HEALHTY MOUTH MONDAYS!
Does your pets teeth look like the before photo? If so it is time to give us a call at
905-571-3700 to ask us how to book a COHAT for your furbaby.
What is a COHAT and what does it include?
COHAT stands for Comprehensive Oral health Assessment and Treatment and is a very important part of your pets overall health.
A COHAT, which can only be performed under anesthesia, is important because it will address any concerns above AND below the gum line.
Every true COHAT includes:
-a review of pre- anesthetic blood work
-an assessment of your pets medical records, physical exam, history, diet etc..
-A thorough oral exam, charting any abnormalities or teeth of concerns
-dental probing and charting
-Full mouth Xrays (this shows the DVM what is going on UNDER the gum line)
-A treatment plan created for any problems found (including extractions)
-Discharge instructions including pain control, feeding instructions etc.
-Recheck exam (if needed) and/or a plan for future COHATs

HEALTHY MOUTH MONDAYS!

Have you also heard about the thumbnail test, which is why you should try our VOHC approved DENTAL CHEWS?

Chewing is an important part of your dogs oral health care routine, BUT you want to ensure the dental chew is not TOO hard that they risk a slab fracture (which is
when a flake or "slab" of the tooth fractures off). These types of fractures often result in exposure of the pulp where the only treatment is usually extraction of the
tooth.
There are a couple ways to know your dog's dental chews are safe;
1- Use the fingernail test. If the chew or toy is so hard that your fingernail bends instead of penetrating the toy; then it's too hard for your dogs teeth.
2-Look for VOHC approved dental chews. These chews have been approved and deemed safe by the Veterinary Oral Health Council.

KEEP YOUR PETS WARM AND SAFE DURING THE EXTREME COLD WEATHER!
Remember that your pets are at risk of frostbite and freezing just like you are during extremely cold weather.
-Ensure to keep your outdoor cats inside!
-Limit your dogs time outside.
-Follow the weather advisory for "skin exposure time" to the cold weather and ensure to apply this time to your pets time outside as well.
-Put a coat and boots on your pets to protect their skin while outside.
-Do NOT leave pets in the car!
-Wildlife and stray pets may seek shelter during the Polar Vortex, so ensure to TAP on the hood of your car, before turning it on!
-If you are concerned your pet my have frostbite, call your Veterinary Clinic or nearest Veterinary Emergency Clinic for advice.

Luna would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year and let everyone know that January and February is all about DENTAL HEALTH. In the next couple months we will be highlighting the importance of home oral health care, dental diets, the importance of professional dental cleanings, photos of dental xrays, before and after dental cleanings and MUCH MORE!

Since Luna is a small breed dog, and has an increased risk of dental disease, Luna would like to share some healthy habits for oral care to ensure all her have kissable smiles and breath.
-Take the smell test, to check if your dog has bad breath.
-Brush your dogs teeth daily.
