On Monday, Whitby Animal Services learned of an unfortunate situation possibly involving a cat that was recently in our care. The health and well-being of the animals that come into our care is always our priority.
Once in our care, we scan any potentially lost animal to determine if it is microchipped to confirm ownership, assess its health with a veterinarian, and finally hold the animal for seven days, during which time we hope to reunite the pet with its family.
In this situation, the cat came into our care in early May, was not microchipped, and was very ill. Shortly after arrival, the cat was posted on the Townโs Lost and Found page. Once the cat was healthy again, on July 4, we put the cat up for adoption through our website to help find a loving home, and he was adopted two weeks later.
When we are contacted regarding a lost animal, whether online, in person, or on the phone, we immediately ask the owner to email Animal Services and provide us with an up-to-date photo of the animal so that we may compare it to any animals which are found by, or surrendered to, our team. The public is always welcome and reminded to come into the shelter to look for their lost animals or to be reassured that they are not in our care. Unfortunately, we have no record of being contacted regarding this cat before July 19.
We feel for all parties, and this highlights the importance of ensuring that animals are leashed, collared with a licence, and microchipped in the event your animal is lost. Whitby Animal Services continues to host low-cost microchipping clinics for our Townโs pets to ensure that they can be returned home quickly.
