires of blooms. The name snapdragon was derived from how the blooms react when squeezed, causing the flower to snap open like a dragon's mouth.

These super productive spikes of flowers come in a wide array of vibrant colors and add great height and dramatic effect to bouquets. One of my favorite things about them is their longevity throughout the season. Being a cold hardy flower that can withstand light frosts, it is one of the longest blooming flowers in the garden, starting in mid-June here in zone 6 and continuing all the way through to October. They can do this because snapdragons are cut and come again flowers, meaning they continue to send off new shoots and produce more stems as they are harvested. A flower farmer’s dream flower!

Though there are several varieties of snapdragons, this year we are focusing on the Potomac series for their long strong stems and reliable performance.

The snapdragons are about to bloom shortly here on the farm and I can’t wait! Team snapdragon, hands up! 🙋🏼‍♀️

✨ Welcome to the first edition of Flower Focus Wednesday! ✨ I decided to start this series to help shine light on some of the beautiful locally grown blooms that you will find on our farm.

Many of the flowers we grow are unique and perhaps lesser known to most people. They don’t appear as often in grocery store bouquets. Why is this you may wonder? Locally grown flowers are delicate and cannot be transported long distances like more traditional, familiar flowers like gerbera daisies and roses. Currently more than 80% of flowers purchased in Canada and the US are imported, mainly from Colombia, Equator and the Netherlands and are heavily sprayed with pesticides. Local flowers from our farm, on the other hand, are grown without any chemicals or pesticides. They are elegant and fresh, grown using regenerative farming practices focusing on soil health and biodiversity. Flowers like cosmos, snapdragons, sweet peas, strawflower and celosia to name a few. The flower fields are on the brink of bursting into bloom so while we wait for them, we can start learning about them!

First up this week are Cosmos 🌸

One of my favorite flowers in the cut flower garden are cosmos. Once they start blooming, they just scream happiness. These cheerful blooms grow bountifully on dainty stems and add a whimsical touch to bouquets.

Here are some fun facts about cosmos:

• Because of their delicate nature, cosmos do not ship well and will often only be found through local growers
• These are true summer flowers and are very sensitive to cold weather. They pump out the blooms July through to August but fizzle out once the temperatures get chilly
• Cosmos are cut-and-come-again flowers. That means the more you cut, the more they bloom!
• Colors range from white to soft pink to burgundy but I find the white most popular and this year am trying out a few different white varieties that look great in wedding work

Cosmos are one of the most quintessential summer garden flowers that look great all on their own or in a mixed bouquet. What do you think? Do you love cosmos as much as I do?

Tulip season is quickly coming to an end and boy was it a beautiful and fun ride! A common question I received from so many customers was “are these all actually tulips?” No one could believe how much they looked like peonies as they opened up over the week, showing their double blooms and soft colours. These aren’t your average grocery store tulips 😊. Thank you to everyone who ordered — your support means so much to me!
